Sunderland Literature Festival,our annual celebration of the writtenword, has something for everyone. The programme features many local artists and authors, with highlightsincluding Kate Adie, Bethan Roberts and Bryan and Mary Talbot.

The majority of the events are FREE. If you need further information about anyevent please enquire at the venue wherethe event will take place.

If you haven’t been to the festival or alibrary service event before, look throughthe programme and try something new.You’ll be surprised at what’s on offer. We are using a variety of local venues, so you should be able to find somethingnear to where you live.

We’re organising some events just for schools. These are listed at the back of the programme. You can find out more from our Schools Library Service.

Mary Ann Cotton preceded Jack theRipper and over an eight-year periodpoisoned her victims and in most casesbenefited from their insurance money. Inthis talk, Stephanie will question whetherthis was the last of a long line of deaths byher hand or if she was a mother caring forher family against a background ofpoverty and poor medical facilities.

Hissketches have helped identify theperpetrators of many crimes in the regionover the years. Mark Blacklock grew up inSunderland (the familybusiness was Blacklock andSon Jewellers in FawcettStreet) and has since livedin Sheffield, Oxford, Tokyo

and London. His first novel, I’m Jack, waspublished by Granta in June 2015. I’mJack is the story of the Yorkshire Ripperhoaxer – aka Wearside Jack- whose tapedmessages misled police to believe theRipper was from Sunderland. In thissession, Mark will discuss his novel.

Bethan Roberts won aJerwood/Arvon YoungWriters’ Award for her firstnovel, The Pools. Hersecond novel, The GoodPlain Cook, based on the art

collector Peggy Guggenheim’s life inSussex, was a BBC Radio 4, Book atBedtime and was chosen as one of TimeOut’s books of the year. My Policeman, thestory of a young police officer, his wife,and his male lover, set in 1950s Brighton,was selected as the 2012 Brighton CityReads book and was an Irish Times bookof the year. She also writes drama for BBCRadio 4, and short fiction (she has wonboth the Olive Cook and the Pin Drop shortstory awards). Her latest novel, MotherIsland, has won a Jerwood FictionUncovered Prize. She lives in Brightonwith her family.

Nicola Maxwell:The BackhouseEnquiry ExhibitionNorthern Gallery for Contemporary ArtNicola Maxwell’s new photographic series‘The Backhouse Enquiry’ looks at thehistory of Sunderland Museum andLibrary re-presenting some of the veryfirst artefacts donated by Victorianphilanthropist Edward Backhouse to whatbecame Sunderland Museum, then thefirst municipally funded museum outsideof London.

The photographs examine the Victorianobsession with cataloguing all of thenatural world in its minutest detail, anddiscovering nature’s secrets by examiningflora and fauna under a microscope.

Alan Gibbons has won the BluePeter Book Award 'The Book I Couldn't PutDown' and sixteen other awards. He spentmany years as a teacher before becominga professional writer.

Dan SmithOn Tuesday 20 October Dan Smith willdiscuss adventure survival stories foryoung people .My Friend the Enemy(2013) was long listed for the BranfordBoase Award and received a specialcommendation at the North East BookAward. My Brother’s Secret was publishedin 2014, with Big Game following in 2015.
