Anything can happen if we recognize the magic of everyday life. Author P.L. Travers understood this special kind of magic when she published her first book, Mary Poppins, in 1934. Pamela Lyndon Travers was born in the Australian state of Queensland of Irish parents. She started writing stories as a teenager and moved to England in 1924. Her tale of the mysterious nanny who teach-es a troubled family to appreciate the important things in life went on to become one of the most recognized and beloved stories of all time.

Walt Disney’s daughters fell in love with the Mary Poppins books, and made him promise to make a film based on them. Disney first attempted to purchase the film rights to Mary Poppins from P. L. Travers as early as 1938 but was rebuffed because Travers did not believe a film version of her books would do justice to her creation. For more than 20 years, Disney periodically made efforts to con-vince her to allow him to make a Poppins film. He finally succeeded in 1961.

Walt Disney originally considered Angela Lansbury, Mary Martin, and Bette Davis for the role of Mary Poppins. Julie Andrews, making her movie acting debut after a successful stage career, got the prime role with Dick Van Dyke in the key supporting role of Bert. P.L. Travers orig-inally didn’t want Julie Andrews in Mary Poppins. According to Dick Van Dyke, “Mary Poppins in the book was a short, plump lady, and she didn’t want a beautiful woman to play the role.”

ABOUT “MARY POPPINS”The film was released in 1964 to universal acclaim, receiving a total of thirteen Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture and won five, including Best Actress for Julie Andrews and Best Original Song for “Chim Chim Cher-ee.”

Shortly before her death in 1996 at the age of 96, Pamela Travers met with theatrical producer Cameron Mackintosh and granted the rights to develop a stage play adaptation. She acquiesced on the condition that only English-born writers and no one from the film production were to be directly involved with creating the stage musical.

In 2001, Mackintosh and the head of Disney Theatrical collaborated so that the stage play would be able to use the songs from the Disney film. Julian Fellowes (writer of Downton Abbey) was brought on to write the show’s script because of his “clear understanding of the social niceties of the English class system that prevailed in the Edwardian era.” Although it was a hybrid of the movie and the original books, the stage musical version of Mary Poppins, came a good deal closer to the Travers style.

Following the success of London’s West End production, the Broadway production opened in November 2006. It received seven Tony Award nominations, including Best Musical, win-ning for Best Scenic Design. After 6 years and 2,619 performances on Broadway, it closed to make room for the stage adaptation of Disney’s Aladdin.

BOB FUNKING AND BILL STUTLER (Owners / Executive Producers) On July 9, 2014, the West-chester Broadway Theatre will celebrate its 40TH ANNIVERSARY, as well as the 24th Anniversary

in this specifically designed, state of the art theatre. Bill and Bob, 2004 inductees into the “Westchester County Business Hall of Fame,” pioneered the Dinner Theatre concept in Westchester when they opened An Evening Dinner Theatre on July 9, 1974. Having designed and built An Evening from the ground up as a theatre that serves dinner and lunch, they established their operation as a cultural mainstay in the tri-state area. The Westchester Broadway Theatre is the only year round theatre in Westchester where Broadway performers, directors and designers gather to create the best in Musical Theatre. (They have produced more shows than most Broadway producers. Mary Poppins is our 184th Mainstage Production.) The Westchester Broadway Theatre is the longest running, 52 week a year Equity theatre in the State of New York. Each show is produced exclu-sively for the theatre and each is approached in the same manner as Broadway Productions: casting Broadway performers at auditions in New York City, and hiring the creative staff (Directors, Choreographers, Musical Directors, Set, Costume and Lighting Designers). On the dark nights of the musicals, Bill and Bob have presented over 900 Monday and Tuesday night specials and, in 1997, inaugurated the Gold Star Series of Concerts presenting Jackie Mason to a sold-out house. Other great performers in the Gold Star series have been Tom Jones, George Carlin, Paul Anka, Wayne Newton, and Harry Belafonte. With the continued support of the people of the tri-state area, we pledge to continue to present the best in theatre and dining.

ACTORS’ EqUITY ASSOCIATION(AEA), founded in 1913, rep-resents more than 45,000 actors and stage managers in the United States. Equity seeks to advance, promote and foster the art of live

theatre as an essential component of our society. Equity negotiates wages and working conditions, providing a wide range of benefits, including health and pension plans. AEA is a member of the AFL-CIO, and is affiliated with FIA, an international organization of performing arts unions. The Equity emblem is our mark of excel-lence. www.actorsequity.org
