TRANSCRIPT
Using the acronym LGBT as our starting point, this course will examine the social, political, cultural, and academic nuances of these terms, their meanings, and deployments. We will be asking who is represented by these categories and who is left out, where do these classifications come from and why are they necessary and potentially problematic? This course will explore several major themes in the study of LGBTQ identities, examining how historians, philosophers, political activists, and legal scholars have approached social and cultural issues relating to sex, gender, and sexuality as the basis for understanding identity.
