Music Video Analysis Artist: Ylvis Track Name: What does the fox say Genre of song: Pop Director: Ole Martin Hafsmo Format: Out door performance – 3 minutes 34 seconds INTENTIONS The intentions of this artist are to promote

themselves and their comedy, for their norweigen tv program I Kveld Med Ylvis

They werenʼt trying to seem serious or get a hit song which is why they changed from their original idea about men dancing badly to animal sounds, they were just trying to abuse the power of the studio thatʼs written so many hit songs.

REPRESENTATION OF THE ARTIST The artists at the start were dressed as normal adults would for a party. But when the chorus starts they suddenly appear in fox onesies. The lighting in the forest dance section is good with the large cylindrical lights in a circle, the building lighting is perfect with the natural light.

The back up dancers during the forest scenes are also dressed as foxes but with shirts and ties. During the verses the artists seem in admiration and very melon collie about foxes. When the chorus is playing they seem strangely happy

RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN MUSIC AND VISUALS

During the verses the visuals seem slower in pace with the music. But when the chorus kicks in and the music gets faster and more upbeat the visuals in the cuts and the dance also change/go faster.

RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN LYRICS AND VISUALS

The first verse as practically everyone knows lists off animals and the sounds they make “mouse goes squeak”, “and fish go bulb” as he lists off each animal with itʼs sound, someone dressed as said animal walks passed him.

As soon as the first word of the chorus is spoken “what does the fox say” the singer who did the last verse is suddenly cut into a version of themselves in a fox onesies. during the second verse they mention mores code and a horse and with each individual letter they say the video cuts to a different visual. These elements are what make the song as much fun, as silly as it is and is likely the reason for itʼs success.

VOYEURISM (NOTION OF LOOKING)

INTERTEXTUALITY

TYPICAL OF GENRE the genre of this music is electronic pop. Itʼs not a typical pop song because itʼs an intentional joke and it completely random and strange.

There is also the fact that as they arenʼt professional or well know musicians their video has a surprisingly large budget.

WHO IS THE TARGET AUDIENCE The target audience is everyone but mainly Norwegians as the song was made as a promotional aid for their talk show in Norway and they are trying to get more viewers.

WHY WOULD THIS APPEAL TO TARGET AUDIENCE

This would appeal to their target audience as its quite a funny gimmick video and song and anyone who doesnʼt find this song funny enough to crack a smile, or to at least be intrigued by the video to watch one of their episodes is in a very small minority group.

It a very strange thing to watch and after I first saw it I had to see what other silly things they might of done and after seeing more music videos and some hilarious pranks they did on their show I watch their first few episodes with subtitles so their promotion worked perfectly on me. Its even work well on others as Iʼve told some people the reason they made it when they were wondering to their friends why it was made and who they are.
