THE DIGITAL WORKSHOP –

OUR INNOVATIVE 3D LEARNING TOOL

Since 2006, hundreds of customers have benefitedfrom the Digital Workshop developed by SMS andpacked with modern IT solutions. The focus here is on applying virtual reality to support interdisciplinarycommunication and cooperation with our customers. The Digital Workshop applies innovative virtual engi-neering and powerful 3D visualization in a speciallyequipped projection room to create vivid digital mod-els of plants, components, or production processes in real time. Just two examples of virtual reality inTECademy courses are simulations that allow us to“walk through” plants in real time, and a virtual plantportal that simulates entire process chains includingdynamic demonstrations of production processes.

A PICTURE SAYS MORE

THAN A THOUSAND WORDS

What makes visual representation so valuable to ourcustomers is that it enables them to grasp plants andprocesses much more vividly. As a result, we guaran-tee sustained learning success because: A picturesays more than a thousand words. And our DigitalWorkshop says more than a thousand pictures. Thanks to 3D models, our customers can understandand assess modernizations and other changes toprocesses and maintenance methods on their plantseven before work starts. That means they can “walkthrough” their plants without having to stop produc-tion.

We use our Digital Workshop for courses in all threeof our TECademy Specialist fields:

TECHNOLOGY

Focusing on complete plants, production sequences, and production processes

MAINTENANCE AND REPAIRS

Focusing on components that require maintenance

PLANT TECHNOLOGY

Focusing on integration tests of the entire processsimulation.

PREMIUM TRAINING for the metallurgical and rolling mill industry

2015 PROGRAM

Our wide-ranging program for 2015 covers courses on the following subject fields:

TECHNOLOGY

Our “Technology” specialist field focuses on the interconnections in the productionprocess from steelmaking through to processed strip. You profit because your staffwill be newly qualified to identify existing potentials and to develop plans for moreefficient use of this extra scope.

OPERATION, MAINTENANCE, AND REPAIRS

Central to this area is in-depth understanding about the key parameters of all plantsand components. You can then apply this knowledge to assure uniformly high prod-uct quality. Crucial objectives here are learning how to prevent and quickly remedymalfunctions.

PLANT TECHNOLOGY

Courses in this specialist field intensify plant operators’ know-how, conveying a solid understanding of the interconnected aspects of control technology. That sup-ports the high-powered yet cost-effective continuous running of plants. This is howwe teach operators to achieve high levels of plant efficiency. You can also ask ourexperts to help implement solutions in the form of concrete measures for yourplants. Invaluable here is that our experts teach not only the basic theory, but alsoadvanced know-how for a profound understanding of the various topics.

CERTIFICATES

All participants receive a certificate after completing a course to show they have taken part.

MATERIALS TECHNOLOGY –MANUFACTURING MODERN STEELSBasic course

FOCUS ON HOT ROLLING STRIP AND PLATE

Despite lighter-weight alternatives such as aluminum and magnesium, steel remains the most commonly used construction material of our time. The unique combination properties of its chemicalcomponents along with new processing technologies enable the composition of ever more effectivegrades. Driving this demand is especially the “changeover in energy policy” that calls for not onlylightweight construction steels, but also new methods of power generation.

What you can expect from this course is in-depth know-how about the basics of materials technologyfor manufacturing innovative steels as well about the various manufacturing processes themselves.Furthermore, you learn how to compare European standards with other standards systems and whatparticularities to look out for.

FLATNESS MEASURING IN FLAT ROLLING MILLSBasic course

Flatness measuring is a highly developed measuring process in modern rolling mill technology.Yet, even under the most adverse operating conditions, the measurements must meet alldemands for minimum maintenance costs and long service life to ensure the constant availabilityof the rolling mill.

Our Basics of flatness measuring course is geared toward the requirements of rolling mill opera-tors in the steel and NF metal industry. It’s a premium training course, ideal for all customerswho want to learn about or increase their understanding of the theory and practice of flatnessmeasuring. The course comprises classroom training plus a tour of our production shop.

SAFETY STRATEGIES – SAFETY FENCELearning on the model

DIN EN ISO 12100 or DIN EN 13849-1 – these are the standards that crop up again and again in connection with safe machinery and plants. This course demonstrates the requirements entailed in a concrete, easy-to-grasp way using models. While theoretical knowledge is included here, it’s equally important that you can try out the varioussafety-relevant functions for yourself. To bring the subject to life, we show you real situations that occurduring operation, troubleshooting, or repairs. You’ll see how safety equipment monitors access to themodel and prevents hazardous situations, e.g. by immediately switching off the machine. What yougain: This course sums up the provisions of Machine Directive 2006/42/EC for machinery and plants inthe EU as well as demonstrating how to apply them – all in a compact and practically relevant way.

Target group:Project leaders, design engineers, plant operators

The learning units (1 day):

Theory

- European safety requirements for machinery andplants

- Documentation requirements

- Selection of protective measures

Practice

- Practical operation of equipment, e.g. access procedures.

- Safety precautions for servicing/maintenance

- Requirements for a complete machine group(linked plants) in practice

ENERGY EFFICIENCYin metallurgical technology

Today’s steadily rising energy costs, growing machine complexity, and higher flexibility inproduction make it vital to be able to understand, analyze, and optimize energy aspects in your company. There was a time when quality management emerged as a whole newconcept, yet meanwhile it’s a firmly established function in almost all companies. Similarly, energy efficiency has now become the ideal that must be systematically implemented inforward-looking businesses. That involves improving systems and processes in your compa-ny to boost energy efficiency.

This seminar shows how an energy management system according to DIN EN ISO 50001can help you continuously identify savings potentials. Using practical examples, the courseleaders detail how you can develop measures to exploit these potentials, including analysismethods. They also present and explain efficient technologies and energy recovery options.

Target group:Managers, service and maintenance staff, energy offi-cers, and plant operators in metallurgical plants androlling mills

The learning units (2 days):

- Energy management system according to DIN ENISO 50001

MODULE 1:

THE BASICS AND PLANT TECHNOLOGY

Already addressed in the first module is “Basics and planttechnology”, which gives you varied insights into the rollinggap. The module starts with a focus on the products hotstrip and heavy plate, looking at the various measurementsand requirements. Next, in the second section, we deal withthe dimensions and definitions crucial for getting to gripswith the processes in the roll gap: from the geometrical vari-ables to the forces at work. You find out about the structureof mill stands and the various work roll diameters. Thenthere is an easy-to-grasp explanation of how roll gap adjust-ing systems compensate for disrupting influences.

MODULE 2:

HOT STRIP PRODUCTION PROCESSES

Starting with the structure of hot strip mills and plantdesigns, you work your way through the basics for an over-all understanding of the fundamentals of hot strip process-ing. Central to this module are the typical market demandsof the quality of hot strip, plus the plant technology devel-oped to meet these requirements. We take a look at the fol-lowing quality characteristics: Strip thickness, width, profile, contour, and flatness, coil shape, mechanical properties, andstrip surface.

MODULE 3:

HEAVY PLATE PRODUCTION PROCESSES

First comes an introduction to the vast complex that makesup a heavy plate rolling mill. Then we home in on the spe-cial features of the rolling mill. There is a focus on the typi-cal market demands of the quality of heavy plate, plus theplant technology developed to meet these requirements. We take a look at the following quality characteristics: Stripthickness, profile, and flatness, width and rectangularity, sabers, mechanical properties.
