PBL Focus Week 5 & 6

Safe I will move safely around the

school.

This fortnight students at GWSS are focussing on moving

around the school safely. We are trying to stop students

running unsafely to play areas and being unsafe at playtime.

Interview

Why do we need to move

safely around the school?

Evelyn 3B – If we run we could

trip and hurt ourselves. People

could run into each other and

hurt others or themselves.

Walking would be safer.

Jessie 3A – It is important so we

don’t get hurt. We should move

around safely by walking on the

concrete at all times.

5B are learning and investigating light and shadows in Science this term. The students have been learning through hands on experiments to

investigate different opaque, translucent or transparent objects and the shadow (if any) that each object forms. We have also been learning

that when conducting investigations, one variable must be changed, one variable measured and

everything else must remain the same to make the investigation a fair test.

4A have been exploring the quest novel ‘Nim’s Island’ in English this term. We are reading this novel because we are looking at characters and how they develop. Each time we read a chapter, we fill in some questions and dictionary meanings about that chapter. Here are some photos of students, their booklets and some quotes they have about the book so far.

“My favourite part was when Fred (iguana) eats the pearl from the coconut and Selkie (sea lion) ‘whumps’ him on the back with her flipper to spit it out” – Jordan

“I like the book because there is lots of love between Selkie, Fred and Nim. It also makes me want to keep reading it as it’s suspenseful waiting for things to happen” - Sienna

“I like the book because it’s entertaining and funny and there are lots of language features to help describe what’s happening” – Raiden

“I like that in the book, Jack (Dad) stays happy even when his boat rudder is broken, just so Nim doesn’t get upset” – Ishlyn

“This book has had so many rollercoaster feelings! It is adventurous and filled with loads of description for the reader” – Jana

“I have liked this book because every page we read makes me curious” – Corbin

Last week in 4C we were looking at being resilient in the face of ‘hard Yakka’. We discussed how in every aspect of life there are going to be things that we find hard. But 4C came up with some terms they can use when they find a task difficult or hard to accomplish. These terms can be said aloud or in their head as a reminder of their capabilities. Here are some of the terms 4C came up with.

Friday 27th August

Family Fun Night is our major fundraiser each year that not only raises much needed funds for school resources, but gives our students an opportunity to have fun and socialise with their classmates. We have sent home a book of raffle tickets with each family. There are ten tickets in a book at $2 each. There is no expectation for families to sell or buy all of the tickets. If you would like extra books, please ask at the office and more will be issued to you. All raffle ticket books returned each week will be put into a draw for the book seller’s chance to win a $5 tuckshop voucher. At the end of the fundraiser, a prize will be given to the highest ticket seller in the school. As with any event, volunteers are needed to help support on the night in various areas, so please don’t hesitate to let us know if you are available to help, even if it’s just for half an hour – it all counts towards a successful event. Ride Tickets will also be available prior to the event. There are some fantastic rides again this year and classes are in the midst of organising lots of amazing and fun stalls. It’s shaping up to be a night not to be missed!! We are still collecting donations for our Cent Sale Raffle so if you know of anyone able to donate a prize, it will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks to our Major Raffle sponsors:

Gladstone Ports Corporation’s (GPC) new-look Port to Park FunD Run can help us raise important funds for our school community and we’d love as many of our students and families to participate on Sunday 15 August. This year, two new courses will wind through GPC's beautiful waterfront parklands of East Shores, Marina Parklands and Spinnaker Park. The courses have new names too, recognising the language of our Traditional Owners of the land - the Bailai and Gooreng Gooreng nations. The 9-kilometre Koongo Dash (meaning place of water) starts at 7am for our early risers, while the 3-kilometre Yallarm Family Run (meaning place of shells) will be perfect for those limbering up a little later at 8.30am.
