SEPTEMBER 2014 F or this issue of the Crossroads, I am highlighting three significant things in the works at Prince of Peace/Príncipe de Paz. The Restoration Project has begun: The Restoration Project, above all, gives the worshiping members of PoP/ PdeP the opportunity to join in prayer and conversations about what God is doing in and through His people. Visitation teams have undergone training and visits are beginning. We are celebrating the many ways God is at work restoring relationships, restoring this community, and restoring us in our shared ministry in Christ. We acknowledge the challenges we face and lift them all to the Lord, who has promised us so much in Christ. As you are contacted by a Restoration Visitor or invited to an upcoming “Restoration Event,” joyfully receive their invitation to join the conversation. As your pastor, more than anything, I long to see people connecting in Christ as the Lord builds community through these opportunities. The Story Comes to PoP/PdeP: The Story is an abridged, chronological Bible that reads more like a novel. We want everyone to have a personal copy of The Story. Pick yours up at church in the coming weeks. (If you know someone who might not be able to afford a copy, simply encourage them to pick one up. Donations have been received that make it possible for everyone to participate.) By the same token, personally share a copy with someone in your sphere of influence, and then personally invite them to join you at PoP/PdeP. WHAT ARE YOUR PLANS FOR FALL? “I know the plans that I have for you, declares the Lord. They are plans for peace and not disaster, plans to give you a future filled with hope.” (Jeremiah 29:11, GW) We launch The Story on September 7 and encourage all to read the first chapter by September 14. The big picture view of The Story of God’s love in Scripture will be our focus in worship each week, with themes drawn from the chapter we have been reading. Attention—Vision Work Ahead: Our “Listening Posts” in late spring engaged individuals in giving voice to their understanding of God’s dreams for us as His people. The Board of Directors has used that input as well as time of focused prayer in working toward producing a vision statement for Prince of Peace/ Príncipe de Paz. Please pray for our BoD in this and all their work on our behalf. We are excited about all God has in store for us—His “plans for peace and not disaster.” With anticipation together we look toward “a future filled with hope.” Pastor Ken Prince of Peace is “The heart, hands, and feet of Jesus— in the heart of Orlando

SEPTEMBER 2014

For this issue of the Crossroads, I am highlighting three significant things in the works at Prince of Peace/Príncipe de Paz.

The Restoration Project has begun: The Restoration Project, above all, gives the worshiping members of PoP/PdeP the opportunity to join in prayer and conversations about what God is doing in and through His people.

WHAT ARE YOUR PLANS FOR FALL?“I know the plans that I have for you, declares the Lord. They are plans for peace and

not disaster, plans to give you a future filled with hope.” (Jeremiah 29:11, GW)

We launch The Story on September 7 and encourage all to read the first chapter by September 14. The big picture view of The Story of God’s love in Scripture will be our focus in worship each week, with themes drawn from the chapter we have been reading.Attention—Vision Work Ahead: Our “Listening Posts” in late spring engaged individuals in giving voice to their understanding of God’s dreams for us as His people. The Board of Directors has used that input as well as time of focused prayer in working toward producing a vision statement for Prince of Peace/Príncipe de Paz. Please pray for our BoD in this and all their work on our behalf. We are excited about all God has in store for us—His “plans for peace and not disaster.” With anticipation together we look toward “a future filled with hope.”

LSF PROGRAMS HELP CHILDREN BE READY FOR

SCHOOLGetting the children back in school makes for a busy time at Lutheran Services Florida. LSF is the largest provider of Head

Start and Early Head Start services in Florida, serving more than 6,000 low-income families with children ages 0 to 5. These children are fed a nutritious breakfast, lunch and healthy snack as they prepare to enter kindergarten on an equal footing with children born to more fortunate economic circumstances. Many churches, groups and individuals from around the state are supporting this work by gathering needed items, volunteering their time at the centers, and lifting these families up in prayer. To learn more about LSF Head Start, go to www.lsfnet.org or call Steve Cecchetti at 407-878-8397.

USE IT OR LOSE IT

We are all familiar with the truth that if we don’t exercise our muscles, they tend to atrophy. The same principle holds true with our rights. As Americans we have more liberty and rights than most people in the world. Christians are not allowed to publically evangelize in Muslim-dominated lands, even in nations where sharia (Muslim law) is not totally enforced. Egypt is just such a country, even though 20% of its population is Christian. In other Muslim-dominated countries, like Pakistan and Iran, Christians are even more severely suppressed. In Pakistan any negative mention, or even slight, to the deceased founder of Islam, Muhammad, can result in the death penalty. Article 295C of the Pakistani constitution warrants death to anybody who insults Muhammad, and life imprisonment to anybody who defiles the Koran. Not so America! We have freedom of speech. I can recall handing out Christian tracts on the streets of Daytona Beach during Spring Break when a policeman stopped me, and asked for my permit to distribute literature. I respectfully told him that that I did not need a permit, and that this was my First Amendment right. I requested that he speak with his supervisor. He did so, and then concurred with my right to evangelize. I resumed my public evangelism. “Political correctness” and misinformation can inhibit our evangelistic efforts. Recently I attended a talk by Stephen Guschov,

a pastor and lawyer with Liberty Counsel. Mr. Guschov’s talk was on freedom of religious speech within the public school system. Students have the right to religious speech during non-instructional time – such as between classes, during recess and during lunch. They can also distribute Bibles during non-instructional time. Students and teachers have the right to wear religious jewelry if secular jewelry is allowed. Students can wear clothing with religious symbols if secular symbols are allowed. In his talk he mentioned many other rights than we have as Christians within the public school system. Liberty Counsel has won many lawsuits against school systems, which either by intent or by misinformation have tried to inhibit the free exercise of religious speech. Questions? Contact Liberty Counsel at 1-800-671-1776, which has its offices right here in Orlando. Paul and Silas were unjustly beaten and thrown into prison in Philippi. When it was ultimately determined that they were Roman citizens, and that an injustice had been done to them, the magistrates ordered the jailer to release them quietly. Paul and Silas disagreed. They said: “No! Let them [the magistrates] come themselves and escort us out” (Acts 16:37). They exercised their rights and continued to evangelize. We are the church of Martin Luther, who fearlessly proclaimed the Word of God to everybody—the rich, the poor, the Jews, the Muslims, and also to the government.

Let us affirm our heritage and exercise our liberty by proclaiming Jesus the Messiah as Savior and Lord. If we do not use the Word of God, we may lose it as Luther said:“O my beloved Germans, buy while the market is at our door; gather in the harvest while there is sunshine and fair weather; make use of God’s grace and word while it is there! For you should know that God’s word and grace is like a passing shower of rain which does not return where it has once been. And you Germans need not think that you will have it forever, for ingratitude and contempt will not make it stay. Therefore, seize it and hold it fast, whoever can; for lazy hands are bound to have a lean year.” Luther’s Works. Fortress, 1962, 45:352.Rev. Bruce Lieske Missions and Evangelism Team

THE PUMPKIN PATCH IS COMING!Prince of Peace will be doing a Pumpkin Patch in October to help support our

mission and ministries, as well as connect with the many people who pass by our neighborhood every day.

We will need many hands to help unload the pumpkins when they arrive on October 17, as well as

volunteers to staff the sale of the pumpkins each day. Please contact Jim Reynolds at [email protected] or the church office, 407-277-3945 if you are interested in helping with this project.

CHECK VS. CREDIT CARD VS. BILL PAYWow, where did our summer go? I know, it’s still hot out there but here we are approaching RALLY DAY! This always feels like the “kick-off ” to our yearly church activities right along with our children starting school, college,

football, and the World Series. We look forward to this time of year with great anticipation and renewal.Which reminds me, if you enjoy paying your offerings with your credit/debit card, please be aware that we have moved to a new system as of August 26. Please visit www.poporlando.com/giving to access the new Online Giving Portal and set up your recurring gifts. For those interested in setting up this convenient way of ensuring your gifts and offerings are received, we will have a table set up at the Rally Day celebration on Sunday, September 7 in the Family Life Center. You might even win a prize from the drawing to be held! Should you have any questions regarding the new Online Giving Portal, please contact the church office.Almost all banks today are offering a free “bill pay” option with a checking account. Many people use this feature to pay their utilities, cell phone, or other recurring bills. Did you know you can also use this to submit your gifts and offerings to Prince of Peace? Just contact your banking institution and someone will be happy to assist you. (If you use online banking, you can usually set this up through your secure login.) With this method, there are no expiration dates—you choose when to start and stop the bill pay by notifying your bank-and the feature is totally free for you and for PoP.If you have any questions regarding the various ways to manage your gifts and offerings, contact Lu Burchfield at [email protected] or (407) 277-3945.

NEW AND IMPROVED ONLINE GIVINGAs of August 26, we have migrated to a new and improved Online Giving Portal. To access the portal, visit www.poporlando.com/giving and click “Make an Online Gift.” With the new system, you now have the ability to create a user account to track your giving, edit your recurring gifts, and manage your personal profile. An account is not required to use the system, but it does add a new level of convenience and benefit. Our new Online Giving Portal can also be accessed from any mobile device by visiting our site as noted above. The portal is mobile-friendly so you can access your account right from your smartphone or tablet. For anyone who was using our previous online giving module, please create an account with the new system and set up your recurring gifts again. If you are new and/or unfamiliar with online giving, please take a moment to browse the new portal and give it a try!

I am so excited to be able to present The Story to the Crosstrainers! In fact, all the Prince of Peace Sunday School classes from age two through adults

will begin The Story curriculum on Sunday, September 14, during the Sunday School hour! Every week, each Sunday School class will present the same lesson on the appropriate level. This gives the parents the perfect opportunity to reinforce the lesson of the week. The children will have a take-home page which includes the points for the Bible study and “Table Talk” questions that can be points of discussion at the dinner table, in the car or any time the family is together. Each take-home page includes a “Living the Faith” activity the whole family can participate in. With the entire PoP family on the same topic each week, imagine the in-depth discussions that could evolve between all ages! Please plan on attending a Sunday School class this fall and get involved in The Story! As The Story unfolds for all of us, be sure to share experiences with friends and family. Don’t miss out on this wonderful intergenerational opportunity here at Prince of Peace! In His Name,

Kathy Hudson

The Prayer Shawl and Angel Ministry of Prince of Peace will have a table at Rally Day showcasing the items we continue to donate to the Arnold and Winnie Palmer Hospitals each week.

Come take a look at the wonderful items we craft which always brighten someone’s day. If you would like to learn more about what we do, when we meet or perhaps joining us, look for our table and we’ll enlighten you on these care-giving projects. If you know someone in need of a prayer shawl, please contact Lu Burchfield. MUSIC NOTES – SEPTEMBER 2014

It’s here! It’s finally here! I know you all are so excited about this! PARISH

CHOIR REHEARSAL begins Thursday, September 11 at 7pm! WOO! Well, I’m

excited… I hope you are, too! We are looking for more wonderful people to join our small group (men especially!). Choir rehearsals are every Thursday at 7pm in the Music Room—please join us!The contemporary Worship Team continues to search for electric guitar and bass players. If you know anyone who may be interested, please send them our way! We’d love to fill these two spots to really bring the group up a notch.“What’s up with the organ?” a few people have asked me. Well, a lot really. In the past month, the organ has taken some serious turns for the worse. The issues I presented to the congregation in December 2013 are no longer “here they come” issues but rather “here they are” issues. The main issue is that the organ is literally blowing holes in itself (and that’s not good). The most intensive phase of the organ restoration plan is to re-leather the entire organ all at once, keeping it all on the same maintenance schedule.Leather pieces can be found throughout the organ. Some are as small as two-inches in diameter, others are as wide as four or five feet. As time goes on, these pieces of leather deteriorate. They have an expected life span of 30 to 40 years, depending on the conditions. We’ve been lucky that most of ours have lasted as long as they have—the organ turned 40 this spring! There are numerous leaks throughout the organ—places where the leather has cracked or torn just slightly, so it no longer seals the air channels. However, there is at least one massive tear in the upper right side of the organ. This piece of leather measures about 10 inches by 18 inches and has torn on three sides. Air is escaping from this particular wind channel in massive quantities; thus all the pipes fed by this channel basically don’t function now. As time goes on, more and more of these leathers will continue to tear and fewer and fewer pipes will function properly. For more information about the organ restoration plan, visit www.poporlando.com/pipeorgan. I ask that you please keep the organ and the music it provides for worship in your prayers. In His Service,

Austin Wessel

• Senior Pastor Report Pastor Ken – Reviewed report from Listening Post meetings.

We are “the heart, hands, and feet of Jesus here in the heart of Orlando.” VBS was very successful this year. We had over 90 people volunteer to serve; over half of the volunteers are not PoP members. We had 130 children registered; 106 of them are not members at PoP. Total enrollment similar to past years but ratio of non-members was much higher than past years. Prince of Peace Background Check Policy is not uniform across all areas of ministry at PoP. The Preschool does background check all staff according to state rules. Sunday School Teachers are checked every 3 years. Pastor is exploring options and will bring to Personnel Committee and/or BoD in August.

• Operational Reports/Staff Reports Concern was discussed about drop in attendance. Need to set up a process to keep membership list up to date. Also discussed a need to establish a process for following up with new or prospective members. We also discussed the need to improve the process for the work of the Spiritual Care Ministers.

• Financials through June 2014 Preliminary reports are being finalized and will be reported when final. Envelope giving appears to be down from last year. Finance Committee will meet when final numbers are available.

• Fundraisers: Pumpkins will be delivered approximately Oct 17 or 18. There is no cost until after the sale. We keep our share and remit payment for sold pumpkins. Further details will be provided next month regarding Christmas Trees.

• M/S/C to approve Email-approved expenditures – June 18 Copier shipping – July 10 Christmas Tree purchase/Donation

Old Business• Restore Project – moving forward for fall 2014.
