Job Summary/Job Purpose:

To act as an urgent and emergency responder in unpredictable and hazardous

environments within the pre-hospital and urgent care setting. Treating patients

that access the 999, primary and secondary care systems, who present with a

wide and varied range of conditions from serious emergency life threats and in

line with current organisational policies and best practice guidelines. Also,

engaging in patient care by accessing a variety of pathways, to offer appropriate

treatment option in line with Prudent Health Care and the patients best interests.

To provide a patient focused delivery of care, treatment and safe transport for

emergency and non-emergency patients in a clinically safe and professional

environment, utilising skills and best practise when required to do so, adhering

at all times to the policies and standards inherent within the Welsh Ambulance

Services NHS Trust (WAST).

DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:

Undertakes advanced emergency driving to calls promptly taking the quickest and safest route.

Deal with patients, relatives and the public in a calm and professional manner ensuring that the dignity of the individual is respected even in hostile or difficult circumstances.

To manage, reduce and prevent clinical risk to self and others.

To comply with all road safety regulations exercising the safe use of road traffic exemptions in emergency driving and adherence to the road traffic act (1984).

To take responsibility for the security of patients property during transportation as well as the safe handling of patients’ possessions including hand over to the appropriate agency.

Undertake emergency driving duties on all types of vehicles operated by the Trust, if appropriately qualified and licensed.

To ensure that all equipment provided is kept to the highest standard and any defects or losses are reported immediately.

To ensure that the vehicle provided is cleaned daily and check that the vehicle is roadworthy, including fuel; water and oil. Report any defects on the appropriate forms.

To maintain the workplace to a high standard of tidiness and cleanliness at all times. Also, to ensure station and vehicle security.

To communicate, report and document the patients’ history, condition and treatment to colleagues and other healthcare providers either on route to or on arrival at definitive care.

To nurture a culture that improves quality, incorporates and embeds clinical governance.

All employees are subject to the requirements of the data protection act and must maintain strict confidentiality in respect of patients and staff records. To ensure that accurate documentation and records of patient care are kept in line with information governance.

All employees have a responsibility under the trusts health and safety policy, to be aware, conform and promote the policy, ensuring all health and safety rules are adhered to and ensuring that all accidents, incidents, near misses, damages and irregularities are documented and reported to the appropriate person in accordance with trust policies.

Assess and intervenes to assist the patient in emergency situations.

Rapidly and continuously evaluates the patients changing condition, in line with patient care and optimal patient outcomes.

Provide prehospital life support to those patients who are critically ill or traumatised, always acting within the individual’s scope of practice.

To ensure that the individuals personal development review is carried out in a timely manner.

When required sharing your skills knowledge and experience, offering reflective practice to newly qualified staff.

To use professional judgement in managing patient care events ensuring appropriate closure at the point of contact.

To ensure when accompanied by less qualified or less experienced staff that they, effectively communicate and supervise any task you have asked them to carry out, taking responsibility where necessary.

To exercise and be responsible for the complete duty of care to the patient and relatives until such time as a safe transfer of duty of care.

To adhere to and understand the All Wales Delegation of Authority.

To identify, assess and report all incidents where Vulnerable Adults are concerned.

To communicate in highly emotive and or distressing situations where the need for consent, informed consent is essential.

To effectively assess and decide a person’s mental capacity.

To convey distressing, contentious and complex news and manage the consequences.

To understand and work within the individuals own scope of practice

To develop and maintain effective communication with all staff within WAST and the Local Health Board Areas.

To be competent and proficient in the use of the trust IT systems and to only use them as appropriate ie: Mobile Data Terminal, Hand Held Radio, Digi Pen, Global Rostering System, DATIX, Incident and Near Miss reporting system (this list is not exhaustive).

To treat and transport emergency and urgent cases in accordance with WAST and JRCALC guidelines.

To maintain a professional level of service to the Patient in line with the contracted performance standards and operating within the trust “Our shared Purpose, Vision and Behaviours” programme.

Handling and administering, non–prescription, prescription and when under the supervision of a registered clinician, controlled medications.

Post holder must maintain competence in line with scope of practice.

Cardiac & CVA interventions – e.g. decision making around need for Primary Percutaneous Coronary Intervention (PPCI), advanced ECG recognition, F.A.S.T. test for CVA, TIA and the diagnosis treatment and referral to specialist centres for a range of conditions when appropriate.

To deliver and participate in the clinical care of patients.

Administer a range of non-IV/IO medicines.

To take an active role in using referral through pathways when in the best interest of patient care.

Maintain own clinical development by keeping abreast of new treatments and technologies.

To undertake a proactive approach in keeping up to date with organisational communications, bulletins and newsletters.

To improve the quality of the patient’s experience by identifying and meeting the individual clinical needs of patients.

Learning and Development: All staff must undertake induction/orientation programmes at Corporate and Departmental level and must ensure that any statutory/mandatory training requirements are current and up to date. Health & Safety: All employees of the organisation have a statutory duty of care for their own personal safety and that of others who may be affected by their acts or omissions. Records Management: As an employee of this organisation, the post holder is legally responsible for all records that they gather, create or use as part of their work within the organisation (including patient health, staff health or injury, financial, personal and administrative), whether paper based or on computer.
