WELCOME FROMLOUIS PASSFIELD,HEAD OF SCHOOLWelcome to the School of Sport and ExerciseSciences at the University of Kent. I hope thatthis will be the beginning of an exciting newchapter in your life. I am confident that you willfind your time with us stimulating, challengingand rewarding.
The School of Sport and Exercise Sciences is running a series ofevents during induction week. These events have been arranged togive you the opportunity to meet staff and fellow students. You willalso have the chance to become familiar with the campus, find outabout the university – including its many clubs, societies and extra-curricular opportunities, ask questions and sort out any issuesbefore the full teaching timetable starts from Monday 28 September.
The School’s specific events begin after the Medway Master’sintroduction and student BBQ with a welcome at 14.30 on Monday21 September in the Pilkington Building. Here I will introduce staff inthe School of Sport and Exercise Sciences to you. You will alsohave the opportunity to meet your Course Director and fellowstudents for the first time.
Please attend this event and all the timetabled sessions as they areimportant. Arrangements for the rest of induction week will beexplained in more detail at the welcome. We very much look forwardto meeting you on Monday.

Professor Louis PassfieldHead of School and LecturerT: 01634 888813E: [email protected]: M2-31Initially working as a Sports Scientistat the West Sussex Institute ofHigher Education, Louis wasappointed as Principal Lecturer atthe University of Glamorgan in2000. Having also worked for BritishCycling in the build up to the 2008Beijing Olympics, he joined Kent in2007 as Head of School.

Afterworking there as a Researcher, hejoined Kent in November 2010 as theDirector of Research.
Dr Sakis PappousProgramme Director and SeniorLecturerT: 01634 888892E: [email protected]: M1-26After completing his PhD from theUniversity of Granada, Sakis workedon the Organizing Committee for the2004 Athens Olympic and ParalympicGames. He joined Kent in August2010 having previously worked as aLecturer at the Montpellier University.His research interests include sportfor sustainable development and thesocial and psychological aspects ofphysical activity and health.

Afterteaching Biomechanics, SportsTherapy and Rehabilitation at theNanda Institute, he worked assenior physiotherapist in charge ofSports and Neuro-Musculoskeletalrehabilitation for two years in ApolloHospital, New Delhi. He previouslyworked as a researchphysiotherapist in the NewcastleNHS trust and was appointed ashonorary research associate in theInstitute of Cellular Medicine atNewcastle University before joiningthe University of Kent in May 2014.

Q: When will I find out which groupI am in for Welcome Week?A: Your Welcome Week groups willbe announced at the SchoolWelcome on Monday afternoon.
Q: When will I find out my personaltutor?A: Your personal tutor allocation willbe announced at the Schoolwelcome on Monday afternoon. Youwill also be able to check on theStudent Data System after your ITtraining session.
Q: When do I find out about mymodules?A: All of the Stage 1 undergraduatemodules will have introductionsessions on Thursday and Friday. Itis vital you attend these sessions.
Q: When will I find out mytimetable?A: Your timetable will be available toview on the Student Data Systemafter your IT training sessions.
Q: When and where can I obtaincouncil tax exemption certificates?A: All council tax exemptioncertificates are available fromStudent Administration at theGillingham Building. They will beavailable after week 3 of term andyou must ensure your term timeaddress is updated on the system.
Q: Can I bring my car ontocampus?A: There are restrictions on who canpark on campus. You can get adviceon the car parking regulations fromthe Central Administration team inthe Medway Building. Any studentslooking to park on campus will needto enter the parking ballot,information about which is includedin your initial welcome pack.
Q: When does term start properly?The official start date is Monday 29September, this will be when Stage2 and 3 students return to campus.
Q: Where can I go to discuss myStudent Loan or tuition fees?A: The University’s Finance team isbased in the Medway Building. Theirreception is located on the righthand side when entering thebuilding. Alternatively call them on01634 888913.
Q: What do I need to do to ensureI receive my Maintenance Loan andGrant payments?A: All first year students need tohave their University PaymentAdvice letter scanned by theFinance team or StudentAdministration in order to receivetheir financial support. Once theletter has been scanned, it willtrigger the payment system.
Q: I want to access the internet,where can I find a PC?A: There are PC’s available in theDrill Hall Library and in the openaccess PC room in the MedwayBuilding (M2-03). For accessingPC’s in the library, please ask at thereception desk.
Q: How do I pay my tuition fees? A: If you have taken out a Tuition FeeLoan this will be paid directly to theUniversity once you have registered.You do not need to do anythingfurther. If you have not opted for theTuition Fee Loan, you should payonline at: www.kent.ac.uk/finance-student/payment or contactUniversity of Kent, Medway Finance.
Q: Where can I go on campus toeat?A: The main University of Kent caféis the No.1 Bistro located in theRochester Building. There are alsofacilities in the Drill Hall Library, thePilkington Building and food isserved at the Coopers bar.
Q: I am an international student,where can I get help?A: There is an International students’welcome on Friday from 11.30-12.30.

Q: Where can I get cash oncampus?A: The cash point is located at theNorth Road side of the PilkingtonBuilding. Please refer to the map onpage 15. If you are living at LibertyQuays there is also a cash pointoutside Tesco.
Q: The printers on campus all needprinter credit, where can this bepurchased?A: Printer credit machines areaccessible in the Drill Hall Library,on the fourth floor of the GillinghamBuilding and in the Financereception of the Medway Building.
Q: What do I need to do to setup astudent bank account?A: All of the main High Street bankshave branches in either Chatham orGillingham. They will generallyrequire confirmation of your place atUniversity, either in the form of yourUCAS letter or as a status letter. Allstatus letters are produced byStudent Administration in theGillingham Building. They areavailable from week 3 onwards.
Q: Where is the University’smedical centre?A: The Medway campus does nothave an on-site medical centre.Instead students should contactStudent Services and they willadvise you on local medicalfacilities.
Q: I am an overseas student andhave a question relating to my Visa,who should I speak to?A: All Visa enquiries are dealt withby the Student Advisors at GKUnions Together. Please contacteither Jill Plows ([email protected])or Paul West ([email protected])to book an appointment to seethem.
Q: At school I received learningsupport for dyslexia, where can Ifind out about similar help at theUniversity?A: The Student Learning AdvisoryService deals with all student
queries regarding learning support.You can find them on the Groundfloor of the Gillingham Building.
Q: I am struggling to adapt toUniversity life, who can I talk to? A: Your first port of call would be theStudent Support Assistant who canbe found in the Medway Buildingroom 1-03. From there she candiscuss the different options youhave and if necessary recommendto you the relevant help on campus.
Q: Where can I find out details andapply for a Student Oyster card fortravel in London?A: All Oyster card information isprovided by the Universities atMedway Student Association. Forinformation please go the PilkingtonBuilding reception.
