  • Love and relationships are very challenging. Many a time we have our ways of defining it and dealing with it in our own favorable manner. We fail to reflectively review our attitudes and approaches and to rectify false practices that would one day disillusion us when we lose everything we had taken for granted. Simple example, take our prayers and practice of devotions. We pray to God for whatever we need and like to have. Though we believe that God is our Creator and we have to return to Him after this life, how little time do we take to think about God, His plan for us when He created us? We have the false notion of prayer as an exercise of presenting a list of our needs and demands to God as if He is not aware of what is going on with us. Jesus reminds us that not even a sparrow falls to the ground without His knowing and that every hair on our head (if you have any left!) is accounted for. True prayer is reflecting on the greatness of God for creating the universe and everything on it including the human beings, His benevolence and compassionate heart that allows us time to repent on our misdeeds, His patient awaiting for our return to Him, His sacrificing His only Son to save us, etc. the more we reflect on God, the more we feel closer to Him, feel His love for us. We can praise Him, love Him, adore Him without any hesitation. Such spontaneity is true devotion and genuine prayer. When we are able to love Him with such intensity, we don’t need to submit a list of our needs. He already knows them and will grant them if that is for our benefit. That is where love of God leads to personal faith. Such spirituality will facilitate our healthy human relationships. Couples should take time to reflect on the good ness of the other person. Together they should take time frequently to share it and enhance their intimacy with and loyalty to each other. When we are able to acknowledge the good ness of the other, many deficiencies will be easily sidelined and relationship becomes stronger and genuine. Children should be trained to appreciate their siblings and share their good qualities and love one another. They should be trained how to appreciate the sacrifices and generosity of their parents and thank them frequently. They should not be allowed to take for granted whatever they have or they receive. Gratitude is the beginning of Christian life and key to its spirituality. They should be trained to thank God always for whatever they have, including the parents, their life and all. This is how we create a Christian attitude from very young age. God bless you all

—Miguel Arias, Copyright © J. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION SAINT MARTHA (first century)

July 29 Whether you find Martha Stewart admirable or annoying, she has the perfect patron saint. Luke describes Martha—saint, not Stewart—as “burdened with much serving” (Luke 10:40). About Mary, seated, listening to Jesus, Martha complained, “Do you not care that my sister has left me by myself to do the serving?” Jesus’ response, “Martha, Martha, you are anxious and worried about many things . . . Mary has chosen the better part” (10:41, 42), suggests to some the superiority of the contemplative life, leaving the rest of us, supporting families, earning livings, (helping others?), as second-class Christians. But Luke introduces Martha and Mary immediately after Jesus’ parable of the Good Samaritan, whom Jesus recommends as a model of practical compassion, concluding, “Go and do likewise” (10:37). Go and do! Sit and listen! Discipleship is never either/or but both/and. Jesus ministered in prayerful silence and hospitable service. Monastic calendars add Martha’s sister, Mary, and brother, Lazarus, calling all three “hosts of the Lord,” recalling their welcome of Jesus to their home in Bethany, reminding us Whom we welcome whenever we extend summertime hospitality! —Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

    A SHARE IN GOD’S KINGDOM

Today concludes a three-week series of Gospel texts in which we have listened to a total of seven parables about the Kingdom. The believer is asked to consider the request that God made of Solomon in today’s first reading: “Ask something of me and I will give it to you” (1 Kings 3:5). Today’s parables about the treasure buried in the field and the pearl of great price should prompt us to answer, “A share in your kingdom, O God!” Today we discover that the kingdom of God is beyond value, a priceless treasure. Unfortunately, our culture bombards us with things that it believes are priceless treasures—the bigger and better SUVs, anti-aging and anti-balding creams and salves, miracle diets, and so much more. Having a share in God’s kingdom and helping to bring about that kingdom are the greatest treasures that we can ever hope to gain. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

    Y_[r of St. Jos_ph 2020/ El [ño ^_ S[n José 2020

July – Joseph Most Faithful Fidelity connotes steadfastness. In the vicissitudes of life, one needs

steadfast love, that is, fidelity, when encountering confusion, suffering, and failure. The image of Joseph finding a place in which the Child could be born was his movement in all of life. Failure simply meant one went on in fidelity and found by failure what God had intended

for the fruitfulness of His will.

The decree of Pope Pius IX that declared St. Joseph Patron of the Universal Church: Quemadmodum Deus.

“Him whom countless kings and prophets had desired to see, Joseph not only saw but conversed with, and embraced in paternal affection, and kissed. He most dil-igently reared Him whom the faithful were to receive as the bread that came down from heaven whereby they might obtain eternal life. Because of this sublime dignity which God conferred on his most faithful serv-ant, the Church has always most highly honored and praised blessed Joseph next to his spouse, the Virgin Mother of God, and has besought his intercession in times of trouble. And now therefore, when in these most troublesome times the Church is beset by enemies on every side, and is weighed down by calamities so heavy that ungodly men assert that the gates of hell have at length prevailed against her, the venera-ble prelates of the whole Catholic world have presented to the Sovereign Pontiff their own petitions and those of the faithful committed to their charge, praying that he would deign to constitute St. Joseph Patron of the Church.” Visit the Year of St. Joseph website throughout 2020 for a list of activities, pilgrimages, devotions, prayers, and more: www. YearofStJoseph.org.
