Most of us have wondered about what our spiritual gift(s) might be -- and what difference does it make any way? Answering this question is so important that the Apostle Paul says we should answer with sober Christian thinking - "For by the grace given me, I say to every one of you: Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought, but rather, think of yourself with sober judgment." (Romans 12:3) Paul places all of this within the context of our relationship to God, which results in our having consecrated bodies and renewed minds (Romans 12:1-2). Paul tells us that, as disciples of Christ, we are to think soberly about the spiritual gifts He has given us and how they equip us to serve the greater Body of Christ, the Church. In other words, as Paul explains in I Corinthians 12, "not all of us are eyes or ears or a foot or hand" -- which means we have different, but equally important, functions in the ministry and mission of our Lord in and through His Church into the world. It also means that none of us is better than any other member of the Church, nor is our particular spiritual gift(s) more important than someone else's. Hence, we are of equal value and interdependent to one another. The new denomination of which WIPC is a member church -- ECO: A Covenant Order of Evangelical Presbyterians -- thinks this is so important that we have exchanged the word "member(s)" for "Covenant Partner(s)".[1] This makes sense when we remember that Holy Scripture teaches us that God is a covenant-making and a covenant-keeping God.[2] In other words, He is a promise-making and a promise-keeping God. God's covenant of grace in the Bible defines us -- rather than us defining Him. Covenant partners of the congregation have differing abilities, varied spiritual gifts, and various levels of commitment. Realizing this concept, ECO Polity states: "The session shall strive to create an effective disciple-making ministry discernment process, and equip covenant partners to be missional Christians, being faithful to nurture covenant partners into spiritual maturity and significant ministry."[3] There is much food for thought here that leads us to prayer and study -- and to considering what our own spiritual gifts are and how we can use them in sharing God's grace. Yours and His,

Dr. Bob [1] ECO Polity (Book of Order) states that "A covenant partner is a person who has made a profession of faith in Christ, has been baptized, has been received into the membership of the church, has voluntarily submitted to the government of the church, and participates in its worship and work. Covenant partners are eligible to vote in congregational meetings." (ECO Polity 1.0402) [2] Here we see that ECO's Polity is built on its Reformed Theology, which is based on the Bible. [3] This is especially true for "those who are invited to take significant leadership roles in the congregation shall be spiritually mature, agree with the Essential Tenets of ECO, be carefully selected, be trained/and or mentored, and supervised, and should ordinarily be members for at least a year." (ECO Polity 1.0305 |The Congregation's Expectation of Covenant Partners)

WIPC's Fall Kickoff had a great response! The Fall Kickoff & Potluck Brunch were a great welcome to the new season ... Walking into the church on Sunday morning, September 29, 2016, felt like walking into a fall harvest. The walls were adorned with straw wreaths, scarecrows, pumpkins, and the wonderful colors of fall: reds, oranges, yellows, and browns. Tables were decorated in Fellowship Hall with burlap table runners, pumpkin candles, and delightful scarecrows holding festive blessings.

Tables were set up along the wall in the sanctuary to represent each of the new groups that Session members will oversee. People were invited to stop and gather more information -- and to sign up to help on committees. It was a great turnout -- and if you haven't had a chance to volunteer yet, contact any of the Session members for guidance on what activities and events fit your skills and time commitment. Teams include the following: * Worship Team - Geney Heaton * Ministry Team - Geney Heaton * Discipleship Team - Nancy Attaway * Evangelism Team - Tommy Weathersbee * Fellowship Team - Tom Hendrix * Strategic Planning Team - Tom Hendrix According to Session member Harold Hebert, "The Fall Kickoff at WIPC was successful as a starting event as far as introducing Strategic Planning opportunities to the members. The basic goals behind developing processes for expanded planning were both to ensure that spending decisions benefit the Church and to provide a path for members to share their ideas for changes and improvement." "The newest way for people to participate in church planning," Harold said, "is by simple use of a suggestion box -- and we are proud to say that three suggestions were received on the first day." Because participation is encouraged and welcomed, the Suggestion Box will be available permanently for people to share new ideas. "The Session and the entire team studying church growth this year feel strongly that members can contribute ideas," Harold continued, "which can be polished and developed for the good of all of us in WIPC. Keep those ideas coming!" Session member Tom Hendrix said, "We had a great response today! From my observation, everyone who attended our Worship service took the time to peruse all of the tables and ask questions. From the Fellowship point of view, we got interest from folks becoming Greeters and Birthday/Anniversary Cake-Bringers ... and a lot of interest in Surf-Fishing, too! We're looking forward to seeing the results from our next couple of Sundays. Thanks to all - and we look forward to growing our teams as we grow our church!"

CONGREGATIONAL

MEETING

> October 9th <

Session members, along with a few volunteers, decorated the church and Fellowship Hall for the Fall Kickoff. Tim Ekberg has become a pro at handling the ladder (and says he looks forward to Christmas decorating!). Tim, Tom Hendrix, and Tommy Weathersbee were excellent at setting up tables, hanging things, and helping in whatever capacity was needed. Tom, Geney Heaton, and Nancy Attaway got crafty and made the Christian magnets that were given to everyone as they entered the church. (If you didn't receive one, there are still some available.) Geney and Nancy also got creative making signs. Coleta Weathersbee and Janice Hendrix had fun decorating the tables for the potluck brunch. Sally Cannon provided decorations and helped set up displays. All worked (or rather played) to make the atmosphere festive for the event.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY

According to Session member and Evangelism Team Leader Tommy Weathersbee, "We are planning a 12-day Mission Trip and Presbyterian Pilgrimage to Ireland and Scotland next year in April or June ... and we'd love to have you join us!" We'll spend six days working with the Adelaide Road Presbyterian Church in Dublin to minister to Latvian immigrants in their neighborhood. This will involve several daily and evening activities for children and adults and will allow us to make friends with our Dublin Presbyterian partner church. Next, we'll enjoy spectacular sites along the northeast Ireland coast and visit Londonderry, North Ireland, to trace our Scotch-Irish heritage. We'll then travel to Edinburgh, Scotland, to spend three days seeking John Knox's important spiritual influence as a Scottish Reformer. And, while in Scotland, we can't help but follow the heroic William Wallace, guardian of Scotland, to better understand Scottish freedom. Estimated cost of the trip is $2,000 per person. Please begin praying about your participation in this trip. It promises to be a life-changing event that will allow you to be a lasting blessing to Ireland and a source of immense growth in your own spiritual life. Contact Tommy Weathersbee to sign up NOW to begin receiving trip information as it becomes available. Tommy Weathersbee -- (817) 475-6505 | [email protected]

PRAISES & PRAYER

REQUESTS

Please have all praises and prayer requests in

by 5 p.m. Mondays

for Tuesday's distribution.

All prayer requests are removed after 4 weeks

unless updates are received to continue.

Be sure to submit your praises each week. They

are newly listed every week --

that by the staff, elders, and others from the church you are bringing. (Your mission budget just doubled!) You will have first dibs on downtown hotel rooms, guaranteeing a shorter hop, skip, and jump between your fabulous downtown hotel and First Presbyterian Church (which, in the case of a freak January snowstorm, you may be grateful for ...) You will avoid sleepless nights on a waiting list AND wishing you had 75 free dollars ... You will have an amazing event to look forward to in the dead of winter after all the excitement of Advent and Christmas has died down and you have gone completely broke making memories with the kids/grandkids/friends/co-workers AND you are wishing more than ever that you had that 75 free dollars! As soon as you register for the national gathering, book your hotel room(s)! Our block of rooms at Aloft filled quickly and the hotel graciously allowed us 10 more rooms. When those are full, the whole hotel is full. And almost half of our rooms at the Hyatt are booked, so plan now to get your first choice. Still have questions? Email [email protected].

In memory of Maxine Alfei ... Maxine Jewell Koch Alfei was born January 25, 1924, and left this world on August 30, 2016. She was an inspiration to us all. She lived with a smile and a twinkle in her eyes. She loved her family and being with people. She loved having people as her guests for a meal at the Country Club and was ready to offer you a glass or two of wine when you came to visit her. She was a people-person and never liked being alone. Maxine was one of the founders of the Jamaica Janes (a women's service organization in Jamaica Beach), and enjoyed launching a project now and then. She enjoyed participating in

the Lions Club with her husband, Matt Alfei. She was one of those lovely people who saw the glass as half full, rather than half empty. She had a wonderful attitude on life that was life-affirming for everyone around her. Not surprisingly, she was not a complainer -- which made us all happy to see her and glad to be around her. She was a very strong person that made the best out of life. She out-lived four husbands and kept on going to the age of 92. She managed to make the most out of life and be there for everyone. She and Matt shared a good marriage that lasted

thirty or so years. Matt would have said with a smile, "She was a good wife and a loving companion." Maxine was a very kind and giving person who had a good sense of humor. She made an excellent greeter and usher at church and should have won the Best Attendance award. As a result, Maxine enjoyed life until she began losing ground in the last six months or so. Maxine was preceded in death by her husband Matt Alfei. She is survived by her daughter Jimmi Ann Breakey and son-in-law Don Breakey; son Patrick Ferry and daughter-in-law Susie Ferry; grandchildren Mike Breakey, Matt Wells, and Brian Wells; sister Tootie Trantham; nephew Del Ruggles and his wife Terry; niece Janice Ruggles; close friend Merna; and many friends. She would not want our tears, but for us to join in her celebration of life. Indeed, she would have us thinking of how wonderful life is and would rather that we wear something bright as part of the celebration. So here we are Maxine, celebrating the life you shared with us and celebrating with you, your new life eternal!

Mike & Susan Wilson share talents with WIPC ... Mike and Susan Wilson visited WIPC on September 25. Susan, who leads the island-wide Women's Bible Study at Moody Methodist Church, played the piano and both shared their vocal talents with us. It was a delight to have them here.

ECO Theology Team needs your help to review Confessions ... Rev. Mark Renn, Associate Pastor at First Presbyterian Church of Kingwood, visited WIPC on September 4th to talk about ECO's Theological Task Force. He said, "Part of our journey [in ECO] is to determine what we stand for. What do we believe at a deeper level? What do we believe within ECO? We currently utilize the Essential Tenets to define us; the Book of Order as our polity document for guidance on how to govern and covenant churches together; but we've not yet reviewed the Book of Confession." According to Session member Nancy Attaway, she and Tom Hendrix will begin leading a study group on the Book of Confessions beginning in late October, with suggestions forwarded to ECO in by March 2017. "We'll read the chapters independently, then come together to discuss them," said Nancy. "I'm excited to begin reading the book. It's a wonderful view into history." The original book dates back to the Nicene Creed (325) and is rich in historical and theological documents. The content of the Book of Confessions includes the following: * Nicene Creed * Apostles Creed * Scot's Confession * Heidelberg Confession * Second Helvetic Confession * Westminster Confession * Westminster Larger Catechism * Westminster Shorter Catechism * Theological Declaration of Barmen * Confession of 1967 * Brief Statement of Faith Nancy said, "We have six people signed up so far -- and we'd love to have more join us. Your input is much-needed and we look forward to reviewing these pieces of history and providing our suggestions back to ECO."

Meet Davis, a young man from Uganda ...

Can you help him on his journey during his visit

to Shriner's Burn Hospital in Galveston this winter?

Rev. Shelley Homeyer, one of our Summer Mission recipients, would like to introduce you to a young man named Davis. He's a very sweet 18-year-old who suffered a terrible accident two years ago when he fell face-first into a fire. He hasn't been able to receive treatment in Uganda because his mother is so poor. His mother is a lovely lady who had two sons: Davis and an older one died of a disease at age five . God works in amazing ways ... Last summer, Rev. Homeyer was in the States and met Ben and Sharon Raimer (the Shriners' neighbors). They are both doctors at UTMB. Ben helped Rev. Homeyer connect to Shriner's Hospital [in Galveston] and they are going through the process of approval. All of Davis's care and fees will be free! The only step left for his approval is to find a family (or families) who would be able to let him live with them and provide transportation to Shriner's for outpatient care towards the end of his care. It could take, at the most, six to eight months of surgeries and care. It would mean, basically, a relational adoption for eight months while he is in Galveston. His care could be more of a team effort, with more than one family involved. According to Rev. Homeyer, "Davis became part of our family very quickly and he has a huge heart of gratitude. I have been praying for the process and wanted to see if you could pray about any couples or families in your congregation who might be willing to take on Davis' care. We could talk about it and pray together." Nancy Attaway has volunteered to be the liaison at WIPC to help coordinate Davis' stay and care while on the island. If you can help in any way, please contact her at (713) 306-7110 or [email protected].

Davis fell face-first into a fire two years ago. He will be

visiting Shriner's Burn Hospital soon and would be

very grateful for your help during his healing journey.

Texas Panhandle Update ... Mary Ann Barnett recently moved west to the Texas Panhandle. She sent this message to update all on her new journey: I have made great progress on getting settled. Mostly unpacked and organized. Yahoo! Yesterday morning, there was a real traffic jam on the road going by my little house -- four cowboys on horseback were taking a shortcut through my place to round up their cattle! (Wish I had taken a picture for the next calendar!) Today started with a deer just outside the fence this morning when I got up to a temperature of 41 degrees. Later, I saw a flock of quail, then wild turkeys ... in addition to my beautiful horses out in the pasture! I definitely made the right move. Please stay in touch and I will do my best to do the same. Blessings and Joy, Mary Ann Barnett PO Box 10, Boys Ranch, TX 79010 | [email protected] | (713) 569-7589

A letter from 30,000 feet ... I am writing from high above the Atlantic Ocean on my way back to the land that I have loved so much for so many years, Latvia. This will be my longest trip in several years and I am looking forward to meeting with our fine BBI (Bridge Builders International) staff and missionaries and other wonderful people with whom we have important relationships. BBI's ministry is broad, touching matters related to leadership, mission training, vision casting, camping, farming, orphan care, ministry to the disabled, Celebrate Recovery, networking with artists and musicians, among others. I will attend the Latvian National Prayer Breakfast. It will also be my joy to spend a few days in Estonia and England, strengthening important relationships for future ministry. When I return to the United States, I will minister in various settings in Washington D.C., South Carolina, Georgia, and Colorado. I will finally be back home in Oregon on November 21.

Annual Celebration of St. Vincent's House ... St. Vincent's House, one of our Summer Mission Giving Program recipients, hosted their annual celebration on October 1, 2016. During the event, guests participated in worship service with Holy Communion and enjoyed food, live music by Manna, Jiu Jitsu demonstrations, and more. And the kids had fun with games, face painting, and a bounce house. Sue Johnson, executive director of the NIA Cultural Center and Freedom School founder, and Rev. Roland Johnson III, Chaplain for the Galveston Police Department, received Alfreda Houston Community Service Awards at the celebration. "Both 2016 honorees have dedicated their lives to serving others in the midst of their own personal challenges," said Rev. Freda Marie Brown, St. Vincent House's executive director. "Our annual celebration allows us to not only thank God for another year of service, but also to honor men and women in our community who serve (usually without much fanfare) for the betterment of us all." The Galveston ministry annually celebrates its history around the feast day of its patron saint, St. Vincent de Paul. St. Vincent was a French Roman Catholic priest of the 17th century who dedicated himself to serving the poor. Born in a peasant family and having served as a slave in his early years, Vincent was an advocate for all who were on the margins of society, including prisoners. Rev. Brown likened Vincent to recently canonized Mother Teresa, an icon for the most vulnerable and neglected of our society, in that both of their hearts were "aligned with the heart of God; the Holy One who, throughout Scriptures, demonstrates a preferential option for the poor."

Food Bank update ... Beth Shriner recently talked to folks at St. Vincent's House regarding concerns about the shortage of food in local food banks. She was assured that St. Vincent's food bank is in good shape right now. They still need to remind everyone to bring food so it stays stocked, but there's not a severe shortage at all.

To clarify some of the information that was being shared this summer, Rev. Freda Marie Brown, St. Vincent House's executive director, said that St. Vincent's does limit the number of times someone can show up each month to receive food; and the food bank monitors the amount people receive based on family size. Rev. Brown said, "St. Vincent's food bank is in good shape thanks to the generosity of churches like West Isle Presbyterian Church! Thank you all so much for helping us give HOPE to those who are hungry."

> Mary, Undoer of Knots O Virgin Mary, faithful Mother who never refuses to come to the aid of your children; Mother whose hands never cease to help, because they are moved by the loving kindness that exists in your Immaculate Heart; Cast your eyes of compassion upon me, and see the snarl of knots that exist in my life. You know all the pains and sorrows caused by these tangled knots. Mary, my Mother, I entrust to your loving hands the entire ribbon of my life. In your hands there is no knot which cannot be undone. Most holy Mother, pray for Divine Assistance to come to my aid. Take this know (mention need) into your maternal hands this day; I beg you to undo it for the glory of God, once and for all, in the name of your divine Son, Jesus Christ. Amen. Laughter is the best medicine ... (submitted by Mary Ann Barnett)

F.R.O.G. I was told a story about a lady in the hospital who was near death when an area chaplain came to visit her. This chaplain was a very young female with long, blonde hair. She listened to the lady who was ill and left her a small gift for comfort. It was a tiny ceramic frog.

Oct. 27 - Navy Day

Oct. 29 - National Frankenstein Day

Oct. 30 - National Candy Corn Day

Did you know that candy corn has been around for more than 100 years and

has never changed its look, taste, or design?

George Renninger of the Wunderle Candy

Company popularized candy corn in the 1880s

using Emmet Lee Dickinson's original recipe.

Dickinson, a poet from Washert, Pennsylvania, was Emily Dickinson's

third cousin, twice removed (at her request).

Dickinson was also trained

in botany, and was fascinated

with corn. Besides inventing candy corn, he also developed creamed

corn and everyone's favorite holiday favorite,

corn nog.

Today, thanks to Dickinson and Renninger,

candy corn is a favorite

The next day, one of the people from the lady's church came to visit. The lady told her friend about the beautiful young chaplain who had come to visit her. The friend was so impressed with the way the lady had improved and felt the need to talk to the young chaplain. In her search to find the young woman, she was repeatedly reassured that the chaplains are never very young and that there was never a woman that fit the description given. Upon returning to the lady in the hospital, a visiting nurse entered the room and noticed the ceramic frog. She commented, "I see you have a guardian angel with you," as she held the little frog. We asked why she made the comment ... and were informed by the nurse that frog stood for: > F - Fully > R - Rely > O - On > G - God!

Can you find 16 Books of the Bible in the following article? I once made a remark about the hidden books of the Bible. It was a lulu, kept people looking so hard for the facts, and for others, it was a revelation. Some were in a jam, especially since the names of the books were not capitalized, but the truth finally struck home to numbers of readers. To others, it was a real job. We want it to be a most fascinating few moments for you. Yes, there will be some really easy ones to spot. Others may require judges to help them. I will quickly admit it usually takes a minister to find one of them, and there will be loud lamentations when it is found. A little lady says she brews a cup of tea so she can concentrate better. See how well you can compete. Relax now, for there really are sixteen names of books in the Bible in this story. Good luck. One preacher found fifteen books in twenty minutes, but it took him three weeks to find the sixteenth one. The list of 16 books will be in November's newsletter ... Good luck in finding them!

Everything I need to know about life, I learned from Noah's Ark ...

American treat to enjoy during the Halloween season. The National

Confectioners Association estimates that 35 million pounds of candy corn - that's 9 billion pieces! -- are sold annually. And,

candy corn is fat-free and one kernel only has a

mere 3.57 calories. (A cup of candy corn has about

as many calories as a cup of raisins.) So, grab a handful and celebrate!

OUR CORE VALUES

* We value the

Lordship of Christ as the Head of the church and the

center of our lives.

* We value a Christ-centered church where

Biblical values are

1. Don't miss the boat. 2. We are all in the same boat. 3. Plan ahead. It wasn't raining when Noah built the ark. 4. Stay fit. When you're 600 years old, someone may ask you to do something really big. 5. Don't listen to critics; just get on with the job that needs to be done. 6. Build your future on high ground. 7. For safety's sake, travel in pairs. 8. Speed isn't always an advantage. The snails were on board with the cheetahs. 9. When you're stressed, float a while. 10. Remember, the ark was built by amateurs; the Titanic by professionals. 11. No matter the storm, when you are with God, there's always a rainbow waiting.
