Ramblings From
Your Editor
My mother turned 75 last month. She is not
happy about that, so don't tell her I told a few
hundred people just now. We had a family
reunion as her birthday party. My Uncle Henry
was there and he had saved a mailing that
offered The New World Book ofHorns. Chuckling
all the while, we looked over the mailing, that
was slanted towards a white, Anglo-Saxon
audience, not a Chinese one.
First, I was greeted with a picture postcard
of a Caucasian, mostly blond, tidy, perfect
nuclear family that resembles no family I know. I
am inferring, based on familiarity, that I am to
readily identify with them. It didn't happen.
Next was the letter, in the upper right hand
corner was the Horn family crest. Imagine that!
We were so happy to see that a crest exists for
our noble Chinese village- stock.
I was mightily impressed that the letter was
addressed to "Dear Henry," not "Mr. Horn," but
the overly familiar first name only. In Catholic
school, I would have been banished from class
for such a trespass.
The letter claims that The New World Book of
Horns has Horns "that date back to 1661." It
further states that the book provides what
"might be the oldest facts about Horns in North
America...," as well as, "2 rare Horn immigration
records of Horns who arrived between the 17th
and early 20th centuries (Two records in a span of
300 years? Wow!), each having a story to tell: like
Jan, who arrived in New York in 1661 ....These
hard-to-find Horn immigrant records may help
you determine if Jan is the connection to your
old world roots."
By now, Uncle Henry and I are so excited,
we are hoping we can claim Jan as ours.
Also, there is the promise that "this
one-of-a-kind Horn book reveals reasons why
European immigrants left the Old
World...dramatically told in firsthand accounts
from letters, journals and diaries. Plus,...amaze
yourself with historic Horn facts from actual
immigration records. (Remember, the two of them?)
Discover how family names originated and what
the distinguished Horn name means. See how
family crests were developed and find a Horn
Coat of Arms, granted to an individual Horn
centuries ago, that is translated into everyday
language." What does the latter part mean?
Big claims for a general, one-size-fits-all
genealogy book. Sure, in the small print there is
the disclaimer that this is not intended for
providing proof for family trees, but who really
reads the small print. Just a reminder to those
beginning in genealogical research, if it sounds
too good to be true, it most likely is.
This book is more likely a compilation of
phone book listings from around the world. You
can get the same information for free from the
Internet.
Happy hunting, and keep your guard up.
Better yet, protect yourself with your family crest
shield. Everybody has one, haven't they?

Wl>at 3fe Mnber Hilt? The True Story of the Origins of the Kilt and Tartan Patterns
By George Robert Kimmons
National Tartan Day, commemorated
on April 7, came to mind at the
supermarket the other day. The
gentleman in front of me in the line was
in full Scottish splendor—Campbell
tartan kilt, sporran, dagger, cape, and
highland bonnet. Doubtless he dons his
fine costume each April to celebrate
Congress-ordained Tartan Day. I hadn't
the heart to tell him that Thomas
Rawlinson, an English Quaker from
Lancashire, invented the kilt in the 1730s.
Rawlinson was a Lancashire
ironmaster, who built a furnace on the
forested lands of the MacDonells of
Glengarry near Inverness in 1727. He
acquired an interest in highland costume
in the process. For generations,
highlanders had worn a long "Irish" shirt
(their historical roots were in Ireland), a
tunic, and sometimes a plaid garment.
During the seventeenth century, the Irish
shirt fell into disuse. Many highlanders
now wore a homemade close-fitting,
brown coat with a belt, which extended
to mid-leg. Scottish soldiers fighting in
civil wars donned a brown or plaid robe
which covered the whole body and was
fastened with a belt, so that the lower part
formed a kind of skirt. This breacan, or
"belted plaid", which was often folded to
form "a short petticoat that reached half
way down the thigh." This "quelt" was
worn "so very short that in a windy day,
going up a hill, or stooping, the indecency
of it is plainly discovered."
The highland dress was convenient
and cheap, ideal for the traveler skipping
"over the rocks and bogs, who lies all
night in the hills." Rawlinson modified
the breacan to make it convenient for his
workmen. The result was the philibeg, or
small kilt, created by separating the skirt
from the plaid and converting it into a
separate garment with pre-sewn plaits.
Rawlinson himself immediately donned
the kilt. So did Chief Ian MacDonell of
Glengarry himself. Obediently, his
followers did the same. The kilt soon
caught on all over the highlands.
After Bonnie Prince Charlie's rebellion
of 1745, Parliament banned the wearing
of highland costume. By 1780, Highland
dress and many other customs were
extinct. But the suppression of Highland
life left a quaint memory of primitive
romanticism in its train. By the end of the
eighteenth century, prosperous,
Anglicized Scottish peers, lawyers and
merchants had adopted the kilt as
glamorous public wear. After all, they
would never have to caper over rocks and
hillsides. By then, English statesman
William Pitt the Elder formed Highland
regiments of the British Army, which were
exempted from theban on highland dress.
They adopted the kilt as a practical,
convenient uniform. As the regiments
proliferated, so did distinctive regimental
tartans. The fashion caught on. By the end
of the eighteenth century, both civilians
and soldiers were identifying tartans with
Scottish clans.
Englishmen may have invented the
kilt, then saved it from extinction, but it
was the Scots who invented its pedigree.
By the Napoleonic Wars, officers of
Highland regiments were convinced the
kilt was of hoary antiquity. In 1804, the
War Office proposed changing Highland
uniforms from kilts to trouser-like trews.
Colonel Cameron of the 79th Regiment
expressed the opinion of many when he
opposed the degrading notion ofstopping
"the free circulation of pure wholesome
air [under the kilt] which so peculiarly
28 Ancestors West Vol. 24, No. 3, Spring 1998
fitted the Highlander for activity." So the
kilt remained and the kilted Highlanders
captured the imagination of Europe at the
Battle of Waterloo in 1815.
A fashion for kilts and tartans spread
throughout Europe in the years that
followed. In 1822, Colonel David Stewart
of the 42nd Highlanders declared that
tartans had always been woven in
"distinctive patterns of the different dans,
tribes, families, and districts." Resourceful
manufacturers of woven cloth, like
William Wilson and Son of Bannockburn,
entered into an alliance with the Highland
Society to prepare a "Key Pattern Book"
identifying tartans with specific clans. A
whole generation of spurious histories
propagated these mythical identifications.
Not that historical accuracy had anything
to do with commercial reality. ChiefCluny
Macpherson received the "Macpherson"
tartan straight from the factory. They
omitted to tell him the tartan had
previously been labeled no. 155, then
"Kidd," after a Mr. Kidd of the West
Indies, who clothed his slaves in the cloth.
The historian Lord Macaulay, himself a
Highlander, called the new fashion for
clans and tartans a "hallucination."
In time, the spurious clan tartans
devised by a number of entrepreneurs
and fantasists gave a strange and
uncritical historical imprimatur to the
invention of an English industrialist.
Today's tribal enthusiasm for clan tartans
and kilts enriches dozens of adept
manufacturers, who clothe Scots and
supposed Scots from Cape Town through
Taiwan to the Highlands. And, in the best
American fashion, we commemorate their
enterprise with National Tartan Day.

Scottish kilt, read:

Early Day Matches
Submitted by Bea McGrath
Matches were very scarce during the
1850s. Flint and steel were used almost exclu
sively. In order to have easy access to fire at
any time, a pit was dug near the house and a
fire built inside. After the fire burned down,
the coals were covered with ashes. When a fire
had to be built, one was not dependent upon
the flint as long as any coals remained in the
fire pit. It was not unusual in those days for a
person to ride to his nearest neighbor to bor
row a coal with which to start a fire. Some
times coals were placed in little brazeros or
calderas and put in the middle of the room
when it was cold. Ashes were used for mak
ing soap, along with the fat rendered from
cattle.
This was the way of life in the Santa Bar
bara area, as well as in most rural areas of the
United States.

Genealogical Research

Cyndi Howells has written a book for
the complete computer novice. Also the
creator of a popular genealogy site on the
Internet, she explains exactly what you need
and where to get it in very understandable
terms. The book is printed in large,
easy-to-read type.
This book begins with a list of what you
can and cannot expect from the Internet
(e.g., don't expect your family tree). Major
sections of the book are: how to connect to
the Internet, using e-mail, do's and don'ts of
mailing lists, and how to search the Internet.
This book, also, contains lots of nice lists
and a good glossary. For example there are
10 pages of different mailing lists that you
can subscribe to, and a brief summary of the
topics covered by each. Other examples: lists
of web addresses for vendors, libraries and
archives, genealogical organizations, re
search guides, searchable databases and
surname lists, free software to download.
You can learn to be an Internet sophisticate
by using "emoticons" (symbols for emo
tions) like:) for a smile, or 0 for a hug and
use e-mail acronyms like AFAIK (as far as I
know) and TTYL (talk to you later).
If you have not done a lot of Internet re
search you will learn a lot and feel more
comfortable trying the various functions. In
fact, everyone can learn something from this
book.

One of the most frequently overlooked
areas of genealogical research is land
records. The author of this comprehensive
book on land and property research presents
extensive and useful background material,
as well as information on basic strategies
and the "how to's" of doing the research.
Section 1 focuses on pre-U.S. possessions
-Spanish, British, French and Mexican—and
their land ownership in contrast to Section 4,
which delves into the more current system
of individual ownership and land transfer.
Sections 2 and 3 expand on the origins of
land as they have shifted from federal and
state government to private hands. The final
section discusses the acquisition and dis
persal of Native American land records. All
chapters within each section have an exten
sive list of materials for further reference.
The two appendices (A and B) include a
detailed tract book guide to federal land
states and a series of land office bounty
maps for all federal land states.
This well organized, comprehensive
genealogical tool is one of the "best" for
individuals wishing to explore land and
property records in the United States.

The Original Scots Colonists of

$22.50, plus $3.50 postage and handling. Order
from Genealogical Publishing Co., Inc., 1001 N.
Calvert St., Baltimore, MD 21202
This Supplement contains data that
improves on some of the information found
in the author's Original Scots Colonists of
Early America. 1612-1783 for the time period
1607-1707; it also contains completely new
information taken from recent research. The
original publication, published by Genea
logical Publishing Company in 1989, was
based entirely on source material located in
the United Kingdom, while this volume
contains primary and secondary material
from both U.K. and U.S. sources.
The book is in four parts: an introduc
tion, archives and publications, an alpha
betical listing of emigrant names, and the
appendices. In the three-page introduction,
the author gives some history of Scots
immigration to North America in the seven
teenth century. Following the introduction
there are six pages listing archives and
publications where source material for this
volume was found. The main part of the
book contains 183 pages of names of emi
grants from Scotland to North America
between 1607-1707; each entry is accompa
nied by the date of the event, brief informa
tional statements, and the archive or publi
cation where the information was found. In
the eleven-page appendices, the author has
included copies of two documents used to
encourage emigration from Scotland to
North America. Also, in the appendices,
there is a list of Nova Scotian baronets
granted land for the purpose of develop
ment; however, the project was abandoned
because King Charles I handed the area over
to the French.

Ships from Scotland to America.
1628-1828.
By David Dobson. 1998. Hardbound, 127 pp.
Genealogical Publishing Co., Inc., 1001 N.
Calvert St., Baltimore, MD 21202.
This book presents a compilation of the
names of vessels that carried immigrants
from Scotland to North America in the
period 1628 to 1828. Included with the
vessel name, if known, are the vessel ton
nage, the name of the master, departure
port, destination, departure and arrival
dates, and the numbers of passengers
transported.
A brief history of the emigration of Scots
to North America during this time period is
given in the Introduction. The author states
that the "... book is based on research into
contemporary newspapers, government
records, and a small number of published
sources, on both sides of the Atlantic." Each
entry is referenced with the source and date.
While the reviewer did not count the num
ber of vessels listed, he has estimated this
number at about 1600. If the researcher has
found the name of the ship on which his
ancestor sailed, this book could be of value
in obtaining data concerning the ship and its
sailing.

Santa Barbara County
One of California's 27 original counties. While the county was aaually created in 1850, the written history of the area
dates back to 1542. In that year Juan Cabrillo discovered the Santa Barbara Channel and later, according to legend, crossed to
San Miguel Island where he died and was buried. A second Spanish explorer, Sebastian Vizcaino, entered the channel on the
Feast Day of Saint Barbara in 1602, and named the area accordingly. Fr. Fermin Francisco dc Lasucn founded the Santa
Barbara mission in 1786. Santa Barbara Royal Presidio, established April 21, 1782, by Fr. junipcro Serra, was the last of four
toyal presidios in Aha California: Santa Barbara, San Diego, Monterey, and San Francisco. Santa Barbara had all three
Spanish forms of administration - Presidio representing the military, Pueblo the civil, and Mission the religious. In 1873,
Ventura County was established from the southern portion of the original Santa Barbara area.
