With the first Super Region 2 rankings, the path to the 2018 postseason is clear for the West Georgia Wolves, as a continuation of the winning ways will lead the Wolves to the postseason, with a host spot in sight. Standing in the way this week will be a formidable opponent in the Mississippi College Choc- taws, as the Wolves take to the road in Gulf South Conference play. LAST WEEK WRAP The West Georgia offense has now scored 27 points in back-to-back weeks, but this past week was a hard-fought victory. The Wolves held off a hard-charging West Alabama squad with a 27-25 victory on Homecoming at University Stadium. Devontae Jackson led the way with 35 carries for 162 yards and a touchdown en route to the eighth victory of the year. Mississippi College won their first GSC game of the year, taking down Shorter 37-24 on the road. BREAKING DOWN THE OFFENSE Running the football has been the key for the West Georgia offense this season, as senior running back Devontae Jackson comes into the game just 44 yards short of his third 1,000-yard season in Carroll- ton. Should he reach that number, it would mark the first time in school history that a running back has rushed for 1,000 yards in three separate seasons. Junior quarterback Willie Candler has been strong as well this season, passing for 1,798 yards and running for 280. Candler and Jackson have accounted for 29 of West Georgia’s 34 offensive touchdowns this season. BREAKING DOWN THE DEFENSE Last week against West Alabama, the Wolves gave up the most single-game yards of the year, but still did not give up more than 400 yards in a game. The Tigers amassed 387 yards, including 229 through the air. The Wolves have allowed 300 yards or less in five of the eight games this season, including a season-low of 171 to North Greenville in the sixth week. The Wolves have had eight interceptions on the year, with cornerback Ashton Jackson as the only player with more than one pick on the year. Chad Price leads the way in the sack game with 3.5 sacks on the year. SPECIAL TEAMS IN 2018 The return game has been a strong point for the Wolves thus far on the year, but last week was the Omar Cervantes show against West Alabama. The freshman was 2-for-2 on the field goals, with both coming from more than 40 yards out, including a career-long 44 yarder. Cervantes has been solid on kickoffs this season and has 20 touchbacks on the year. That includes three against the Tigers, and he has at least three touchbacks in five games this season. West Georgia (Head Coach)........................................... 2017-2018

Head Coach David Dean By any measure David Dean’s first season as head football coach at the University of West Georgia was a success. Dean arrived in Carrollton in January 2017, on the eve of signing day, and led the Wolves to nine victories and a return to the NCAA Division II Playoffs. Were there up-and-downs, and some disappointments? Certainly, but from start to finish, Dean put his stamp on a veteran roster and veteran coaching staff. The result was a Wolves team back in the national picture in Division II foot-ball. Dean was no stranger to the Carrollton campus when he returned to UWG last season. He brought with him a resume that would rival any coach in the nation. As an assistant or as a head coach, David Dean and his football teams are winners. A former wide receiver at Georgia Tech, Dean got his introduction to the wars of Gulf South Conference football in 1988 when he began a four-year run on the staff at Valdosta State. In 1992 Dean moved to Carrollton for an eight-year run on the staff at West Georgia. That stint included the first winning season at the Division II level, the first NCAA D-II Playoff berth, and the program’s first two Gulf South Conference titles. Dean departed UWG following the 1999 season, joining the staff of Chris Hatcher at Valdosta Sate. He spent seven seasons as the Blazers’ offensive coordi-nator, a run that included the 2004 NCAA Division II Championship. In 2007 Dean ascended to the head coaching post at VSU. He had to assemble a coaching staff almost from the ground up as all but one fellow staff member moved on. The results were positive as Valdosta State posted a 13-1 record and won the program’s second national championship. Five years later, Dean was back in the winner’s circle again. This time the Blazers lost twice in the regular season, but they were untouchable in the playoffs, averaging 42 points a game during a postseason march to a second national title. That second national title with the Blazers put Dean in rare company. College football has been played in the state of Georgia since the 1890s, and during that time only three football coaches in this state have won multiple national titles. Erskine Russell won three FCS crowns at Georgia Southern, while Paul Johnson followed him in Statesboro with a pair of championships of his own. The other coach on that very exclusive list is David Dean. Dean’s run as head coach at Valdosta State covered nine seasons. Beyond the two national crowns, his Blazer teams posted an impressive record of 79-27, including a mark of 42-19 in games played with the nation’s best Division II conference, the Gulf South. His teams advanced to the NCAA Playoffs six times, and Dean’s postseason head coaching record is 12-4. The success of Dean’s Valdosta State program resulted in numerous individual plaudits. He captured American Football Coaches Association Division II Coach of the Year honors following both national titles. He was also named 2007 Coach of the Year by Schutt Sports, AFCA Regional Coach of the Year, and GSC Coach of the Year in 2010. Beyond his individual success, Dean’s VSU players captured the highest of honors. His VSU teams had 18 Division II All-America selections, while 10 play-ers signed National Football League contracts. Dean also coached three players who earned GSC Freshman of the Year honors, two league players of the year, and one national defensive player of the year. Clearly, David Dean has been linked to success throughout his 30-year coaching career. At UWG or at UWG’s biggest rival, the results are irrefutable: David Dean is a winner. His teams win and his program flourishes. As Dean begins his first season at UWG, he is following the most suc-cessful three-year run in the history of the Wolves’ program. Few coaches have the gravitas to continue, and even increase that level of success. Dean is a native of DeKalb County in the metro Atlanta area. He was born in Decatur, and enjoyed a stellar high school career for the Avondale Blue Devils. Dean arrived at Georgia Tech as a walk-on in 1982, but was awarded a scholarship the following season. He played wide receiver for the Jackets through the 1985 campaign. Married to the former Stacie Stott, the Deans have three daughters: Caro-line (21), Allison (19), and Natalie (13).

Game PreviewThe West Georgia Wolves, undefeated and ranked third nationally, are set for the next road trip of the season, this time heading to Clinton, Mississippi for a showdown with the Choctaws of Mississippi College. The Wolves feature a top-20 offensive attack and a top-15 defense. The offensive numbers are strong, as the Wolves average 222 yards on the ground and 235 yards through the air. Both, though, are just inside the top-30 nationally, making the Wolves one of the most balanced offensive attacks in the nation. The Wolves are tied for 11th in scoring defense and 13th in total defense this season, giving up an av-erage of 279 yards per game and 15.6 points per game. The defense is led by safety Mon-trell Pardue and linebacker Korie Rog-ers, both of whom have been named Gulf South Conference Defensive Player of the Week through the course of the 2018 season.

Game PreviewStanding in front of the Wolves in Mississippi will be a triple-option attack that is one of the top rushing offenses in the nation. Mississippi College averages 294 yards per game on the ground, good for fifth nationally. Leading the way for that offense is Detric Hawthorn, who is second in the GSC with 105.7 yards per game. The Choctaws are coming off of their first Gulf South Conference victory of the season after defeating Shorter last Saturday by a 37-24 final. For their efforts against the Hawks, two MC players earned GSC weekly honors. Derric Hawthorn, a de-fensive back and brother of the quar-terback, was namd as the conference Defensive Player of the Week after seven tackles and an interception. Another defensive back, Calvin Sims, Jr., was named as the Gulf South Conference Freshman of the Week for his play against Shorter. Sims had seven tackles in the game, including one for a loss.

This Week in the GSCThere are only four games this week in the Gulf South Conference, as the Valdosta State Blazers have a bye week instead of playing an 11th game on the year. Delta State and Shorter will open up play this week with a Thursday night battle in Cleveland, Mississippi. The two teams have had a rough season, and one team will finish the evening with their first win of the 2018 campaign. The remainder of the conference games this week will be afternoon affairs, beginning at 2 p.m. with West Florida at North Greenville. The Argos have lost two straight after being ranked as high as fifth in the nation, and with three games to play, still have a shot a making the 2018 playoffs. West Georgia heads to Mississippi for a matchup against the Mississippi College Choctaws at 4 p.m. The Wolves were the top-ranked team in the first Super Re-gion 2 poll this week, and Mississippi College triple-op-tion has given fits to the other regionally ranked teams this year. West Alabama and Florida Tech meet at 5 p.m. in Liv-ingston with the playoffs on the line. Florida Tech comes into the week ranked fourth in the region and in line for a spot in the playoffs if they keep winning. West Alabama still has a shot at the playoffs, but must win out to do so.

RANKINGS WATCHWest Georgia remained in the same spot in both national polls after a thrilling 27-25 victory over the West Alabama Tigers. It marked the second-straight victory this season over a team that has been ranked in the top-10 at some point during the sea-son. The Wolves are joined in the top-10 this week by Valdosta State as the only ranked teams from the GSC. Three teams in Super Region 2 were ranked, as Lenoir-Rhyne checked in at 24th in both polls. Also receiving votes from Super Region 2 this week were Morehouse, Florida Tech, West Florida, Bowie State, and Virginia Union. JACKSON CAREER RUSHINGWest Georgia senior running back Devontae Jackson has been chasing history throughout the season. The Marietta native made history against West Florida, passing Nick Price (2001) for the UWG career rushing record. Jackson did it in style, though, producing the biggest rushing game for a UWG player in 18 years with 33 carries for 224 yards and two touchdowns. He now has 3,675 career rushing yards, which is fifth all-time in the Gulf South Confernce. PARDUE WITH THE BLOCKED PUNTSpecial teams have come up big for the Wolves this season, as West Georgia has four touchdowns on the year from the return game. That includes two punt returns and two kickoff returns. But in the past two weeks, it has been the blocking game that has been impressive. Chad Price blocked a field goal against West Florida two weeks ago and last week, Montrell Pardue blocked the first punt for West Georgia since 2016. NON-OFFENSIVE SCORINGThrough the first six games of the year, West Geor-gia has had five touchdowns that have come from either special teams or from the defense. LaPerion Perry has been the star of that game, as he has two kickoff returns for a touchdown this season. TIME OF POSSESSIONWest Georgia has been dominating time of posses-sion in the past two weeks. Against West Florida, the Wolves held the ball for 35:31 of the 60 minutes played. Against West Alabama, the Wolves held the ball for 39:44, allowing a very potent Tiger offense

to be on the field for a miniscule 20 minutes in a 60 minute contest. RECEIVING LEADERSSeven different receivers this season have a yards per catch average of more than 13 yards per catch on the year. The most goes to tight end Taylor Turner, who is averaging more than 17 yards per reception. Four different receivers average more than 14 yards per catch, led by senior Emoni Wil-liams at 14.8. John Hurst and Shannon Smith each average 14.2 yards per reception and Malik Henry checks in with 14.1 yards per catch. Henry is the team leader in receptions (27) and yards (381), and has a team-high five touchdown catches thus far on the year. JACKSON CAREER ALL-PURPOSEThe first major record fell against Shorter three weeks ago for Devontae Jackson, as the senior running back had 151 yards rushing and 23 yards in the return game. Those numbers allowed Jackson to pass Mark Evans for the career record in all-purpose yardage. Jackson now has 5,657 career yards and the Wolves have a minimum of three regular season games left. Jackson is cur-rently leading the Gulf South Conference with 143.9 all-purpose yards per game. If he keeps that pace, Jackson could become the first 6,000-yard man in West Georgia football history. A CANDLER TYPE OF YEARJunior quarterback Willie Candler has had an exceptional year, completing 143-of-218 passes for a .656 completion percentage, which is good for 9th nationally. The Atlanta native has 1,798 yards through the air and 17 touchdown passes this season. Seventeen different receivers have a reception on the year, and nine receivers have at least one touchdown catch. Candler had a span of four-straight games earlier in the year where he had three touchdown passes. He has at least one touchdown pass in every game this year.

GSC PLAYERS OF THE WEEKWest Georgia has produced the Gulf South Confer-ence Offensive and Defensive Player of the Week twice this season. Quarterback Willie Candler and safety Montrell Pardue won the award after the Florida Tech game. This past week, Devon-tae Jackson and Korie Rogers earned the weekly conference awards after a stellar performance in the West Florida game. This past week, Omar Cer-vantes became the first UWG player with a Special Teams Player of the Week from the GSC.

In the 2016 season, the final game of the year gave West Georgia a lot of momentum on both sides of the ball heading into 2017. The Wolves had 52 carries for 336 yards and five rushing touch-downs in that contest, the eighth time in school his-tory that UWG had five or more rushing touchdowns in a single game. In the 2014 run to the NCAA Semifinals, the Wolves put up more than 3,000 yards rushing for the first time in school history, shattering both the yards and touchdowns record by more than 700 and seven, respectively. The 2015 season was more of the same, with the Wolves eating up yardage to the tune of another school record of 5.1 yards per carry. Prior to Hall’s tenure, there had been no 1,000-yard backs in the previous 10 years, and the Wolves have had a back eclipse that number in each of the past three seasons. First, it was Seth Hinsley in the 2014 campaign, followed by Devontae Jackson in 2015. Last year, Lamarcus Franks became the 11th back in school history to rush for 1,000 yards in a season, hitting for 1,009 yards as a senior.
