ILA BlockGuided Reading Block• Making Meaning – Resource for teaching comprehension skills and

strategies using whole group instruction and responding with a partner

• 3 groups/day small group lessons focus on needs of the students

• Other students working independently with a choice of reading activities which may include: read to self, read to other, monologues, readers theater, poetry, spelling word work, vocabulary activities, and writing about reading options, as well as others as the year goes on.

*We will be sharing students during the ILA block with Gina Carlson’s class.*

Math• Everyday Mathematics is a math resource that is based on

the idea that students build understanding and develop skills as a result of many meaningful and connected learning experiences.

-Student Reference Book -Family Letters (Keep these, the answers to homework

are included.)-Home Links -Math Games-Repeated Exposure and experience (Math Boxes)

• Math Intervention Time• -Specific skill or concept instruction – small group• -those not in groups – games, challenges, math boxes

ConferencesOctober Conferences are goal setting conferences. I will share with you my brief observations so far into the year, and then we will talk about a couple of goals for your child. Please come with questions and ideas for goals you may have to prepare for your conference.

-October 6th, 9th, and 14th -February 10th, 12th , and 17th

PLEASE MAKE SURE YOU HAVE SIGNED UP FOR A CONFERENCE TIME BEFORE LEAVING TONIGHT. COMPUTERS ARE AVAILABLE IN THE LOWER LAB IN THE MAIN HALLWAY.

Performance Testing

• These are the testing windows. I will give you the more specific dates as the time approaches. But please refrain from scheduling vacations and appointments during these weeks.

Homework• Reading is most important – keep track in planner• Spelling practice• Get outside and play each afternoon/evening

• I will be sending a short packet of work to be done at home throughout the week. The packet will be sent home on Friday or the last day of the school week and collected the following Friday. The packet is meant to teach responsibility and planning, and for adults to see what we are learning. Watch for the green Family Letter at the beginning of each math unit. It has the key for all HomeLinks.

• It is important to try and provide a structured/scheduled time at home. Each night…

Lunch/Recess ProceduresRecess and Lunch Times • Lunch 1:00-1:25• Recess 1:25-1:50

-Students who finish lunch early will be able to go outside when 1st group goes out.-If students are still eating they have the full 25 minutes to eat and go out at 1:25.-Recess paras will be taking the students outside and will be supervising the playground. Students are to report problems occurring at recess to our recess para, Mrs.Gupta.

You are welcome to join your student for lunch any day. Just meet us down by the cafeteria after signing in at the front desk.
