Lighting of the Candles

Processional Hymn 400 “All creatures of our God and King” Lasst uns erfreuen

1. All creatures of our God and King, lift up your voices, let us sing:

Alleluia, Alleluia!

Bright burning sun with golden beams, pale silver moon that gently gleams,

O praise him, O praise him Alleluia, Alleluia, Alluluia!

2. Great rushing winds and breezes soft, you clouds that ride the heaven aloft,

O praise him, Alleluia!

Fair rising morn, with praise rejoice, stars nightly shining, find a voice.

O praise him, O praise him Alleluia, Alleluia, Alluluia!

3. Swift flowing water, pure and clear, make music for your Lord to hear,

Alleluia, Alleluia!

Fire, so intense and fiercely bright, you give to us both warmth and light,

O praise him, O praise him Alleluia, Alleluia, Alluluia!

4. Dear mother earth, you day by day unfold your blessings on our way,

O praise him, Alleluia!

All flowers and fruits that in you grow, let them his glory also show:

O praise him, O praise him Alleluia, Alleluia, Alluluia!

A Litany from The Book of Worship for United States Forces (1974)

Leader: Let us give thanks to God for the land of our birth with all its chartered liberties.

For all the wonder of our country's story:

People: We give you thanks, O God.

Leader: For leaders in nation and state, and for those who in days past and in these

present times have labored for the commonwealth:

People: We give you thanks, O God.

Leader: For those who in all times and places have been true and brave, and in the

worlds common ways have lived upright lives and ministered to their fellows:

People: We give you thanks, O God.

Leader: For those who served their country in its hour of need, and especially for those

who gave even their lives in that service:

People: We give you thank, O God.

Leader: O almighty God and most merciful Father, as we remember these your servants,

remembering with gratitude their courage and strength, we hold before you

those who mourn them. Look upon your bereaved servants with your mercy.

As this day brings them memories of those they have lost awhile, may it also

bring your consolation and the assurance that their loved ones are alive now and

forever in your living presence.

The Collect of the Day

Celebrant: The Lord be with you.

People: And also with you.

Celebrant: Let us pray.

O God, the King of glory, you have exalted your only Son Jesus Christ with great

triumph to your kingdom in heaven: Do not leave us comfortless, but send us your Holy

Spirit to strengthen us, and exalt us to that place where our Savior Christ has gone before;

who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, in glory everlasting. Amen.

The First Reading Acts 1:6-14

6 So when they had come together, they asked him, ‘Lord, is this the time when you will

restore the kingdom to Israel?’ 7He replied, ‘It is not for you to know the times or periods

that the Father has set by his own authority. 8But you will receive power when the Holy

Spirit has come upon you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, in all Judea and

Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.’ 9When he had said this, as they were watching, he

was lifted up, and a cloud took him out of their sight. 10While he was going and they were

gazing up towards heaven, suddenly two men in white robes stood by them. 11They said,

‘Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking up towards heaven? This Jesus, who has been

taken up from you into heaven, will come in the same way as you saw him go into

heaven.’

12 Then they returned to Jerusalem from the mount called Olivet, which is near Jerusalem,

a sabbath day’s journey away. 13When they had entered the city, they went to the room

upstairs where they were staying, Peter, and John, and James, and Andrew, Philip and

Thomas, Bartholomew and Matthew, James son of Alphaeus, and Simon the Zealot, and

Judas son of James. 14All these were constantly devoting themselves to prayer, together

with certain women, including Mary the mother of Jesus, as well as his brothers.

Reader: The Word of the Lord.

People: Thanks be to God.

Psalm 68:1-10, 33-36 Congregation reads at asterisk.

1 Let God arise, and let his enemies be scattered; *

let those who hate him flee before him. 2 Let them vanish like smoke when the wind drives it away; *

as the wax melts at the fire, so let the wicked perish at the presence of God. 3 But let the righteous be glad and rejoice before God; *

let them also be merry and joyful. 4 Sing to God, sing praises to his Name; exalt him who rides upon the heavens; *

YAHWEH is his Name, rejoice before him! 5 Father of orphans, defender of widows, *

God in his holy habitation! 6 God gives the solitary a home and brings forth prisoners into freedom; *

but the rebels shall live in dry places. 7 O God, when you went forth before your people, *

when you marched through the wilderness, 8 The earth shook, and the skies poured down rain,

at the presence of God, the God of Sinai, *

at the presence of God, the God of Israel. 9 You sent a gracious rain, O God, upon your inheritance; *

you refreshed the land when it was weary. 10 Your people found their home in it; *

in your goodness, O God, you have made provision for the poor. 33 Sing to God, O kingdoms of the earth; *

sing praises to the Lord. 34 He rides in the heavens, the ancient heavens; *

he sends forth his voice, his mighty voice. 35 Ascribe power to God; *

his majesty is over Israel; his strength is in the skies. 36 How wonderful is God in his holy places! *

the God of Israel giving strength and power to his people!

Blessed be God!

The Second Reading 1 Peter 4:12-14, 5:6-11

12 Beloved, do not be surprised at the fiery ordeal that is taking place among you to test

you, as though something strange were happening to you. 13But rejoice in so far as you

are sharing Christ’s sufferings, so that you may also be glad and shout for joy when his

glory is revealed. 14If you are reviled for the name of Christ, you are blessed, because the

spirit of glory, which is the Spirit of God, is resting on you.

6 Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, so that he may exalt you in

due time. 7Cast all your anxiety on him, because he cares for you. 8Discipline yourselves;

keep alert. Like a roaring lion your adversary the devil prowls around, looking for

someone to devour. 9Resist him, steadfast in your faith, for you know that your brothers

and sisters throughout the world are undergoing the same kinds of suffering. 10And after

you have suffered for a little while, the God of all grace, who has called you to his eternal

glory in Christ, will himself restore, support, strengthen, and establish you. 11To him be

the power for ever and ever. Amen.

Reader: The Word of the Lord.

People: Thanks be to God.

The Anthem “There Is a Higher Throne” Keith and Kristyn Getty

Kelly Sheeks, soloist

There is a higher throne than all this world has known,

where faithful ones from every tongue will one day come.

Before the Son we’ll stand, made faultless through the Lamb.

Believing hearts find promised grace; salvation comes.

Page 6: Welcome to Saint Francis by the Sea...2020/05/24  · the world existed. 6 ‘I have made your name known to those whom you gave me from the world. They were yours, and you gave them

6

Hear heaven’s voices sing! Their thund’rous anthem rings

through emerald courts and sapphire skies; their praises rise.

All glory, wisdom pow’r, strength, thanks and honor are to

God, our King, who reigns on high forever more.

And there we’ll find our home; our life before the throne.

We’ll honor him in perfect song where we belong.

He’ll wipe each tearstained eye as thirst and hunger die.

The Lamb becomes our Shepherd King; we’ll reign with him.

Hear heaven’s voices sing! Their thund’rous anthem rings

through emerald courts and sapphire skies; their praises rise.

All glory, wisdom pow’r, strength, thanks and honor are to

God, our King, who reigns on high forever more.

All glory to God, our King forever more.

The Holy Gospel John 17:1-11

Celebrant: The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John.

People: Glory to you, Lord Christ.

1After Jesus had spoken these words, he looked up to heaven and said, ‘Father, the hour

has come; glorify your Son so that the Son may glorify you, 2since you have given him

authority over all people, to give eternal life to all whom you have given him. 3And this is

eternal life, that they may know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have

sent. 4I glorified you on earth by finishing the work that you gave me to do. 5So now,

Father, glorify me in your own presence with the glory that I had in your presence before

the world existed.

6 ‘I have made your name known to those whom you gave me from the world. They were

yours, and you gave them to me, and they have kept your word. 7Now they know that

everything you have given me is from you; 8for the words that you gave to me I have

given to them, and they have received them and know in truth that I came from you; and

they have believed that you sent me. 9I am asking on their behalf; I am not asking on

behalf of the world, but on behalf of those whom you gave me, because they are

yours. 10All mine are yours, and yours are mine; and I have been glorified in them. 11And

now I am no longer in the world, but they are in the world, and I am coming to you. Holy

Father, protect them in your name that you have given me, so that they may be one, as we

are one.

Leader: The Holy Gospel of our Lord, Jesus Christ according to John.

The Sermon The Rev. Everett Thomas, Ph.D.

The Nicene Creed (All stand)

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that

is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only son of God, eternally begotten of the

Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made,

of one Being with the Father.

Through him all things were made.

For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit

he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man.

For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried.

On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven

and is seated at the right hand of the Father.

He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have

no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father

and the Son.

With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified.

He has spoken through the Prophets.

We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church.

We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.

We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

The Prayers of the People The Leader and People pray responsively.

Alleluia! What was dead shall live; what was dark shall shine; what was forgotten shall

be remembered, for the Lord is risen and walks among us. Let us confidently bring before

God the needs of all our world, asking God for renewal saying, Christ is risen indeed.

God of life, in gratitude and great joy we laud you for the gifts of Christ’s resurrection.

On this day give us hope, for Christ is risen:

Christ is risen indeed.

On this feast day which belongs to all Christian believers, may we commit ourselves to

work toward the unity of the church, that Christ’s body may be one, for Christ is risen:

Christ is risen indeed.

Honoring the gift of Christ’s risen body, may we rise to serve all those whose needs keep

them from seeing themselves as the image of God; for Christ is risen:

Christ is risen indeed.

Page 8: Welcome to Saint Francis by the Sea...2020/05/24  · the world existed. 6 ‘I have made your name known to those whom you gave me from the world. They were yours, and you gave them

8

For all who have need of the gift of Easter; for all who journey from illness to health,

from despair to hope, from grief to consolation, from loneliness to love; for all our

brothers and sisters, that death may have no more power over us, for Christ is risen:

Christ is risen indeed.

For all who suffer and all who mourn, that today the Lord God will wipe away all tears,

for Christ is risen:

Christ is risen indeed.

May we have persistent faith of Mary Magdalene and the surprised belief of Peter and

John. May we long to be God’s sign of life in our world, for Christ is risen:

Christ is risen indeed.

Silence; the people may add their own petitions.

May we be one in faith with all who have died in Christ, for our life is hid with Christ in

God; for Christ is risen:

Christ is risen indeed.

In the Diocesan Cycle of Prayer, we pray for Holy Trinity Church, Hampstead, with the

Rev’d Ron Abrams, Priest in Charge, and the Trinity Center Staff, Penn Perry, Executive

Director. In the Ecumenical Cycle of Prayer, we give thanks for the First Free Will

Baptist Church, Beaufort and First Free Will Baptist Church, Morehead City.

We thank you, Lord, for all the blessings of this life, especially [today’s petitions].

We will exalt you, O God our King;

and praise your Name for ever and ever.

The Celebrant concludes with this collect:

God of life, we thank you for the mystery planted in us, the paradox of life from death

and community from scattered disciples. We praise you for the dying which saves us

from death and for the rising which brings us life. We pray, as we live, through Jesus the

risen one, in the power of the Holy Spirit, now and forever. Amen.

The Doxology Old 100th

Praise God, from whom all blessings flow, Praise Him, all creatures here below;

Praise Him above ye heavenly host; Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen

The Holy Communion

The Eucharistic Prayer

Page 9: Welcome to Saint Francis by the Sea...2020/05/24  · the world existed. 6 ‘I have made your name known to those whom you gave me from the world. They were yours, and you gave them

9

The Celebrant continues:

It is truly right, and good and joyful, to give you thanks, all-holy God, source of life and

fountain of mercy. You have filled us and all creation with your blessing and fed us with

your constant love; you have redeemed us in Jesus Christ and knit us into one body.

Through your Spirit you replenish us and call us to fullness of life. Therefore, with

Angels and Archangels and with the faithful of every generation, we lift our voices with

all creation as we sing:

Sanctus S129 “Holy, Holy, Holy Lord” Robert Powell

Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might,

heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest.

Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest.

The Celebrant proceeds:

We give thanks to you, O God, for the goodness and love which you have made known to

us in creation; in the calling of Israel to be your people; in your Word spoken through the

prophets; and above all in the Word made flesh, Jesus, your Son. For in these last days

you sent him to be incarnate from the Virgin Mary, to be the Savior and Redeemer of the

world. In him, you have delivered us from evil, and made us worthy to stand before you.

In him, who have brought us out of error into truth, out of sin into righteousness, out of

death into life.

On the night before he died for us, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had

given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, “Take eat: This is

my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.”

After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them

and said, “Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed

for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink this, do this for the

remembrance of me.” Therefore, according to his command, O Father,

Page 10: Welcome to Saint Francis by the Sea...2020/05/24  · the world existed. 6 ‘I have made your name known to those whom you gave me from the world. They were yours, and you gave them

Celebrant and People

We remember his death, We proclaim his resurrection, We await his coming in glory.

The Celebrant continues:

And we offer our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving to you, O Lord of all; presenting to

you, from your creation, this bread and this wine.

We pray you, gracious God, to send your Holy Spirit upon these gifts that they may be

the Sacrament of the Body of Christ and his Blood of the new Covenant. Unite us to

your Son in his sacrifice, that we may be acceptable through him, being sanctified by the

Holy Spirit. In the fullness of time, put all things in subjection under your Christ, and

bring us to that heavenly country where, with St. Francis, St. Clare, and all your saints,

we may enter the everlasting heritage of your sons and daughters; through Jesus Christ

our Lord, the firstborn of all creation, the head of the Church, and the author of our

salvation.

By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is

yours, Almighty Father, now and for ever. Amen.

Celebrant continues: As our Savior Christ, has taught us, we now pray, People:

Our father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name,

thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread.

And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us.

And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever and ever. Amen.

Breaking of the Bread (a period of silence is kept)

Fraction Anthem S169 “My flesh is food indeed” Ray Urwin

Cantor: My flesh is food indeed, and my blood is drink indeed, says the Lord.

All: My flesh is food indeed, and my blood is drink indeed, says the Lord.

Cantor: Those who eat my flesh and drink my blood dwell in me, and I in them.

All: My flesh is food indeed, and my blood is drink indeed, says the Lord.

The Celebrant says:

The Gifts of God for the People of God. Take them in remembrance that Christ died for

you, and feed on him in your hearts by faith, with thanksgiving.

After Communion, the Celebrant says: All stand.

The Celebrant and the People say:

Almighty and everliving God, we thank you for feeding us with the spiritual food of the

most precious Body and Blood of your Son our Savior Jesus Christ; and for assuring us in

Page 11: Welcome to Saint Francis by the Sea...2020/05/24  · the world existed. 6 ‘I have made your name known to those whom you gave me from the world. They were yours, and you gave them

these holy mysteries that we are living members of the Body of your Son, and heirs of

your eternal kingdom.

And now, Father, send us out to do the work you have given us to do, to love and serve

you as faithful witnesses of Christ our Lord. To him, to you, and to the Holy Spirit, be

honor and glory, now and for ever. Amen.

Blessing of the Prayer Shawls

The Blessing

The Recessional “Prayer of St. Francis” Sebastian Temple

Make me a channel of your peace.

Where there is hatred; let me bring your love,

Where there is injury, your pardon, Lord,

And where there’s doubt, true faith in you.

Make me a channel of your peace.

Where there’s despair in life, let me bring hope,

Where there is darkness only light,

And where there’s sadness ever joy.

Oh, Master, grant that I may never seek

So much to be consoled as to console,

To be understood as to understand,

To be loved, as to love, with all my soul.

Make me a channel of your peace.

It is in pardoning that we are pardoned,

In giving of ourselves that we receive,

And in dying that we’re born to eternal life.

The Dismissal

Celebrant: Let us go forth into the world, rejoicing in the power of the spirit.

Alleluia, Alleluia , Alleluia!

People: Thanks be to God.

Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia!
