YOU NOT IN THIS ALONE!IN FACT, YOU CAN’T DO IT ALONE !

By Heart of America CouncilHere are some tips for getting parent support:

Let parents know you expect everyone to helpin some way.

Be Specific-Describe what needs to be done and the timeit will take.

Match needs to interests-Use a survey form to find outinterests among parents of boys in the Pack

Continue to ask-If you get turned down, respond with,“Well, I’ll call you again next time.”

Be sensitive -to differences in families. Do both parentswork? Is it a single-parent home? Are theresmall children? This could make a differencein the job you ask them to do.

Keep parents informed-Invite parents to participate inPack activities and events. Send home

Scouting is doing --doing what boys enjoydoing; doing things that bring back memoriesof childhood experiences; doing things thathelp boys grow into men and good citizens;doing things to help a boy find himself.

Scouting is an opportunity for boys to becomeacquainted with the outdoors; an opportunityto participate in adventures that will have aprofound effect on his life; an opportunity tohelp bring a by and his parents to a betterunderstanding of each other.

Scouting is a challenge – a challenge to pointyoung boys down the trail toward being a goodcitizen; a challenge to counteract theundesirable influences that tempt today’syouth; a challenge to leave our county incompetent hands in the future.

Scouting is building the character of a boy;helping him --his childhood to enjoy; directing himup the path to manhood; doing what we trust willbe but good.

Scouting is twelve pairs of legs and armsconstantly moving, Growing boys learningresponsibility and the art of loving, Working boyslearning skills that will be valuable to their future.

Scouting is watching boys turning into young menAnd knowing I have helped just a little in formingthis young man.

Scouting is boys learning, a project that is fun.Scouting is a picnic fire burning, food to eat and arace to run.

By CS Program Helps 1976-77You might want to do a Kite Derby in a fewmonths. Now is the time to get organized. Youneed:Arrangements-- secure a site and makearrangements to use it with the proper authorities;have a rain date just in case.Program – plan and conduct the competition andobtain prizes.Publicity – Make use that every family is informedabout the event and sees a copy of the rules. Besure to invite the Webelos den to compete.Picnic – plan the picnic supper, if desired.

Suggested Kite Derby rules:Fathers and sons work together on kites. Sonswill fly them in completion, but fathers may be“starters” to help get kites into the air.A cub Scout may enter more than one kite. Nokite will be eligible for a prize unless it flies.Kites my be of any size and design but may nothave more than 100 yards of string. All Cub scouts and fathers agree to abide by thee“Nevers” in making, testing and competing withtheir kites:

Rain Gauge

Anemometers

By CS Program Helps 1986-87

One type of rain gauge is shown in Bear Elective2. Here is another, which can be hung from a postin the yard. The hanger is a popsicle stick with ahole near the top for hanging on a nail. The stickis glued with a waterproof glue like airplanemodel cement to a plastic, wide-mouth medicinebottle two inches in diameter and two and threeinches high. Quarter-inch scale is drawn on thebottle with a fine-tip, black, permanent Sharpiemarker.

Devices for measuring velocity of the wind. Theone shown here won’t give a measurement but issimple enough that your boys can make it. Use apaper plate and paper cups with handles. Drive asmall nail into the end of a stick and punchthrough center of plate so plate turns freely. TheSlingshot-like anemometer will give a reading butwill require an adults’s help to make. Cut partsfrom wood and tin as shown. To set the scale onthe instrument, hold it outside a car window on awindless day. With the car going a steady fivemiles an hour, mark the degree of the blade’sswing on the scale. Increase car speed to 10m.p.h. And mark. Repeat at five m.p.h. Intervals. If the blade swings to its top limit at low speeds, weight with lead sinkers and start over.

For this whole month, the boys havebeen working with the theme of WeatherObservations. Our weather is caused by threethings playing together: the air, the sun and themovement of the earth. These three elementscause our seasons to change, just as the CubScout program creates change within our boys.(Call forward Bobcat and parents.) The season offall is much like our Bobcat, who is entering thefamily of Cub Scouting. He will marvel at all thedifferent and colorful leaves of fall. The Bobcatcan be overwhelmed with all the new activities onwhich he can begin. Congratulations on yourbeginning in the Cub Scouting program.(Call forward Wolf and parents.) The next seasonis Winter. In the Wintertime, the Wolf stalks hisprey while the Cub Scout stalks each of therequirements to achieve his rank of Wolf.Congratulations on your achievements.(Call forward Bear and parents.) Spring is whenthe Bear emerges from his hibernation to all thenewness this season brings. Our Cub Scout alsoopens his eyes to survey the requirements for hisrank. This is truly a time of discovery for the BearScout. Congratulations on a job well done.(Call forward Webelos and parents.) Summertimeis the time of outdoor fun. This is what ourWebelos are ready for. He has learned new skillsand now he can test what he has learned. Hisknowledge comes from having experienced allthe other seasons. Congratulations on yourWebelos rank and continue to explore asyou pass through the seasons.

A balloon for each player2 ping pong ballsDivide Cub Scouts into 2 or more teams. Eachplayer is given a balloon which he blows up andholds by the neck until his turn. A raceway isdefined for each team and a ping pong ballplaced at the beginning of each raceway. Teamplayers take turns letting air escape from theirballoons blowing their team’s ball down theraceway. The winner is the team that blows theping pong ball the furthermost way down theraceway.

NoneMust be played on a sunny day. One playeris chosen to be It. The object of the game is forthe person who is It to try and tag another playerby stepping on his or her shadow. Defineboundaries. No fair running into the shade! Whenthe person who is It steps on someone’s shadow,he or she shouts “Sun Tag!” The player whoseshadow was tagged becomes the next person tobe It, but that player must stand still for threecounts before chasing shadows.

NoneDivide the group into two teams. Both teams lineup side by side in the middle of the playgroundfacing the caller. Teams arrange themselves in aspecific order, such as by height, age, first letterof first name, and so forth The caller shouts thename of an object or thing found in the play areasuch as a tree or a fence. Players then breakranks, touch the objects named, and reassemblerapidly in exactly the same order. Since this is agame of instant discovery, callers should addtheir own creative touches and name the thingsthat are not usually noticed, for example:• Touch a tiny twig• Touch the knot in a tree• Touch a crack in the sidewalk• Touch the corner of the building

The team reassembling first most often after apredetermined number of calls is the winner andshould touch off a round of cheers.

Have callers call out the namesof two, three, or four things.

2 pie tins2 spatulas2 large bags of cotton ballsDivide boys into two teams. Give each team a pietin, spatula, and a large bag of cotton balls. Eachteam empties a bag at its feet and places pie tinabout 10 feet away. On signal, the first player oneach team scoops up as many cotton balls as thespatula will hold, carries them to the pie tin, anddrops them in. He then hands the spatula tosecond player, and so on. Hands may not touchthe cotton balls. First team with all cotton balls inits pie tin is the winner.

CompassUse a compass to establish the four maindirections in a room. Have all boys stand facingone player who is the “wind.” The wind tells thedirection he is blowing by saying, “The windblows.., south.” All players must face south. If aplayer is already facing that direction and moves,he is out. The wind may confuse the game byfacing any direction he wishes. Players turningthe wrong direction are out. The winner is the lastplayer still in the game.

Everyone stands in a circle. The leader starts byrubbing his/her hands together. The boy to theright of the leader joins in, then the next boy tothe right, then the next, until everyone is doing it.This sound is much like the sound of a soft sprayof rain. The leader then starts a new soundfinger snapping. The rain is intensifying. Each boy must continueto rub hands until it is his turn to snap fingers. When the finger snapping has gone around thecircle, the leader begins the next soundhands slapping thighs. Finally, the center of therainstorm hands slapping thighs plus footstomping. To end the rainstorm, completelyreverse the activities. The last sound to bepassed is the silence as each boy, one by onestops rubbing hands.

DIP, DRIP AND DUMP

SHOOTING STARS

(outside game)Need bucket of water, two or more plastic cups, two or more containers with small neck (popbottles). Before the race, put two and three small

holes in the bottom of the cups use pencilor nail). Divide the players into two or moregroups. The object is for first member of eachgroup to dip the cup into the bucket of water, thenrun to the empty container, dump any remainingwater into the container, then return the cup tothe next person in his group. The continuesuntil the container is full or its filled to someappropriate level. To make the running distanceshorter, you can make the holes bigger.

Stand all boys in a line and give each aconstruction paper star and half a straw. Eachboy places his star on the floor in front of him. When the signal is given, each boy must lift upthe star by inhaling on the straw and then walk tothe finish line. The boys must not touch the starsat all but may touch the straws. If a star drops, the boy must lift it up with the straw only andcontinue.

WEATHER OBSERVER

BALMY BREEZES

You will need pencil and paper for each scout. The leader gives a 3-4 minute fictitious weatherreport full of lots of weather activity. While tellingthe story, he does several things such asmopping his brow, buttoning his shirt, scratchinghis ankle, etc. At the end of the forecast, eachboy is asked to write down NOT what theforecaster said, but what he did during the reportand in the order that he did them. (Anothervariation would be for them to write all thedifferent types of weather conditions mentionedand in order.)

Seat the Scouts around a table small enoughthey will be close together. Put a ping-pong ball inthe center of the table. On signal, Scouts withtheir chins on the table and their hands behindthem try to blow the ball off the table betweentwo of the other players. A boy scores a pointevery time he manages to blow the ball off thetable. This could also be done as a teamcompetition with one team at each end of thetable.

Every Cub Scout should accomplish somethingworthwhile every day. Each day’s accomplishmentsshould be a little better than the last. Stand by awindow with your room dark and look out intothe night. Ask yourself the simple question: Have Idone my best today? Then each day, vow to dobetter than the day before. If all of us did that, thenkept our promises, we’d have the best Cub Scoutpack in the city. Now, as we close tonight, I want toask you this question answer it silently toyourself. Have you done your best today?

Pulleys can be used to either change thedirection of effort or to reduce the effort requiredto lift a load. A pulley that doesn’t move onlychange direction of force (ex. 1),but if a pulleydoes move, it can reduce the amount of forcerequired (ex.2). The price you always pay forreducing force with a pulley is how far you haveto pull. If you use a single moveable pulley to lift10 pounds 10 feet you only have to pull with 5pounds of force but you have to pull 20 feet ofrope. If you used enough pulleys to reduce theforce to 1 pound, you would have to pull 100 feetof rope.

Roll the paper onto thepencil from one short side of the triangle to theopposite point. Keep the bottom or baseline, of thetriangle even as it rolls. 2.The colored edge, marking the ramp, will spiral up the pencil formingthe pattern of a screw.
