Foreword

Everyone has the right to come to work without fear of injury and to go home safely at the end of each shift. This handbook explains our WISHES commitments and priorities through to 2019 and what your role is towards helping us achieve them. As a team we need to be the best that we can be through keeping ourselves and our colleagues safe and well and leaving a positive impact on the environment we work in.

Wellbeing initiatives have had a significant impact on the culture we see throughout our business today. We are wholly committed to removing the stigma around mental health and for it to be understood and discussed in the same way as physical injuries.

Improvement and inclusion is crucial. Having a diverse and inclusive workforce enables us through the strength of our differences to challenge unsafe acts, generate new ideas and deliver improved performance. I personally empower you with the authority to stop if you feel unsafe or believe that there is a risk to you or your team.

Safety is integral to our business; it is “our licence to operate”. We understand the environment and the challenges our staff face while working on the high-speed network and we will never stop trying to make it a safer place.

Health is one of our enablers. This means that we develop and maintain health and safety guidance, management systems and support, that our plans are directly aligned to Highways England Health and Safety Five Year Plan. We commit to improving competency and skills and raising awareness of health and safety matters.

Environment acknowledges our responsibility to create a future through improving our understanding of environmental sustainability and how we apply it in our workplace and broader community.

Strategy is our plan of action designed to achieve long-term overall aim

Remember it is your responsibility to both yourself and other road users to stay well and keep everyone safe.

Outline

The WISHES is our key objectives enabling us to deliver our ambition (see page 5). It incorporates the aims and objectives of Highways England, our parent companies and our own values and behaviours.

The WISHES goes beyond the traditional health and safety role of preventing harm. It commits us to continuous improvement regarding the wellbeing, inclusion, safety and health of our employees and stakeholders and addresses the environmental impacts resulting from the service we provide

Our commitmentsTo keep all those working for and on behalf of A-one+ safe and free from harm and for everyone to return home from work safely and in good health.

We have specific targets and tasks to achieve each year within a rolling two-year strategy (see page 6).

Our WISHES are based on integrated plans for wellbeing, health and safety and environment of which we are all responsible for achieving the actions contained within.

Our four enablers provide us with opportunities to act, for examplen Good behaviour – provide and act on feedback and celebrate

successes (see page 8 for our key behaviours)n Good health – commit to products, training and policy to improve

working environments such as managing stress or sleep and hydration awareness

n Good ideas – fostering a creative culture, empowered to task and finish, encouraging problem solving to solution, such as: hard hat working group

n Good systems – using data and having the right resources to improve what we do and get it right first time

Leadership and Culture

We will implement the learnings from last year’s safety and people survey and then re-survey to improve furtherWe will continue our commitment to the roll out of cultural behavioural training internally and externally into our supply chain, together with leadership training for all senior managersWe will improve the understanding, acceptance and management of mental health so that everyone feels valuedWe will raise awareness of environmental sustainability with an increase in our environmental engagement score

Measuring Performance

We will measure our performance to see where we are, how effective we are, and how we compare to othersWe will show whether our management is effective and whether our systems and equipment are reliableWe will use technology and analyse data to enable us to be the best and develop new improvementsWe will reduce environmental impact by effectively measuring and managing materials, energy use, transportation and waste

Engaging Stakeholders

A-one+ Key BehavioursThis handy reference summarises the key behaviours which underpin our A-one+ values. These behaviours need to be regularly and consistently demonstrated by everyone in order to safeguard our culture and deliver our customers’ requirements. The behaviours apply equally across all work areas and to all our interactions both internally and externally.
