Pastor’s Note Dear Parishioners, The Catholic Stewardship Appeal (CSA) is the vehicle by which we support many worthy causes in our diocese. It enables us as a diocese to feed the poor, shelter the homeless, sustain rural parishes, care for the unborn and HIV/AIDS patients, help senior citizens, educate seminarians, deacons and priests, train catechists and youth ministers, as well as provide support for youth programs and televised masses. It also provides for the campus ministry at UNLV and many other worthy ministries within the diocese. As Christians, we are brought up to believe in these causes. Through CSA we are given an opportunity to put our beliefs into action. Last year, St. Elizabeth Ann Seton’s assessment was $243,028. Of our over 3300 active families, 745 families pledged and paid $293,944. As a result we received $50,916 over our assessment which was used to replace one of our aging air conditioning units in the church. For the year 2014 our diocesan assessment is $234,448. It is our responsibility as a parish to support the diocese in the programs and ministries mentioned above. That being said, I ask that you prayerfully consider a pledge of $500 or more according to your blessings. Since your pledge can be paid in ten monthly installments ($50 x 10) this will hopefully not be a huge burden. Those who cannot afford the fair share pledge, please consider what you can afford and be part of this worthy cause. To others, I ask you to please pray for the success of this drive. Please know that all the money collected over $234,448 will come back to St. Elizabeth.

There are two goals we would like to obtain through our CSA rebates. The first goal is to replace another 40-ton air conditioning unit. Secondly, to create a tuition-free Faith Formation Program and lower our school tuition so that many more children can receive Faith Formation and a Catholic Education. Jesus’ last mandate was to go out to all the nations to teach and baptize. Above all, we should take that mandate seriously. Our patroness St. Elizabeth Ann Seton gave us the model by starting the very first tuition free Catholic school. She is our inspiration and our guide. Your help is needed in this worthy cause. The pledges made by this community will enable our parish to stand up, side by side with the other churches in this diocese and face the challenges ahead. It will also help us to re-new our commitment to one another. In this bulletin you will find your Catholic Stewardship Appeal pledge card. Please fill it out and return it to the parish office or simply drop it in the collection basket on Sunday. Each month you will receive a reminder for your installment payment. Your tax deductible letter will be sent to you at the end of the calendar year. Please pray for me and the development of this parish. I, of course, will continue to pray for you. Sincerely yours, Fr. Bede Wevita Pastor

Treasures from our Tradition Through the centuries, artists and craftspeople have depicted Jesus' baptism in the Jordan River by John. At first in mosaics and frescoes, and later in tapestries, stained glass, and paintings, the scene is familiar. Jesus is standing waist-high in flowing water. Above him, standing on dry land, John the Baptist pours water over Jesus. The first artists to depict this were sketching from memory. This is exactly how most people were baptized in the early days: as adults, standing or kneeling in the water, with water poured over their heads. This method of baptizing, called immersion, is the favored way today. An adult enters a font, or an infant is lowered a bit into the water supported by a parent's hand, and water is poured or splashed over them. The treasures of baptistry art attest that submersion, or plunging beneath the water's surface, is not really in our tradition, and that "infusion," the mere pouring of a few drops of water, yields too narrow an understanding of what it means to be plunged into Christ's life. Jesus Christ has gone before us into the water, and waits for us there with abundant gifts. No wonder the tradition calls for abundant symbols!. —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

CARRY THE LOAD The chief thing is to take the burden on one's shoulders. As you press forward, it soon shakes down and the load is evenly distributed. --St. John Bosco

The Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy We think of Jerusalem as both the earthly city where Christ’s Passion, Death, and Resurrection took place and the heavenly city to which we aspire. In this sense Jerusalem is the heavenly kingdom. In this heavenly Jerusalem, we will be united to God and one another in a deep bond of love, peace, and joy. Liturgy is a foretaste, a glimpse, of what the final destination will be like for us: a deep communion with God. In the present, we build communion through the words, prayers, music, actions, and gestures of the liturgy. God is present and empowering us to become what God desires: his holy people. While God’s immense goodness and love cannot be known fully in the present, the liturgy gives a glimpse of this deep love of communion. The 50th Anniversary of the Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy: A Parish Celebration © 2013 Archdiocese of Chicago: Liturgy Training Publications. Orders: 1-800-933-1800. Written by Kristopher W. Canary, Vicar General, Archdiocese of Chicago on June 5, 2013.

Send in the Clones?

In St. Paul's time, the church was so new that everyone remembered how they came to the faith. That's not a bad thing. Even today, in helping with the RCIA, I like to hear how the new converts were drawn to the Lord. But it seems that some people in Paul's time actually boasted about who baptized them. They acted as if they were better Christians because of the person whose preaching first attracted them. Paul, of course, would have no part in those rivalries. In fact, you can almost hear Paul laughing when he talks about people who consider Christ as just another leader of one of the factions. Christ should be the sign of unity for all Christians, not just one congregation. It may be even more difficult to seek unity today, with so many Christian churches and a modern view of diversity as somehow better than unity. While no one says they want to divide the body of Christ, I'm sure you know someone who thinks the only way to have a unified Church is for everyone to pray the same way they do. Yet even Paul did not expect all believers to be clones of one another. He frequently wrote about people having many different gifts, yet all working to build up the Body

of Christ. He doesn't mean that those gifts are divisive or that the Church survives in spite of them. Those differ-ences are necessary; we need all the gifts that the Spirit gives us. So what can we do to help unify the Church? First, do what Jesus himself did--pray for unity in the Church (John 17:20-21). Pray that you come to know what your own gifts are, have the courage to use them for the Church, and appreciate the gifts of others. Second, Paul was very aware of his own weaknesses. That's what he is talking about in the last line of the reading. Jesus had to die before he could rise from the dead. Without the cross, we would have never heard of the Resurrection. So also, without weakness, how can we experience God's strength? Instead of looking down on those with whom we disagree, look up to see what God may be revealing to you through that person's differences. Tom Schmidt, Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co.

“The proclamation of the Gospel is destined primarily to the poor, to those who often lack the essentials for a decent life. The good news is first announced to them, that God loves them before all others and comes to visit them through the acts of charity that the disciples of Christ carry out in his name.” (Pope Francis: 6/18/13)

This year, CSA needs to raise $840,261 for programs that assist the poor. Among the programs it supports are:

• Catholic Charities of Southern Nevada in helping to settle legal refugees by assisting, training and helping them become a productive part of our country. • Help the St. Therese Center serve those who are infected and affected by HIV/AIDS. • Partner with rural parishes too small on their own and too far from larger towns to continue the proclamation of the Gospel and the presence of the Catholic Church. • Work to support the ethical and justice doctrine of the Catholic Church. • Assist some of our retired priests who can not survive on their own.

“Isaiah’s invitation must resound in our hearts: “Comfort, comfort my people” (40:1) and this must lead to mission. We must find the Lord who consoles us and go to console the people of God. This is the mission. People today certainly need words, but most of all they need us to bear witness to the mercy and tenderness of the Lord, which warms the heart, rekindles hope, and attracts people towards the good. What a joy it is to bring God’s consolation to others! “(Pope Francis 7/7/13) This year, CSA needs to raise $145,000 to bring comfort and the mission of the church through communications including:

• Providing the locally televised Sunday Mass in the Las Vegas valley so that shut-ins and sick people may have a connection to the preaching and Sacramental life of the Church. • Assist in electronic communication including the Diocese of Las Vegas website to help link the people with the information they need including links to the daily readings and the TV Mass.

Pope Francis has inspired so many to renew their own faith. His words inspire our CSA campaign for 2014.

“A good priest can be recognized by the way his people are anointed: this is a clear proof. When our people are anointed with the oil of gladness, it is obvious: for example, when they leave Mass looking as if they have heard the good news. Our people like to hear the Gospel preached with “unction”, they like it when the Gospel we preach touches their daily lives, when it runs down like the oil of Aaron to the edges of reality, when it brings light to moments of extreme darkness, to the “outskirts” where people of faith are most exposed to the onslaught of those who want to tear down their faith. People thank us because they feel that we have prayed over the realities of their everyday lives, their troubles, their joys, their burdens and their hopes.” (Pope Francis 3/28/13, Chrism Mass) This year CSA needs to raise $1,214,739 to assist in faith and ministry formation and the proclamation of the teaching of the church through:

• Helping to train future ordained ministers as priests and deacons so that ministry can be provided to our local parishes. • Support the faith life of university students at UNLV through the ministry of the Catholic Newman Center. • Help to train catechists, youth ministers and adult leaders for their ministries in our parishes.

• Train volunteers and staff to keep children and teenagers safe. • Support the dignity of human life through Natural Family Planning and the healing of those affected by abortion through Project Rachael. • Assist in the leadership of our six Catholic elementary schools.

Pope Francis’ words also remind us why we reach out beyond the boundaries and comforts of our own parishes to assist each other. “Let us remember Paul VI’s words: “For the Catholic Church, no one is a stranger, no one is excluded, no one is far away” (Homily for the closing of the Second Vatican Council, 8 December 1965). Indeed, we are a single human family that is journeying on toward unity, making the most of solidarity and dialogue among peoples in the multiplicity of differences. (Pope Francis: 5/24/13) Thank you for your generosity that makes all these ministries possible in our diocese. Help your parish meet it’s assessment for the Catholic Stewardship Appeal this year.

A Stewardship Moment In today’s gospel we hear Jesus calling Peter, Andrew, James and John to follow him. Following Jesus was a difficult journey for these first disciples. It is difficult for us today. Jesus wants to teach us his way of thinking, acting and encountering the world. But it is not easy for us to embrace his teaching. Good stewards of Jesus’ teachings realize they are on a spiritual journey, and must learn from their experiences of being open and resistant to the gospel. They realize the need to be liberated from those actions that keep them from enjoying a closer friendship with Jesus. What is it in our lives that we need to reform? What keeps us from revealing God’s glory to others?

Good Stewards Our beautiful new hymnal lends dignity to worship; it says we are serious about giving praise to God through song. With these permanent hymnals our parish will save thousands of dollars compared with the never-ending subscription prices of a disposable worship aid. Help us take good care of our hymnals and do not fold over or “dog-ear” the pages. Thank you for being such good stewards!

Stewardship Saint Angela Merici Angela Merici was born in a small town in the Republic of Venice around 1470. She was orphaned when she was ten years old and moved in with relatives in the city of Brescia, in northern Italy. When Angela Merici returned to her hometown, she began to devote her life to the education of impoverished young women. In the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, education for women was reserved for the wealthy, and for nuns, who were the best educated. Angela loved working with children, and she believed that education and Christian formation were especially needed for young girls. She devoted her time to teaching girls in her home, which she had converted into a school. Angela brought together a group of unmarried women who went out into the streets to gather up the girls they saw to teach them and offer religious instruction in their homes. These women had little money, but were bound together by their dedication to education and commitment to serving Jesus Christ. She would remind her group that they had a greater need to serve the poor than the poor had of their service. She embraced a prayerful and simple lifestyle. Angela’s group was so successful that Angela was asked to bring her innovative approach to educating young women to other cities. Her ministry impressed many, and was brought to the attention of Pope Clement VII. In 1535, Angela Merici chose twelve young women and formally started the Company of Saint Ursula in a small house in Brescia. Although it was never a recognized religious order in her lifetime, Angela’s Company of Saint Ursula, or the Ursuline nuns, was the first group of women religious to work outside of a cloister and the first teaching order of women. Among some of the last pieces of advice she gave her fellow sisters was a stewardship message: that they should do in life what they would have wanted to do in death. She died on 27 January 1540 at seventy years of age. Her feast day is January 27.

What is Natural Family Planning? Natural Family Planning (NFP) is an umbrella term for certain methods used to achieve and postpone pregnancies. NFP can also be used as a tool to evaluate women’s gynecological/reproductive health. These methods, also called Fertility Appreciation or Fertility Awareness methods, are based on the observation of naturally occurring signs of the fertile phase of a woman’s fertility cycle. Couples using NFP to achieve pregnancy en-gage in intercourse during the woman’s fertile phase. Couples wishing to postpone pregnancy simply abstain from genital contact during the time of fertility. No drugs, devices or surgical procedures are used in the practice of NFP. NFP reflects the dignity of the human person within the context of marriage and family life, promotes openness to life, and recognizes the value of every child. By respecting the love-giving and life-giving natures of marriage, NFP enriches the bond between husband and wife. Mickey Bachman, RN, CFCP will be offering Introductory Sessions for the Creighton Method of NFP at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton. The next class will be held March 19 at 6:30 pm in Room 2 of the Church. For information on class dates and times or to register call 702-232-6675.
