KYRIE ELEISON “Kyrie for Pentecost” CARL MAULTSBY

SALUTATION AND COLLECT OF THE DAY Celebrant The Lord be with you. People And also with you.

Celebrant Let us pray. Almighty God, you have built your Church upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief cornerstone: Grant us so to be joined together in unity of spirit by their teaching, that we may be made a holy temple acceptable to you; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.

All Amen.

THE FIRST READING Jeremiah 28:5-9 The prophet Jeremiah spoke to the prophet Hananiah in the presence of the priests and all the people who were standing in the house of the Lord; and the prophet Jeremiah said, “Amen! May the Lord do so; may the Lord fulfill the words that you have prophesied, and bring back to this place from Babylon the vessels of the house of the Lord, and all the exiles. But listen now to this word that I speak in your hearing and in the hearing of all the people. The prophets who preceded you and me from ancient times prophesied war, famine, and pestilence against many countries and great kingdoms. As for the prophet who prophesies peace, when the word of that prophet comes true, then it will be known that the Lord has truly sent the prophet.”

(Silence) Reader Hear what the Spirit is saying to God’s people. People Thanks be to God.

THE EPISTLE READING Romans 6:12-23

Do not let sin exercise dominion in your mortal bodies, to make you obey their passions. No longer present your members to sin as instruments of wickedness, but present yourselves to God as those who have been brought from death to life, and present your members to God as instruments of righteousness. For sin will have no dominion over you, since you are not under law but under grace. What then? Should we sin because we are not under law but under grace? By no means! Do you not know that if you present yourselves to anyone as obedient slaves, you are slaves of the one whom you obey, either of sin, which leads to death, or of obedience, which leads to righteousness? But thanks be to God that you, having once been slaves of sin, have become obedient from the heart to the form of teaching to which you were entrusted, and that you, having been set free from sin, have become slaves of righteousness. I am speaking in human terms because of your natural limitations. For just as you once presented your members as slaves to impurity and to greater and greater iniquity, so now present your members as slaves to righteousness for sanctification. When you were slaves of sin, you were free in regard to righteousness. So what advantage did you then get from the things of which you now are ashamed? The end of those things is death. But now that you have been freed from sin and enslaved to God, the advantage you get is sanctification. The end is eternal life. For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. (Silence) Reader Hear what the Spirit is saying to God’s people. People Thanks be to God.

THE HOLY GOSPEL Matthew 10:40-42 Gospeller The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Matthew. People Glory to you, Lord Christ. Jesus said, “Whoever welcomes you welcomes me, and whoever welcomes me welcomes the one who sent me. Whoever welcomes a prophet in the name of a prophet will receive a prophet's reward; and whoever welcomes a righteous person in the name of a righteous person will receive the reward of the righteous; and whoever gives even a cup of cold water to one of these little ones in the name of a disciple-- truly I tell you, none of these will lose their reward.” Gospeller The Gospel of the Lord. People Praise to you, Lord Christ. SERMON NICENE CREED Book of Common Prayer, p. 358

All We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

SPECIAL PRAYER IN THIS TIME OF PANDEMIC Deacon Keep us, good Lord, under the shadow of your mercy. Sustain and support the

anxious, be with those who care for the sick, and lift up all who are brought low; that we may find comfort knowing that nothing can separate us from your love in Christ Jesus our Lord. Amen.

SPECIAL PRAYER FOR RACIAL JUSTICE

All Dear God, we reach out to You to express our wrong. But we pray for more than conviction. We pray, O Lord, for change. Change the easy peace we make with ourselves into discontent because of the oppression of others. Change our tendency to defend ourselves into the freedom that comes from being forgiven and empowered through your love. Change our need for disguises, excuses, and images into the ability to be honest with ourselves and open with one another. Change our inclination to judge others into a desire to serve and uplift others. And most of all, Lord, change our routine worship and work into genuine encounter with you and our better selves so that our lives will be changed for the good of all.

At the same time, O Lord, we take heart: Your Spirit empowers us to move from the ways of death to the ways of new life. We know that our sins can be forgiven. Let us forgive one another and give ourselves to one another in joyful community of justice and peace. In Jesus' Precious Name. Amen PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE FORM VI We offer our intersessions today using Form VI of the Prayers of the People found on page 392 of the “Book of Common Prayer.” The Celebrant and People pray responsively

OFFERTORY ANTHEM “Where cross the crowded ways of life”. DAVID HURD Bryant Williams, tenor

At the offertory, we gratefully offer back to God some of what God has given us in the money we give.

All are invited to make a gift to support the St. Richard’s ministry of sharing God’s love with the world by making an online donation at http://www.strichards.org/giving.

THE LORD’S PRAYER, Book of Common Prayer, p. 364

All Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

PRAYER AT THIS TIME OF FASTING FROM HOLY COMMUNION

Celebrant A “spiritual communion” is a devotional that we can participate in at any time to express the desire to receive the Holy Communion. Current circumstances impede us from physically partaking of the body and blood of Jesus Christ. The St. Richard’s Community is therefore fasting from the bread and wine of the Eucharist and participating in “spiritual communion” with God and each other. Let us pray:

All Jesus Christ our Lord, we believe that you are truly present in the Blessed

Sacrament of the Altar which this community faithfully celebrated before our world changed. We love you above all things, and long for you in our souls. Since we cannot now receive you sacramentally, come spiritually into our hearts we pray. As though you have already come, we embrace you and unite ourselves entirely to you. Help us to know and feel that we are always connected to you and to each other across time and space. We pray this until we are reunited physically and can share the Body of Christ, the bread of heaven, the Blood of Christ, the cup of salvation. Amen.

BLESSING
