Dear Villagers, Let me start by offering my most profound apologies to all dear daddies of the village for not highlighting ‘Fathers Day’ in the June edition of Village News and Views. Hopefully you didn’t lose out on all that special attention you all so rightfully deserve! Things can still happen if you have family in Australia or New Zealand where Father’s Day is on the 1st September. The 21st June (solstice) marked mid-winter in astronomical terms, but it is more common to use the meteorological definition of the seasons where winter in the southern hemisphere runs from 1st June to 31st August, the 1st September being the first day of Spring. Spare a thought for Finland and Sweden where spring officially begins when the average temperature rises above 0 °C !! At the end of May…….ah now so far away, the 30th to be precise, there was the usual village end of the month “Sun-Downer and Braai”. Even though the weather is indeed that much cooler (colder?) at 5 O’clock in the afternoon this time of the year, it didn’t deter 38 residents from stepping out of their cosy cottages to enjoy the warm and friendly gathering on the village green. The splendid braai fires needed for so many braai-ers were a product of the boy scout attributes of Ron Innes…. thank you Ron. The larger than usual turnout for the braai, was due, I would suggest, to celebrate Jan Innes’ birthday ‘clickety – click’ and all that.
We are in need of volunteers to add to the duty roster list of fire lighters / braai masters for the monthly village
“Sun-Downer and Braai”. Please contact me if you are able to help.
Like everyone these days, cutting costs and reducing expenses is a way of life and the Village News and Views is no exception. I encourage more villagers to consider having the news letter sent to their computer / notepads etc. rather than printed copies in their post box in the community centre, thereby reducing the printing costs. Send me your e-mail address and I will add your name to the growing list of subscribers. Cover Picture: Fig Tree Drive, Waterfall Gardens Retirement Village

THE VILLAGE LIBRARY
Lately large amounts of old magazines of any vintage have been dumped in the library, which causes great inconvenience to the librarians, who have to dispose of them. Only current issues of the last few months are kept on the desk for readership.
Please be so kind as to dispose of your
old magazines yourself. I also want to bring it to your attention that there is also a large collection of films on DVD’s in the library. With thanks, Christina Morgan

Lady Chatterley’s Lover A book review from the past
The sexual morality of this book was one of the most discussed novels of the twentieth century. Although published in 1928 in was not published in its full text until 1960 in England. Many denunciations and legal actions arose about the book’s capacity to corrupt the general public. During a British trial the prosecution asked the jury if this was the sort of book they would wish their servants to read! This unfavourable review appeared in the American magazine Field and Stream:
Although written many years ago, Lady Chatterley's Lover has just been reissued by the Grove Press, and this pictorial account of the day-by-day life of an English gamekeeper is full of considerable interest to outdoor minder readers, as it contains many passages on pheasant-raising, the apprehending of poachers, ways to control vermin, and other chores and duties of the professional gamekeeper. Unfortunately, one is obliged to wade through many pages of extraneous material in order to discover and savour those sidelights on the management of a midland shooting estate, and in this reviewer's opinion the book cannot take the place of J. R. Miller's Practical Gamekeeping. Ed. Zern (b. 1910)
Field and Stream: ‘Exit Laughing’ (article from ‘The Frank Muir Book’)
The A B C.. After being married for thirty years a wife asked her husband to describe her. He looked at her slowly, then said, "You're A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H........ I, J, K." She asks...... "What does that mean?" He said, "Adorable, Beautiful, Cute, Delightful, Elegant, Fancy, Gorgeous, Honey.” She smiled happily and said "Oh, that's so lovely.... what about I, J, K?" He said, "I'm Just Kidding!" His eye is still swollen....but it will get better.

Nonagenarian!.....No worries!! Turning 90 can be fun, exhilarating and filled with love especially when it is celebrated with family and friends. Maureen White experienced all of those emotions when daughter, son-in-law and 2 grandchildren arrived from Australia and family from Cape Town including 4 nieces came to Waterfall to celebrate a very special birthday on the 26th May 2019 for a very special person.
Among the many family outings and excursion over a 2 week period that Maureen and family embarked upon, one in particular was a visit to the Karkloof area. For many the Karkloof Canopy Tour is definitely an item on a ‘must do bucket list’ So Maureen with her ‘buddy’ pulling the strings, as it were, zipped through the air with the greatest of ease, that incredible lady on a flying trapeze, enjoying and loving every moment!
another Nonagenarian!! Quintin Fuller turned 90 on the 21st June. The celebrations had started a week or so earlier with a celebratory lunch at Mythos (Authentic Greek) restaurant Hillcrest and a grand family gathering. Rumour has it there was additional expense incurred due to broken crockery! The celebrations continued on Saturday afternoon (22/06/2019) with a birthday tea party in the village community dining room. Seated at the head table between son Brett and Basil, life long friend for seventy years, Quintin enjoyed the company and good wishes of friends from the village, who in turn enjoyed a feast of sandwiches, savouries and cakes with tea or coffee. Of course there has to be a birthday cake and the skills of Janet Innes and Dawn Smith produced a beautifully decorated and very tasty cake. Editor

On Sunday 9th June 2019 the 94th Comrades Marathon took place. This year was the “up run” starting from Durban‘s City Hall at 05:30 finishing at the Scottsville Racecourse, Pietermaritzburg a distance of 86.83km. This world renowned ultra marathon event attracts participants from all over the world, male, female, ages ranging from 20 to 80, varying levels of fitness, bearing in mind everyone has had to have run a qualifying standard marathon time in order to participate. Their aspirations ranging from a sub 6 hr. time to just participating and finishing before the 12 hour cut off time when the gun is fired. Among the more than 21000 runners who set off from Durban in this gruelling event were a number family members from our own village residents Oliver Floyd, grandson of Joy and Arthur Stembridge. Oliver lives in Australia with his family He was inspired to run the comrades by a former Comrades Marathon multiple gold medallist Gary Turner. In 2018 Oliver completed the down run in a time of 11hrs 35 min. He was determined to come back the following year for the up run and collect a ‘back to back’ medal. This year he was back on the starting line in C batch. The family acting as his seconds met up with Oliver at Hillcrest and Drummond and he looked very good at each point. Oliver finished in a great time of 10hrs 38min. and received a Bronze Medal and his back to back Medal. Jolene Thompson, daughter-in-law of Jill Thompson The Cape Town family were back in town again for the Comrades Marathon. Early morning on arrival at the starting area Jolene met up with her running club mates getting ready for the start. This was Jolene’s fourth comrades marathon and once again the long hours of dedicated training would to be put to the test. Meanwhile Sean, husband and second, headed up to Pinetown the first check point. Jolene ran her own race crossing the finish line with a huge smile on her face 111th position in the women’s race in a time of 8hrs 34min. With today’s the modern technology the family members in Dubai and New York were kept well informed of her progress throughout the race. This was a well earned achievement making everyone so very proud. Jaclyn Campbell, granddaughter of Ken Wood Jaclyn Campbell and friend Andrew Dennis came out from the UK to run in this ultra marathon for the very first time. Both found the race very tough and now know why it’s called the Ultimate Human Race! From singing Shosholoza and the national anthem at the start line the camaraderie throughout, regardless of race or position, was absolutely brilliant. Jaclyn’s time of 11hrs. 48min. and Andrew’s (Andy’s) time of 10hrs. 50 min. earned them their well deserved medals. David Baird, son of Sally Nahman David came down from Johannesburg to compete and win his 4th Comrades Marathon medal in a time of 11 hrs. 49min. It was certainly a very long day for both runners and their families getting up in the early hours of Sunday morning and finishing well after 6 in the evening. Tired and exhausted maybe, but with a successful run behind them and family members smiling saying, “well done, we are so proud of you”, it was a day to remember and celebrate.
