Welcome!The Bristol Festival of Music Speech & Drama (formerly known as The Bristol Eisteddfod) was founded in 1903. It is an annual festival featuring a wide range of musical instrument, vocal and speech & drama classes, some competitive and some non-competitive.

It is open to all ages from as young as four through to adults, from all walks of life and educational background.

The classes are judged by professional adjudicators who will provide verbal and written assessments to help the entrants further develop their talents.

The festival is held in various Bristol ven-ues during the 3-4 weeks prior to the end of the Spring Term.

1 Age of performers in the Vocal Sections is as at 1st March 2020 Adults are those who are 19 before 1st March 2020. Performers must strictly observe the conditions regarding age.

2 Where a performer has requested the services of the official accompanist, a copy of own choice music must be sent to:Jane Walton 36 Copley Gardens, Lockleaze, Bristol BS79YE.

Copies must arrive no later than 1st March 2020.See also General Festival Rules 11 - 14. If there are any difficulties please contact the vocal secretary.

3 Titles of own choice songs must be submitted with entries but changes can be made up to and including 1st March 2020. Performers will not be allowed to sing any other song than that notified.

4 A second copy of own choice music must be available for the adjudicator on the day of the festival. Compliance is the performer’s own responsibility and neither the Secretary nor the Committee are able to help in this matter.

5 When the directive “any standard edition” is given, this must be treated in the same way as own choice music. A copy must be supplied for the adjudicator. A copy must also be supplied for the official accompanist if the official accom-panist is used by the performer.

6 Unless otherwise stated in individual classes performers in all classes must sing from mem-ory.

7 Time limits as stated must be strictly adhered to. With regards to Da Capo arias, the whole aria, including the repeat, must fall within the time limit. See Rule 6 of the General Rules.

8 No substitutions can be made, nor change of pairings in ensemble classes, after the closing date for entries.

9 Where classes specify a test piece, the per-former must use the edition or copy supplied. Performers may however sing the set piece in any key.

10 Unless otherwise stated in individual classes, a performer may not sing any song more than once in the Festival.

11 A performer may only make one entry in each solo class.

12 A performer may enter more than once in the duet, ensemble or recital classes with a different partner.

13 Fees for vocal classes include the services of the Official Accompanist. A performer may use their own accompanist but there can be no refund of any fees.

14 A performer can choose to enter classes on a non-competitive basis. The fee remains the same and the Official Accompanist will still be available. Please state at the beginning of the performance if you wish to perform non-com-petitively. You will only receive adjudication for a non-competitive entry.

ADJUDICATORS: Professor David HoultMusB (Hons), MPhil, GRSM, ARMCM, FRCM, FRNCM, FLCM, HonFBC

David Hoult was Principal of Leeds College of Music from 1993 until his retirement in 2008. Before that he was Head of Music at Univer-sity College Salford, and Director of Music at Cheadle Hulme School. He was the founder and first Chairman of Yorkshire Young Musicians, a government-funded Centre of Advanced Train-ing for exceptionally talented young musicians.

David has been an adjudicator member of the British and International Federation of Festivals for over forty years. He has appeared at many festivals throughout the UK and further afield, including the National Festival of Music for Youth, the Granada Television National School Choirs Competition, and at festivals and com-petitions in Hong Kong, Sri Lanka, and Trinidad and Tobago. His performing background is as a professional singer, horn player and conductor. He holds degrees in music from the universities of Manchester and Lancaster, and he studied singing with John Cameron at the Royal North-ern College of Music.

As a horn player in the 1970s, he performed with many British orchestras, including the Halle and BBC Philharmonic. For many years he was a member of the BBC Northern Singers, giving countless concerts and broadcasts throughout the UK and Europe, and also in Australia and the Far East. He has performed at most of the major British festivals, including the Proms, Edinburgh, Aldeburgh and Cheltenham. As a soloist he has sung much of the standard concert and oratorio repertoire, as well as a number of operatic baritone roles, including Figaro in Mozart’s The Marriage of Figaro and Leporello in Don Giovan-ni. He has also been a regular broadcaster on BBC Radios 3 and 4.

ADJUDICATOR: John Reynolds GRSM ARCM LRAM FISM

John is a Clarinettist, Composer, and Pianist, who also plays the Saxophone and Organ. He studied at the Royal College of Music where he won many prizes for Clarinet, Theory of Music, and Chamber Music. He enjoyed a very active freelance playing career including Principal Clar-inet in Kent Opera under Sir Roger Norrington.

He always enjoyed teaching and worked at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama before moving up to Manchester to tutor at the RNCM, later becoming Director of Woodwind, and Chethams School of Music. John’s most recent post was Head of Woodwind at RWCMD in Cardiff.

As an examiner and moderator for ABRSM for over 36 years John travelled to over thirty coun-tries, and gave many Masterclasses abroad. He has conducted numerous Wind Orchestras, and performed over a dozen first performances in this capacity. He lives in the Vale of Glamorgan with his wife and two teenage children.....................................................................................................................................

Angela is one of the UK’s most in-demand harpists, working regularly with all the major orchestras including the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden (ROH), The London Philharmonic Orchestra (LPO), the London Symphony Orches-tra (LSO) and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra (RPO).

Highlights of Angela’s varied career include play-ing for Leonard Bernstein and Claudio Abbado with the LSO, for Kurt Masur with the LPO, and working with Andre Previn and Henry Mancini at the RPO.

She has also performed Wagner’s Ring Cycle several times under the baton of Sir Bernard Haitink and Sir Antonio Pappano at the ROH. Angela’s teaching career spans almost 40 years both privately and in schools; both children and adults alike.

She has tutoured on numerous harp courses and given masterclasses around the country and is passionate about teaching the next generation.

The Founder, William Ernest Fowler, was born in Bristol (St. Paul’s) in 1872. At the age of 14 he became the organist at The Pro Ca-thedral and, after ten years, moved to All Saints’ City, where he was organist for over 50 years. William later retired to Portishead where he died aged 82.

He founded the Bristol Eisteddfod in 1903 and it continued under his direction without a break even during two wars. In 1932 it was suggested that W. E. Fowler be given the Freedom of the City for his services to the arts and to Bristol. In 1934 he was the Honorary Representative in Bristol of the Royal Academy of Music and the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music; also Honorary local Secretary of the Incorporated Society of Musicians (ISM)

The Eisteddfod (Gathering) is a festival involving artistic competitions and Bristol is recorded as having an Eisteddfod in 1871/2 organised by the Bristol Welsh Literary and Musical Society. Fowler felt there should be an Eisteddfod in Bristol which was open to all-comers without distinction of nationality.

His first Eisteddfod, held in 1903 at the Victoria Rooms, had over 300 competitors from London, Bath, Cardiff, Bournemouth and Newport. The competitions included Piano, Violin, Choral, Organ, Vocal, Reading at sight for Vocalists and Military Band.

By 1914, the entries had reached over 2,000 and Railway vouchers were issued to choir winners to encourage entries. Folk Dancing, Morris Dancing, Morris Jig, Country and Sword Dancing was introduced with Cecil Sharpe (English Folk Dance & Song Society) as the Adjudicator. There was also a set vocal piece written especially for the Eisteddfod by Dr Alfred J Silver - ‘Snowdrops’.

The Victoria Rooms was taken over by the military in 1915 so the Eisteddfod moved across the road to the Royal West of England Fine Arts Academy. The Eisteddfod continued during WW1

but there were no concerts. By 1928 there were over 6000 performers which included 50 choirs and 900 Folk Dancers. The Royal West of England Academy, Bristol Music Club, Central Hall in Old Market, the Museum Lecture Theatre and Bristol Grammar School were also used from the 1920’s as numbers increased with competitors coming from all over England, Wales and even Scotland.

For many years two concerts were held in the Victoria Rooms at the end of the Eisteddfod and were very popular. These were often attended by The Lord Mayor and Sheriff. Madeline Bess Fowler, wife of the founder died in 1932. The fol-lowing year the Bess Fowler Trophy was donated by the founder in memory of his wife who had done so much behind the scenes as secretary. It is engraved ‘Ars Longa Vita Brevis’ (Art is Long, Life is Short). It was awarded to the competitor reaching the highest standard of efficiency in the festival.

In 1935 the Victoria Rooms was badly damaged by fire so the Eisteddfod moved to the Colston Hall and other venues for two years, returning in 1937. Later the Bristol City Council took on the re-sponsibility for running the Eisteddfod, but in the late 1990’s they ceased funding and around this time the dance section left the main umbrella of the Bristol Eisteddfod.

The Bristol Eisteddfod is now self-funding. The name was changed to The Bristol Festival of Mu-sic, Speech and Drama but it is still often referred to as The Bristol Eisteddfod.

Rebecca trained as a journalist at Cardiff Uni-versity - during which time she wrote a weekly column for The Guardian newspaper, before moving to study with The Actors Company. Appointed Head of Speech and Drama at Dean Close School (Cheltenham) in 2003, her pupils have been offered training places at all the ma-jor UK acting schools. Rebecca has worked for the BBC, Channel 4, RSC and Working Title.

She is Founder of Close Up Theatre - which has won the elite Sell-Out Status for nine years at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and is also Artistic Director for No Prophet Theatre as well as an adjudicator for the British and International Federation of Festivals.

Rebecca Thompson. BA(Hons),LLAM(Hons)

On graduating from Bristol University with a degree in Drama and English, Rebecca worked for BBC Radio Four’s Drama Department. After further journalism and corporate work, Rebecca studied for her Licentiate Teacher’s Diploma and has been teaching Speech and Drama privately and in schools for 20 years. Addition-ally a voice and presentation skills coach in the region, she teaches in private and state schools, colleges and businesses, and is a facilitator for Speaking and Listening Courses in the South Gloucestershire region. Rebecca has been actively involved in theatre in the South West and is an Adjudicator for the Rose Bowl Awards for Amateur Drama and Music as well as being a Federation Adjudicator.

Rebecca loves being involved with young people in a performance context and is thrilled to be adjudicating at the Festival.

ADJUDICATORS: Graham Fitch

Graham Fitch maintains an international reputa-tion as a pianist, teacher, adjudicator and writer. Graham is a regular writer for Pianist Magazine, and has several video demonstrations on the magazine’s YouTube channel.

Has also written teaching notes for Trinity College London’s series, Raise the Bar, and for the advanced grades for the new syllabus, and been on the selection committee for the ABRSM new syllabus (advanced grades).

He has published an ebook based on his popu-lar blog, www.practisingthepiano.com, and has recently launched an online resource for pia-nists and piano teachers, the Online Academy.

Graham runs a very busy private practice in London, and counts among his long-term students Daniel Grimwood, James Baillieu, and Gemma Webster - with many others active in the profession.

In addition to teaching talented youngsters, tertiary level piano students and working with piano teachers, Graham is very interested in helping amateur pianists develop their playing. Graham is a principal tutor on The Piano Teachers’ Course UK, and is also a tutor at the Summer School for Pianists, and gives weekend courses at Jackdaws and Finchcocks.

Graham also gives regular workshops and classes across the UK for pianists and piano teachers, and annual summer courses in France and Switzerland.

Mark Tanner PhD Hon.BC MA FTCL F

Mark Tanner is a concert pianist, composer, adjudicator, teacher and writer. His performing and academic work takes him regularly to all five continents. Solo appearances include many recitals at London’s Wigmore Hall, South Bank Centre and St John’s Smith Square, as well as St George’s Bristol, where he performed in piano duo with Alan Schiller at the Mozart 250th Anniversary Celebrations.

Mark has published 65 volumes of composi-tions, editions and arrangements for Spartan Press; his music is also published by ABRSM Publishing and Trinity College London Publish-ing.

Mark’s book, The Mindful Pianist, was published in 2016 by Faber; it was hailed as invigorating and thought provoking’ by Martino Tirimo and shortlisted for Best Print Resource at the 2017 Rhinegold Music Education Awards.

In 2019 Faber will be publishing Mark’s compre-hensive guide for the self-taught adult pianist, The Piano in Black and White, and is co-author of the two latest books in Karen Marshall’s Piano Trainer series, ‘The Advanced Pianist’.

Mark’s PhD tackled the Hungarian composer, Franz Liszt; he subsequently gained an honorary degree from the Royal Birmingham Conserva-toire. He is a member of Mensa, a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts and has given master-classes across the UK, Europe and Asia. For 16 years he was Assistant Director of Music at Taunton School, Somerset.

Mark recently judged the keyboard semifinal of the BBC Young Musician and the EPTA Piano Competition; he was also Composer in Residence at Chetham’s International Piano Summer School.

For ABRSM, Mark has undertaken 45 tours to all five continents, examining grades and diplomas; he is also a Moderator, Trainer, Reader, Coordi-nator and International Presenter.

Piano SectionPiano Section Rules

1. AGE OF COMPETITORS IS AS OF 9th MARCH 2020. ADULTS ARE THOSE WHO ARE 18 BEFORE 9th MARCH 2020.

2. In all classes a copy must be provided for the adjudicator before performing. This must be neatly presented and of good quality. Players may use a copy or purchased copy for performance, but a purchased copy MUST be available at the time of playing.

3. Only one piece to be performed unless playing in Repertoire class or where other-wise indicated.

4. Time limits must be strictly adhered to.5. The title and composer of items to be per-

formed should be submitted at the time of entry. Please include opus numbers where relevant. Changes can be made up to and including 1st February 2020. Sub-stitution of pieces after the programme is printed may result in performer not being placed.

6. Substitution for duet or ensemble partners may only be allowed at the discretion of the secretary. In the case of illness, only the originally entered competitor will be adjudicated.

7. Own Choice classes are designed to include players of different standards. It is important to understand that each performance is judged primarily on the quality of playing regardless of grade of piece. Children playing at a very much higher standard than their age group may consider entering classes above their age group. This may be necessary in order to remain within the time limit of the class.

8. Entrants may not enter more than one class of the same type in different age groups. For example an entrant may play in either Repertoire class 13 years and un-der or Repertoire class 15 years and under, but NOT BOTH.

9. In the event of a class having a large number of entrants, the committee may decide to split the class into two sections. Competitors will be allocated a section at random. Two different cups may then be awarded.

Gerdi Troskie completed her BMus and MMus degrees at the University of Port Elizabeth, South Africa and continued with post-graduate organ studies at the Amsterdam Conservato-rium with Jacques van Oortmerssen. She was awarded the Conservatorium’s Soloists’ Diplo-ma (organ) in 1996.

In 1996 Gerdi moved to the UK. She taught organ and musicianship at the Royal College of Music Junior Department from 1998-2005. Gerdi was Organist and Director of Music at St Anselm and St Cecilia Roman Catholic Church, Holborn, London from 1996-2002 and joined the Organ School team of professional teachers in 2000. Gerdi has taught on many courses, includ-ing the RCO Summer Course, and has directed courses for young organists at Oundle.

She has played recitals in the UK, The Neth-erlands, Sweden, Finland and South Africa. She has written articles for Organists Review magazine and adjudicated organ classes at Arts Festivals.

Festival RulesFor closing date of entries see syllabus. Early entries would be greatly appreciated to assist with compiling the timetable. Late entries cannot normally be accepted. Proof of posting cannot be accepted as proof of delivery.

1. Entries can be made online or on the official entry form and sent to the Section Secretary concerned to arrive no later than the date stated in the syllabus. (Online entry fees should be sent within 7 days

2. No entry fees can be returned, and the Section Committee reserve the right to refuse an entry.

3. Unless otherwise stated in the various section rules, age of competitors is as at 1st September prior to the Festival for all sections. Adults are those who are 18 years before 1st September. Candidates must strictly observe the conditions regarding age.

4. Tickets and Timetables will be sent to competitors at least one week before the relevant class. If these are not received as indicated, the section secretary should be contacted.

5. All adult classes are open to profession-als and amateurs. (see also adult vocal section).

6. Time limits set must be strictly adhered to. Failure to comply may lead to reduction in marks or disqualification on the decision of the adjudicator. Time limits include any introduction of pieces and accompanist introductions and endings. (This does not apply to Speech and Drama Section). The competitor should stop performing if over the time limit which may be indicated by the adjudicator.

7. A competitor may make only ONE entry in any class; however, a competitor may enter a Vocal Duet, Piano Duet/Ensem-ble, Recorder Duet/Ensemble and Drama Duologue more than once with a different partner. Competitors may enter a Recorder Solo Class more than once if offering an alternative instrument and music.

8. Competitors may only enter once in each group of Graded classes for any section and should not have passed any grade higher than the one entered. e.g A com-petitor may enter one graded class in both

the Violin and Viola classes but not two different graded classes for violin.

9. No substitutions can be made in duet or group classes after the closing date of en-try. Names of all performers for duets and groups must be listed on the entry form. However substitutions may be allowed at the discretion of the Section Secretary.

10. Trophies remain the property of the Bristol Eisteddfod Association and are to be held by winners for one year only. The Committee will require the safe custody of its trophies, which must be returned in a good, clean condition not later than 10th February the following year. Should a tie occur, the winning competitors should hold the Trophy for an equal period during the year.

11. Official Accompanists will be provided for vocal and instrumental classes. The cost is included in entry fees. Competitors may use their own accompanist but there can be no refund of any fees.

12. Copies of all music for the official accom-panist MUST be sent to the relevant Sec-tion Secretary by the date stated on the entry form, clearly marked with compet-itor’s name & class number. These should be neatly presented and legible, unfolded and bound. Stapled or poor quality copies may be refused. All copies will be retained and destroyed unless a legally paid for downloaded copy. Please do not send books or albums of music; only individual pieces should be sent.

13. Accompanists reserve the right to decline playing for a competitor if the music is not received by the date stated on the entry form.

14. A copy of the music may be presented to the adjudicator only if a purchased copy of the piece is available at the time of performing.

15. Items to be performed must be listed clearly on the entry form. Competitors will not be allowed to perform any piece other than that stated. Substitution of pieces (changes) can only be considered if the programmes have not been printed.

16. Competitors are expected to perform all vocal and speech and drama classes from memory unless stated otherwise.

The British and International Federation of Festivals for Music, Dance and Speech work for amateur festivals everywhere to help create thousands of educational performance opportu-nities for children and young people each year. The Federation, and our member Festivals, are committed to ensuring safe environments for children and young people and believe that it is always unacceptable for a child or young person to experience abuse of any kind. We recognise our responsibility to safeguard the welfare of all children and young people, by a commitment to recommend best practice which protects them.

This policy applies to our Board of Trustees, paid staff, Adjudicator members, volunteers, students or anyone working on behalf of the Federation and our member Festivals.

We recognise that:

• the welfare of the child/young person is paramount

• all children, regardless of age, disability, gender, racial heritage, religious belief, sexual orientation or identity, have the right to equal protection from all types of harm or abuse

• working in partnership with children, young people, their parents, carers and other agencies is essential in promoting young people’s welfare.

The purpose of the policy:

• to provide protection for the children and young people who participate in our festivals, including the children of festival members

• to provide staff and volunteers with guidance on procedures they should adopt in the event that they suspect a child or young person may be experiencing, or be at risk of, harm

17. Test pieces may not be performed in any other class than that for which they are set. Neither can vocal music be transposed into any other key than that written unless otherwise stated.

18. No competitor may perform any piece more than once during the festival.

19. In all Sections the adjudicators may hear the whole or part of any performance and may withhold any award if in their opinion a high enough standard is not reached. No Trophy will be awarded unless the ‘Commended’ standard is reached with the mark of 84%. The descriptors of marks are in the Syllabus and on the remarks sheets.

20. Communication with adjudicators is abso-lutely prohibited. Adjudicators may disqualify a competitor if this rule is broken.

21. No recording or photography is permitted except with permission of the Management Committee.

22. No person will be allowed on the platform during a performance unless as accompanist or page turner.

23. The committee shall be the sole interpreters of these rules and reserve the right to qualify or determine any of the general regulations as circumstances require. Any decision on any question arising there-from shall be final.

24. Any protests must be lodged in writing with the General Secretary, together with the grounds on which it is based and with a fee of Entry Fee: £ 20.00. The Management Committee will inform the appellant of its decision within one month. If the result is not acceptable to the appellant an appeal may be made to the International Federation of Festivals whose decision will be final. Name and address of the Federation is available from the General Secretary.

25. Infringement of the rules renders a competi-tor liable to disqualification.

26. Competitors are expected to dress respect-ably and be neat in appearance

27. We reserve the right to refuse an entry to the Festival without giving a reason.

Safeguarding PolicyWe recognise that:

• the welfare of a vulnerable adult at risk is paramount

• all vulnerable adults at risk, regardless of age, disability, gender, racial heritage, reli-gious belief, sexual orientation or identity, have the right to equal protection from all types of harm or abuse

• working in partnership with vulnerable adults at risk, their relatives, carers and other agencies is essential in promoting their welfare

The purpose of the policy:

• to provide protection for vulnerable adults at risk who participate in our festivals,

• to provide staff and volunteers with guid-ance on procedures they should adopt in the event that they suspect a vulnerable adult may be experiencing, or be at risk of, harm

• to actively promote the empowerment and well-being of vulnerable adults who participate in our festivals

We will seek to safeguard vulnerable adults at risk by:

• valuing them, listening to and respecting them

• adopting safe working practices for staff and volunteers

• recruiting staff and volunteers safely, ensuring all necessary checks are made

• sharing information appropriately about adults who are at risk, with their consent

• if consent is refused and there are consid-ered to be serious concerns of abuse for the individual concerned or others, then consent may be over ridden in line with guidance, and only shared appropriately with those who need to know

• providing effective management for staff and volunteers through supervision, sup-port and training

and ensure that their children/pupils/vulnerable adults are aware of the identity and name of the person responsible for their care.

This includes supervision throughout all Festival venues, practice and changing areas that may be provided. The Festival cannot take responsi-bility for any property left unattended.

7. No unauthorised photography, audio or video recording of children and young people is al-lowed in the performance areas at our Festivals. Where parents/guardians/carers do not wish photos to be taken at all, then the responsible adult attending should ensure that their child/pupil/vulnerable adult is not included in official photos.

8. Some children and vulnerable adults may have specific needs in order to take part. If this is the case we ask the responsible teachers/par-ents/guardians/carers to contact the Festival Organiser at the time of entry. The Festival actively seeks wherever possible to meet these needs, but must know beforehand in order to prepare support – or to advise that help cannot be provided on this occasion.

9. The Festival’s Child Protection Policy, Vulnerable Adults at Risk Protection Policy and approach to Creating Safer Festivals for Everyone is published explicitly in our Syllabus, Programme and Website.

By completing and signing the entry form all parents/guardians/carers and teachers of com-petitors under 18 (or vulnerable adults of any age) confirm that they give (or have obtained) the necessary consents for the competitors to take part in the Festival.

Without consent the participant’s entry to the Festival cannot be accepted.

Creating Safer Festivals for Everyone

The Federation and its member Festivals use the following policies and procedures to create Safer Festivals for everyone:

1. A single, definitive Child Protection Policy and a Vulnerable Adults at Risk Protection Policy adopted by all Federation Festivals.

2. One or more designated Festival Safeguard-ing Officers (FSO) appointed for each Federa-tion Festival.

3. Best practice advice in the form of Safe Working Practice and Festival Child Protection leaflets, with support and training for all Festival staff and volunteers. Including clear reporting procedures for anyone with a concern about a child or a vulnerable adult.

4. Appropriate recruitment and induction pro-cedures for all new Festival staff and volunteers responsible for providing safe environments for everyone attending / performing at a Federa-tion Festival.

5. All Festival personnel wear an official co-loured Festival badge. All teachers/parents/guardians /carers are asked to report all inci-dents of any nature to anyone wearing a badge.

All reported incidents will be handled in ac-cordance with the Safe Working Practice and Festival Child Protection best practice advice. In addition we will ensure the availability of a quiet area / room where concerns can be expressed in private.

6. For the duration of a Festival all teachers/parents/guardians/carers are responsible for the continuous care and supervision of their own children/pupils/vulnerable adults. If they are unable to attend personally, they must del-egate their responsibilities to an identified adult
