The Epiphany of the Lord Epiphany, is to enter into the wonder of God’s revelation. Christ revealed himself to the world in his lifetime. He reveals himself to us today. The Magi with gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh express adoration of the Lord, King of kings. The adoration of these three Gentile wise men fulfills the prophecies made long before, that a Savior would come and would be the light of the nations. A popular cartoonist claims the three kings had no idea what it was like to be a mother with a new born child, otherwise they would have brought something more practical. Wonderment seized the nations with the thought, “Who would send a baby, a tiny child? When the world is crying for the promised one. Who would send his only son? To heal the wounds of a world in pain. The “revelation,” the epiphany is that the divine way is not necessarily the well worn way of common, practical sense of ordinary expectation. The feast is to be absorbed in the mystery of a God who knows better than we know what gift we need. A we know, the Magi find the baby with his mother, Mary, they worship, and offer their gifts. Though it might have been better if the gifts were just right, giving is the point— We are at our best when we are like God whose nature is to give. The event of the Magi is but the first epiphany, manifestation of the glory of Christ. The Mass, today is an epiphany, Christ is present here, now. He is present in the word proclaimed in the mystery of the Eucharist, in common bread and wine. When the sacred elements are raised high, Christ’s spirit is revealed in each of us. We bow before our mighty King of kings, Lord of lords. Our Amen should sound forth our allegiance, our faith. Amen.

- Deacon Guy

From the Pastor’s Desk… Today we celebrate the feast of the Epiphany which is often called the feast of

the Three Kings. It is an essential part of the celebration of the mystery of the Incarnation and manifestation of the

Christ: who He is and why He became human. In the stable of Bethlehem the shepherds experienced a

manifestation of someone special for the people of Israel. For the Magi from the East, representing the whole of the

Gentile world, Jesus was seen as a special person for the entire human race to search for, someone who is truly

Catholic, truly for all regardless of race, people or country of origin!

I am most happy to announce once again and congratulate St. Raymond parish for doing the utmost not

only for our parish but also for the broader aspects of the work of the Catholic church on Long Island funded by the

CATHOLIC MINISTRIES APPEAL. Part of the mystery of the Epiphany is to see that the work of the church touches

as many aspects of the lives of our parishioners and our neighbors in Nassau and Suffolk counties and beyond.

Particularly commendable were the number of parishioners who made substantial sacrifices by way of the last

minute effort to put us at goal so that St. Raymond’s parish could benefit from their sacrifice. God Bless you and love

you. I believe that the last minute sacrifices were due to the pressing monetary need presented by the $15,000

to repair the north (St. Joseph) transept roof that began leaking in the middle of December and continues to do

extensive damage. Also to provide for the safety and peace of mind of our Sisters threatened by the perils of an

outdated electrical system in the Convent, in appreciation for all they do on behalf of our children. Our gift to alleviate

their apprehensions will cost over $14,000.

A Polish custom, which was a part of my growing up and priesthood, is the blessing of homes on the feast

of the Epiphany. I share it with you. Perhaps you may want to make it part of your family traditions and add a

dimension to making your house a Catholic home and family:

+ + + +

Leader: In the (+) name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Let the Light of the world shine on this place!

Legend gives these names to the Lord’s visitors Casper, Melchior, and Balthasar.

Their initials sign this doorway, along with 4 crosses and the numerals of the new year.

20 + C + M + B + 10

(With chalk the above inscription is written over the front doorway of the house for all to see during

the year and be reminded: This is a house where followers of Jesus live. The C+M+B also stand for the

first letter of the house blessing as written in Latin)

Leader: Let us pray: Christus Mansionem Benedicat.

May Christ bless this house!

May Christ bless us all, now and forever.

All: Amen.

A Blessed Christmas and New Year to you all!

A Prayer for Priests and Priestly Vocations

Heavenly Father, please grant to Your faithful servants, the grace and strength to carry out

Your mission for the church each day. Keep our priests close to You and continue to inspire them to serve others in Your Holy Name. Please help to inspire men who are called to a priestly vocation

STEWARDSHIP THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK

The three kings in today’s Gospel traveled a great distance at considerable cost to offer their riches gifts to the Infant Jesus. How far will I go and what will I offer to do homage to this newborn King and Savior?

THIS WEEK’S TIME & TALENT SALUTE:

The skill and the dedication of our ushers who demonstrate remarkable skill and finesse in orchestrating the logistics needed for the liturgy and crowd control, particularly in the holiday situations with many guests and congregants whose main objective often does not coincide with the objective of church decorum and reverence needed for prayer and atmosphere of respect. In addition, to the many skills, talents and time given by our church decorators who make our church so beautiful and reflective of the dignity of the season and the awesomeness of the feast day celebration.

LIVING STEWARDSHIP

Please consider remembering St. Raymond’s Parish in your will. Catholics of generations to come will thank you for your thoughtfulness and remember you in their prayers. Sacrificial Giving____________________________ GOD’S PLAN FOR GIVING Last Week $20,619 Last Year $17,460

Principal’s Corner

Does it sound very strange to you when you hear the year 2010? Seems rather unreal to me, yet here we are beginning another new year. It’s the time for resolutions and new resolves. May we all keep them reasonable and practical.

School reopens this Monday at the regular time. We should get right back into the swing of things with the exception of lunches. Since we were on “vacation” last week, there will not be deli sandwiches or soup this coming week. Here’s a look at the week ahead:

• Monday – Baked ziti at lunch; Math Enrichment after school

• Tuesday – Junior Sodality (Primary at lunchtime; 4-8 after school); Spirit Team game at St. William’s at 3:30 and 4:45 PM

• Wednesday – Band lessons; Hot dog day; Math Enrichment and Chorus after school

• Thursday – Hot pretzels at lunch; Home Spirit Team game with St. Agnes at 3:30 and 4:45 PM

• Friday – Bagel day

Reservations for the Defensive Driving Course are being accepted at the school’s main office now. Call to reserve your spot for the course being offered on Saturday, January 9th. The cost is $50 with checks payable to St. Raymond School. Taking the course not only removes points from your license and saves you money on your insurance, but helps the school as well. Thanks for considering taking the course here at St. Raymond’s. Have toddler age children that you would like in a Catholic environment? It would be good to consider St. Raymond’s Early Childhood programs for 3 and 4 year olds. All interested folks are welcome to visit those programs on Friday, January 15th from 9:00 to 11:00 AM. Hearing about the program is one thing; seeing it in action is another! Come visit our Nursery and Pre-K that day. You can call the school for more information. Of course this is also the time that we prepare to welcome any family who may be interested in Catholic education during our celebration of Catholic Schools Week. This year our OPEN HOUSE is scheduled for after the 9:00 AM Mass on Sunday, January 31st.

Religious Education

Religious Education classes (day and evening) will resume Monday, Jan. 4th, 2010. 2nd Grade Parents (Religious Ed & St. Raymond): There will be a 2nd Grade Parent Meeting on Thursday, January 7th, 2010 at 8pm in the St. Raymond School auditorium. The topic of the meeting is the students’ preparation for Reconciliation; therefore, please make every effort to attend.

Faith Formation

The feast of the Epiphany commemorates the kings from the East showing homage to the Christ Child by their presentation of gifts. Now that we all have been “gifted”, let us bring our gifts to our God. Yes we DO have gifts. God gave them to us when He created us. We may not always be aware of our gifts and talents but they are there. Use them. Each one of us was given ”love” -a gift-a virtue. Let us share it with our families, our friends and most of all our God. What a beautiful world we would have if only people could love (wish no harm to) one another! Why don’t we begin to show the world how?

There’s plenty of love at the Ryan House, the home of the Parish Social Ministry. The love of those who are willing to accept help when needed. The love of those who give back when able. The love of those who support our work so abundantly with food, monetary contributions, giving tree, sponsor a family, and baby gifts. The love of those who volunteer in the “heart of the parish.” The love of God—at all times. Do not forget to share your God given gifts-your talents and your blessings. Use them up on earth. You won’t need them later.

Free regular flu shots are available if you haven’t already gotten one. Call 887-9197. Leave your name and phone number. An appointment will be arranged.

Please remember to pray for the members of the United States Military

serving throughout the world.

“Protect them as they protect us. Bless them and their families for the selfless acts they perform for us in our time of need.

I ask this in the name of Jesus, Our Lord and Savior.”

If you would like to have the name of a loved one

serving in the military included in a prayer list in a future bulletin, please call the rectory at 593-5000.

Or send your request via e-mail: [email protected]
