What is coal?Coal is a rock that is formed from

the layering of plant and animal materials that have been compressed over millions of years.

Some types of coal undergo lots of heat and pressure.

How do we get coal?

Since coal is a sedimentary rock (and some types can be metamorphic), it is found far underground, we get it by digging it up.

This is also known as mining.

What is crude oil?

Crude oil (also known as petroleum) is a fossil fuel formed from prehistoric organisms whose remains settled at the bottoms of oceans and lakes millions of years ago.

How do we get crude oil?

First, crude oil must be located underground.

Next, Crude oil is removed from the ground by drilling deep wells and pumping it up to the surface.

How do we turn oil into energy?

Once crude oil has been pumped to the surface, it is then transported to a refinery where it is refined into a number of fuel products, including gasoline.

What is natural gas?Natural gas is a fossil fuel formed

How do we get natural gas?

Like coal and oil, natural gas is found underneath the Earth’s surface.

To bring natural gas to the surface, a hole must be drilled through the rock to release the gas under pressure.

Natural gas forms as temperatures increase.

However, gas will often rise closer to Earth’s crust and become “trapped” in sedimentary rocks directly below the surface.

How do we transport natural gas?

1. Gas is stored in wells underground.

3. Gas is compressed and sent (underground) to a gas company.

4. Finally, gas is sent (underground) to homes!

Nuclear plants use a certain kind of uranium, U-235, as fuel because its atoms are easily split apart.

In nuclear fission, atoms are split apart to form smaller atoms releasing energy.
