THE COLLECT OF THE DAYGod be with you.

And also with you.

Let us pray.

Creator God, you form us on the wheel oflife as a potter molds the clay. Shape usinto holy vessels, bearing the mark of yourwise crafting, that we may remain strongand useful through years of faithful andobedient service in Christ’s name. Amen.

The Lord be with you.

And with thy spirit.

Let us pray.

Grant us, O Lord, we pray thee, to trust inthee with all our heart; seeing that, as thoudost alway resist the proud who confide intheir own strength, so thou dost not forsakethose who make their boast of thy mercy;through Jesus Christ our Lord, who livethand reigneth with thee and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

FIRST READING Please be seated. Jeremiah 18:1-11

The word that came to Jeremiah from the LORD: “Come, go down to the potter’shouse, and there I will let you hear my words.” So I went down to the potter’shouse, and there he was working at his wheel. The vessel he was making of claywas spoiled in the potter’s hand, and he reworked it into another vessel, as seemedgood to him.

Then the word of the LORD came to me: Can I not do with you, O house of Israel, just as this potter has done? says the LORD. Just like the clay in the potter’s hand,so are you in my hand, O house of Israel. At one moment I may declareconcerning a nation or a kingdom, that I will pluck up and break down anddestroy it, but if that nation, concerning which I have spoken, turns from its evil, Iwill change my mind about the disaster that I intended to bring on it. And atanother moment I may declare concerning a nation or a kingdom that I will buildand plant it, but if it does evil in my sight, not listening to my voice, then I willchange my mind about the good that I had intended to do to it. Now, therefore, say to the people of Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem: Thus says theLORD:Look, I am a potter shaping evil against you and devising a plan against you. Turnnow, all of you from your evil way, and amend your ways and your doings.

Hear what the Spirit is saying to God’s people. Thanks be to God.

The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

(8:00) Psalm 139:1-5, 12-17 Domine, probastiPlease read responsively. Low voices read the odd verses and high verses read the even verses. Allread the last verse together.

1 LORD, you have searched me out and known me; *you know my sitting down and my rising up;you discern my thoughts from afar.

2 You trace my journeys and my resting-places *and are acquainted with all my ways.

3 Indeed, there is not a word on my lips, *but you, O LORD, know it altogether.

4 You press upon me behind and before *and lay your hand upon me.

5 Such knowledge is too wonderful for me; *it is so high that I cannot attain to it.

12 For you yourself created my inmost parts; *you knit me together in my mother's womb.

13 I will thank you because I am marvelously made; *your works are wonderful, and I know it well.

14 My body was not hidden from you, *while I was being made in secretand woven in the depths of the earth.

15 Your eyes beheld my limbs, yet unfinished in the womb;all of them were written in your book; *they were fashioned day by day, when as yet there was none of them.

16 How deep I find your thoughts, O God! *how great is the sum of them!

17 If I were to count them, they would be more in number than the sand; *to count them all, my life span would need to be like yours.

SECOND READING Philemon 1-21

Paul, a prisoner of Christ Jesus, and Timothy our brother,

To Philemon our dear friend and co-worker, to Apphia our sister, to Archippusour fellow soldier, and to the church in your house:

Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

When I remember you in my prayers, I always thank my God because I hear ofyour love for all the saints and your faith toward the Lord Jesus. I pray that thesharing of your faith may become effective when you perceive all the good thatwe may do for Christ. I have indeed received much joy and encouragement fromyour love, because the hearts of the saints have been refreshed through you, mybrother.

For this reason, though I am bold enough in Christ to command you to do yourduty, yet I would rather appeal to you on the basis of love— and I, Paul, do this asan old man, and now also as a prisoner of Christ Jesus. I am appealing to you formy child, Onesimus, whose father I have become during my imprisonment.Formerly he was useless to you, but now he is indeed useful both to you and tome. I am sending him, that is, my own heart, back to you. I wanted to keep himwith me, so that he might be of service to me in your place during myimprisonment for the gospel; but I preferred to do nothing without your consent,in order that your good deed might be voluntary and not something forced.Perhaps this is the reason he was separated from you for a while, so that youmight have him back forever, no longer as a slave but more than a slave, a belovedbrother— especially to me but how much more to you, both in the flesh and inthe Lord.

So if you consider me your partner, welcome him as you would welcome me. If hehas wronged you in any way, or owes you anything, charge that to my account. I,Paul, am writing this with my own hand: I will repay it. I say nothing about yourowing me even your own self. Yes, brother, let me have this benefit from you inthe Lord! Refresh my heart in Christ. Confident of your obedience, I am writing toyou, knowing that you will do even more than I say.

Hear what the Spirit is saying to God’s people. Thanks be to God.

The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

THE HOLY GOSPEL Luke 14:25-33

The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christaccording to Luke. †

B Glory to you, Lord Christ.

The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christaccording to Luke. †

B Glory be to thee, O Lord.

Now large crowds were traveling with Jesus; and he turned and said to them,“Whoever comes to me and does not hate father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters, yes, and even life itself, cannot be my disciple. Whoever doesnot carry the cross and follow me cannot be my disciple. For which of you, intending to build a tower, does not first sit down and estimate the cost, to seewhether he has enough to complete it? Otherwise, when he has laid a foundationand is not able to finish, all who see it will begin to ridicule him, saying, ‘Thisfellow began to build and was not able to finish.’ Or what king, going out to wagewar against another king, will not sit down first and consider whether he is ablewith ten thousand to oppose the one who comes against him with twentythousand? If he cannot, then, while the other is still far away, he sends adelegation and asks for the terms of peace. So therefore, none of you can becomemy disciple if you do not give up all your possessions.”

The Gospel of the Lord.B Praise to you, Lord Christ.

The Gospel of the Lord.B Praise be to thee, O Christ.

The Gospel Acclamation is repeated.

\⁄ We lift them up unto the Lord.

Let us give thanks unto our Lord God.

B It is meet and right so to do.

We praise you and we bless you, holy and gracious God, source of life abundant. Frombefore time you made ready the creation. Your Spirit moved over the deep and broughtall things into being: sun, moon, and stars; earth, winds, and waters; and every livingthing. You made us in your image, and taught us to walk in your ways. But we rebelledagainst you, and wandered far away; and yet, as a mother cares for her children, youwould not forget us. Time and again you called us to live in the fullness of your love.

And so this day we join with Saints and Angels in the chorus of praise that ringsthrough eternity, lifting our voices to magnify you as we sing (say):

Please stand or kneel.

Glory and honor and praise to you, holy and living God. To deliver us from the powerof sin and death and to reveal the riches of your grace, you looked with favor uponMary, your willing servant, that she might conceive and bear a son, Jesus the holy childof God. Living among us, Jesus loved us. He broke bread with outcasts and sinners, healed the sick, and proclaimed good news to the poor. He yearned to draw all theworld to himself yet we were heedless of his call to walk in love. Then, the time camefor him to complete upon the cross the sacrifice of his life, and to be glorified by you.

On the night before he died for us, Jesus was at table with his friends. He took bread, gave thanks to you, broke it, and gave it to them, and said: “Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.”

As supper was ending, Jesus took the cup of wine. Again, he gave thanks to you, gave it to them, and said: “Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is poured out for you and for all for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drinkit, do this for the remembrance of me.”

Now gathered at your table,

O God of all creation, and remembering Christ, crucified and risen, who was and is and is to come,we offer to you our gifts of bread and wine, and ourselves, a living sacrifice.

Page 18: Welcome to Sunday Morning at St. John’s to Sunday Morning at St. John’s We are gathered to celebrate God’s gifts and sent to respond to the needs of the world. Sixteenth Sunday

Pour out your Spirit upon these gifts that they may be the Body and Blood of Christ.Breathe your Spirit over the whole earth and make us your new creation, the Body ofChrist given for the world you have made. In the fullness of time bring us, GregorioAglipay (Priest and Founder of the Philippine Independent Church), Elie Naud(Huguenot Witness to the Faith), Nikolai Grundtvig (Bishop and Hymn Writer) SørenKierkegaard (Teacher and Philosopher), Constance and her Companions (The Martyrsof Memphis), Alexander Crummel (Priest, Missionary, and Education), Mary theGodbearer, John our Patron and all your saints, from every tribe and language andpeople and nation, to feast at the banquet prepared from the foundation of the world.

Through Christ and with Christ and in Christ, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, to you behonor, glory, and praise, for ever and ever.

AmenSung by the cantor, please repeat. AMEN.

THE LORD’S PRAYERYou are welcome to pray in whatever language or version you prefer.

As our Savior Christ has taught us,we now pray,

Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your Name, your kingdom come, your will be done,

on earth as in heaven.Give us today our daily bread.Forgive us our sins,

as we forgive thosewho sin against us.

Save us from the time of trial, and deliver us from evil.

For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and for ever. Amen.

And now, as our Savior Christ hastaught us, we are bold to say,

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done,

on earth as it is in heaven.Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses,

as we forgive those whotrespass against us.

And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and

the power, and the glory, for everand ever. Amen.
