Weston Youth Orchestra – October Concert

Welcome to the first of our Autumn concerts. This is the first concert that the orchestra has given at the Kings of Wessex Academy, Cheddar, since 1990 and

will hopefully be the first of many more.

We hope you enjoy this evening’s varied programme from both the Senior and Junior orchestras. If you would like to be kept informed of the Orchestra’s

activities, or would like to find out more about us, please visit our website at www.westonyouthorchestra.org.uk.

We are grateful to the Rotary Club of Wrington Vale for their support in staging this concert.

Weston Youth Orchestra

BackgroundWYO was established in 1958 to provide an environment for young musicians to improve their performance skills through playing in an orchestra. Many former members have gone on to forge careers within the world of music, including conducting and performing with the world’s top orchestras, arranging and composing music as well as playing for West End shows.

We are a self-funding voluntary organisation whose income is generated solely from public performances and annual membership fees.

On average we perform four full concerts each year. Repertoire for these is primarily sourced from our own library; this includes works ranging from standard Classical repertoire through to music from Stage & Screen.

Joining WYOThere are two orchestras due to varying age, ability and experience. The Junior Orchestra (grades 1- 4) has an approximate age range of 8 - 14 years and the Senior Orchestra (grade 5+) has an age range of 12 - 21 years.

Rehearsals take place every Friday evening throughout the year at the Boulevard United Reformed Church. The Junior Orchestra rehearses 6pm - 7pm and the Senior Orchestra 7pm - 9pm.

Membership costs just £30 per year.

Programme Notes – First Half

Overture to The Barber of Seville - Gioacchino Rossini The Barber of Seville is an opera in two acts with a libretto by Cesare Sterbini. It was based on a 1775 comedy of the same name by Pierre Beaumarchais. The overture to the opera is actually comprised of music from two of Rossini’s earlier operas, ‘Aureliano in Palmira’ and ‘Elisabetta, regina d'Inghilterra’ and therefore contains none of the musical themes heard in the opera itself.

In a Camp of the Ancient Britons - Albert KetelbeyAlbert Ketèlbey, born in 1875,composed this tone picture in 1925 and dedicated to his friends in Weston-super-Mare. It is based on a dream he had when he visited the town, and depicts a battle fought in Worlebury Woods. The work begins with the Sacred Grove of the Druids, followed by: the Invocation before Battle, the March of the Ancient Britons, the Advance of the Roman Legions, the Battle and defeat of the Britons, and their Retreat. The Invocation theme then returns as a Waltz as if being played by a band on the seafront, bringing the listener back to the spirit of present day.

Concerto for Two Violins- Johann Sebastian BachBach composed his double violin concerto between 1717 and 1723 when he was the Kapellmeister at the court of Anhalt-Köthen, Germany. It was during the same period of his life that he composed the famous ‘Brandenberg Concerti’. Annabel Hancock and Jack Hanlon, a student at the Kings of Wessex Academy, are the soloists this evening.

Overture to Lustspiel - Kéler BelaThe Hungarian composer Kéler Bela lived from 1820-1882, beginning his career as a violinist and military conductor. Later, throughout the 1870s, he toured Europe with his own orchestra, performing his own compositions. The overture to ‘Lustspiel’ (meaning Comedy) is the only part of the work that is still performed today.

Programme Notes – Second Half

Clowns Dance & Rustic Dance - Charles WoodhouseBorn in 1879, Charles Woodhouse worked as a violinist in various London orchestras. He also composed a large quantity of music for young musicians, including the ‘Clowns Dance’ and ‘Rustic Dance’ that the Junior Orchestra are performing tonight.

Spanish Ladies – Trad., arr. Sidney Hollyoak‘Spanish Ladies’ was originally written as a traditional English Sea Shanty and, according to the viewpoint of the British Royal Navy, describes a voyage from Spain to the Downs. The original song is held by most to be a capstan shanty where the shanty is sung to keep time in turning the capstan to raise the anchor for the boat to leave port. Sidney Hollyoak, formerly the Director of Music for Somerset, arranged the piece for orchestra.

Theme from Wallace and Gromit - Julian NottThe Wallace and Gromit films focus on Wallace, an absent minded inventor and cheese enthusiast, and his companion Gromit; a mute, yet intelligent, dog. The theme tune was composed by the British composer Julian Nott, who has also written music for numerous television programmes, including ‘Lark Rise to Candleford’ and ‘Peppa Pig’.

Procession of the Sadar - Mikhail Ippolitov-Ivanov ‘Caucasian Sketches’ are a pair of orchestral suites, written in 1894 and 1896 respectively, and consist of four parts each. The ‘Procession of the Sardar’ is the finale to the first suite. The suites are heavily influenced by Georgian folk music that Ippolitov-Ivanov would have heard during his time spent in the Caucasus mountains. The word ‘Sardar’ is a title for a military commander formerly used in the region.

Selections from 007 - arr. CusterWith the next James Bond film due to start production later this year, we take you back to the music of some of the earlier films from the franchaise. This medley includes selections from ‘Goldfinger’, ‘For Your Eyes Only’, ‘Live and Let Die’ as well as the main 007 theme.
