MINISTRIES & OUTREACHES

Appalachia Outreach 2019 One week to go! We leave on Saturday morning, July 13. Our Go Fund Me page for our mission trip is still accepting donations. If you prefer to donate online, the Go Fund Me page is quick and easy. You can sponsor a team through the site or packets are still available at the doors of the church for individual sponsorship of a team member. Your support, in donations and prayer, are so important to the success of our mission trip. Thank you for all your support. https://www.gofundme.com/gfp74-appalachia-2019

Coins for Babies Outreach Please return your "Coins for Babies" bottles. Collection baskets are located at the church entrances. You may also bring them to the parish office (summer hours: 9:00am - 2:00pm). If you didn't get a baby bottle, any container or bag will do. Your contributions provide new and expectant mothers with the basic necessities for their babies. During the 2018/2098 campaign, we were able to provide Birthright in Dover with 243 boxes of diapers, 265 bottles of baby wash, 292 packs of baby wipes, 252 jars of petroleum jelly, 123 tubes of diaper cream as well as new seasonal clothing, socks, sleepwear, bibs, towels, wash cloths, blankets and crib sheets. We purchase only those items specifically requested and deliver as needed. A number of very generous and caring parishioners contribute throughout the year. Additional contributions may be brought to the parish office or you can contact Jane Flynn at [email protected]. Knit and crocheted baby blankets and clothing are always appreciated. Please be as generous as possible to this very worthy cause.

Weekly Reflections Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Old Testament Isaiah 66:10-14c New Testament Luke 10:1-12,17-20

The prophets of the Old Testament have much to tell us. They obviously focus on the future, telling us what is out there for the people of their time and for us today. It is their role to give us the realization that what they prophesied did in fact come to pass.

When we move to Luke’s Gospel, we hear that Christ sends out even more followers than the number of prophets. This is not just Christ sending out His 12 apostles. He sent out 72 disciples to every town He intended to visit. It was very much like the advance men we see the candidates sending out advance parties to prepare the way for their candidate. Christ sent out 72 in pairs. That is a very significant part of how those were sent out, they were sent two by two, this was to give each one sent out with a partner to help each encourage the other when things got difficult, to help them stay on message.

When they returned to Christ they were rejoicing and said, “Lord, even the demons are subject to us because of your name.” This is a different image than we usually see. We think of Christ traveling with a few followers, but here we are being told that there are many who were willing to leave home and family and business to go preach about Christ’s message and person. The Gospels were now speaking of followers ranging in numbers from 1000, 4,000 and 5,000. His story and message seem to be drawing many followers, showing that Christ is an amazing success at this time. It seems to be a faraway possibility that these same people who were going to turn on Him, and hand Him over to Pilate.

Lord, help us stay faithful to you, and help us to work with others to spread your message.

A FRESH PERSPECTIVE ON THE SUNDAY READINGS HIS WORD TODAY by Rev. William J. Reilly Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time “At that time the Lord appointed seventy-two others whom he sent ahead of him in pairs to every town and place he intended to visit. He said to them ‘the harvest is abundant, but the laborers are few; so ask the master of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest. Go on your way; behold, I am sending you like lambs among wolves.” Imagine being one of those sent. Who is your companion, as you go to bring the message of Jesus to someone else. Is your partner the talkative type, allowing you to remain present, but quiet? To whom will you go, either knocking on a door, stopping by a hospital bed, saying hello to someone in the laundromat? Isn’t it interesting to wrestle with the answers? Well, you are one of the lucky ones, not among the seventy-two, but among all the baptized to work in bringing in the harvest. If someone doesn’t do his or her part, the harvest fails, dies, or simply rots. It is out there and the Lord needs people to follow His call as priests and deacons, as religious and committed lay workers, as missionary disciples. The good thing is, we do not do it alone but the Lord accompanies you. There is work to be done and I heard that He is asking you to do it. Talk to someone about it today and fulfill your potential.
