In His immense wisdom God has given us free

will. We have the opportunity to make our own

choices. We are given fire and water. We can

choose life or death. ( Sir 15:15-20). And we are responsible for the consequences. The awareness

that He sees even the innermost thoughts of ours

cautions us to be genuine. We have to walk the

way of the Lord and live in holiness.

For some this overseeing God is frightening. Our

God is not intimidating but lovingly inviting us to

live with the longing for the Eternal Joy He has

prepared for those who love Him (1 Cor 2:6-10).

This revelation of His wisdom through His Spirit

for our glory is well established in His plan for us.

Jesus revealed Him to us as the loving and providing Father eagerly awaiting our homecom-

ing . For those who love Him He is never intimi-

dating but always enticingly inviting us to make

right choices and receive the gift of eternal glory.

We have to review our life every day to see

whether we care to make choices pleasing to

this Father.

In our daily family prayer we must discuss with

our children about this caring Father’s concern for our salvation. We have to discuss how much

more we need to love Him and show our devo-

tion to Him through making good choices in life.

This awareness of a loving, protecting and providing God will help the children to develop a

filial affection for Him everyday . Then we have

to train them to thank Him always, to pray for

His guidance always, and to carefully avoid bad

choices in life.

Thus give them the foundation of our faith,

rooted in our relationship with God. Then the

awareness of His seeing our thoughts and deeds

will be encouraging them knowing that His grace

will strengthen us to make right choices always .

God bless you all .

From the Pastor’s Desk / Del Escritorio del Padre

—Miguel Arias, © Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION ASH WEDNESDAY

Prayer, fasting, and almsgiving: these disciplines, prescribed by Jesus himself in the Sermon on the Mount, along with strict instructions not to flaunt them in public to win recognition and praise (Matthew 6:1-18), have been embraced by all the saints at the beginning of every Lent for almost two thousand years. But mention Lent, and many react with a grimace or slight shudder—even now, years after official obligations have been reduced to a minimum! No wonder the Eastern Rite’s “Lenten Announcement” sounds surprising: “Let us receive with joy, O faithful people, the divinely inspired announcement of Lent! The Lenten Spring shines forth! Begin the fast with joy! Let us fast from passions as well as food, taking pleasure in the good works of the Spirit, and accomplishing them in love!” Saint John Chrysostom, whose feast is September 13, elaborates: “Do you fast? Give proof by your works. If you see a poor person, take pity. An enemy, be reconciled. A friend gaining honor, don’t be jealous.” A positive approach! May the saints help us keep such a Lent!—Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

FOOLISHNESS

Sometimes the idea of repentance seems old-fashioned, naïve, even foolish. But if you’re looking for real foolishness, you’ll find it in today’s readings.

We begin with Leviticus and the admonition, “Take no revenge and cherish no grudge” (Leviticus 19:18). We’ve heard that message before, of course, so we might forget how far it is from the so-called “practical realities of life.” Saint Paul warns us about being practical, though. Whoever considers oneself wise had better “become a fool,” because “the wisdom of this world is foolishness in the eyes of God” (1 Corinthians 3:18, 19).

This “foolishness” continues in the Gospel: “Offer no resistance to one who is evil” (Matthew 5:39). In fact, offer the other cheek when you’ve been slapped. Hand over your coat as well as your shirt. Be like God, who sends sunshine and rain on the bad as well as the good. “So be perfect,” says Jesus, “just as your heavenly Father is perfect” (5:48). NECEDAD

Copyright © J. S. Paluch

An effective means of obtaining special graces through the intercession of St. Joseph is to honor his seven sorrows and seven joys by the practicing the Seven Sundays devotion. The Seven Sundays in honor of St. Joseph are observed by receiving Holy Communion in his honor on seven consecutive Sundays, and on each Sunday the prayers in honor of the Seven Sorrows and the Seven Joys of St. Joseph are recited. This devotion may be practiced at any time of the year, but especially on the seven Sundays preceding his solemnity on March 19th. .
