We are proud to present this 2011‐12 Oconomowoc Area School District Annual Report. This report demonstrates our commitment to excellence  in academics, the arts, and athle cs. We are proud to share this commitment with our students, staff, families, and the greater Oconomowoc community. Working together, we will ensure a quality educa on for all students, so they can be produc ve ci zens and be ready for college and careers as they graduate.  Our commitment to that goal is unwavering. 

We must also embrace changes to our  learning environments which will help prepare students for the world  in which they will  live.   Today’s classrooms are vastly different from when most of us sat at desks in neat rows.  Informa on sharing and communica‐on can now take place 24 hours a day, 7 days a week because of technology.  Students 

today move through their learning environments to gather informa on and learn with their peers, some mes even peers across the globe.  It is really an exci ng  me in edu‐ca on as we prepare our students for a world we can only imagine.  More importantly, our students will be the cri cal thinkers, problem solvers, responsible decision‐makers, effec ve  communicators,  and  creators of  the  future.    Success  for  all  students  is our number one priority and passion.

OASD 

The  teachers  and  staff  of  Oconomowoc  Area School District are dedicated,  crea ve and mo ‐vated by  excellence.  They  are  eager  to  take  ad‐vantage of professional development to maximize their  impact; they are willing to engage students by connec ng “real world” with classroom, lever‐aging emerging technology for instruc onal gain. 

Oconomowoc  teachers  and  staff  are  the  driving force behind the success of our students.   

Nature Hill Teacher Receives Kohl Fellowship  

Nature Hill teacher, Michael Krill, recently received a Herb Kohl Educa on‐al Founda on Fellowship. Krill will receive a $1,000 award; Nature Hill will also  received $1,000.   Mr. Krill has been  a  teacher  in  the Oconomowoc Area School District since 2004. 

Each year, the founda on awards 100 Wisconsin teachers for their superi‐or ability to inspire a love of learning in their students, to mo vate others, and for their leadership and service within and outside the classroom.  

The winner of the You Be The Chemist State Challenge was from Oconomowoc. Teacher Tim Bohlman helped prepare students through ac vi es in his Chemistry Club.  

Principal Deanna  Burton  received  the  2012 Black  Excellence  Award  for  Extraordinary Achievement. She noted  in her program bi‐ography,  “Educa on  is a powerful  tool  that can take a person anywhere they wish to go, if they are willing to work hard and strive for excellence.”

In the Oconomowoc Area School District, we rec‐ognize  that many  things  influence  the educa on of our children. One of the most important factors is involvement by our parents and guardians who support the accomplishments of their children.   

There  are many ways  in which  parents  and  ex‐tended  families  demonstrate  that  support,  but the goal  is the same:   to help Oconomowoc area children  have  the  most  meaningful  educa onal experience possible.

The  Oconomowoc  Area  School District surveys a random sample of parents each year as part of its con nuous  improvement  and accountability  cycle.  The  results are  reviewed  by  administrators, principals, and  teachers  to gauge progress  and  set  improvement goals.  

More  than 548 parents  complet‐ed  the 2012 ques onnaire  yield‐ing  a  +4% margin  of  error.    Re‐sults  show  the  percentage  of parents  who  graded  Ocono‐mowoc  Schools  as  “A”  or  “B” remains  significantly  above  the 2005—2007 levels.

Annual Parent Survey 74%  of  respondents  would  allow their OHS  student  to bring  a mobile device  (e.g.,  iPod,  Smartphone,  lap‐top,  etc.)  to  school  for  educa onal purposes.

The Oconomowoc Area School District is commi ed to providing all children the high  quality,  engaging  learning  experiences  necessary  for  success  in  the  21st century.    Our  teachers  are  dedicated,  crea ve  and mo vated  by  excellence. They  are  eager  to  take  advantage  of  professional  development  to maximize their  impact;  they  are willing  to  engage  students  by  connec ng  “real world” with classroom, leveraging emerging technology for instruc onal gain.  

Oconomowoc FLeX Connect offers hybrid and online courses customized to the needs of the learner.  Capitalizing  on  the  promise  of  any‐me,  anywhere  learning,  our  innova ve  staff 

strives to merge challenging, engaging curricu‐lum  with mo va onal  technologies  in  a  per‐sonalized learning environment.  

The  Interna onal  Baccalaureate  (IB)  Diploma  programme  is  a  de‐manding and comprehensive two‐year curriculum  for highly mo vat‐ed juniors and seniors. Students may earn IB Cer ficates or may fulfill a range of requirements and receive an IB Diploma in addi on to their OHS diploma.

OASD  students  have  the  opportunity  to  learn about  and  be  involved  in  an  impressive  array  of arts opportuni es. The curriculum includes art and music  experiences  beginning  in  4K,  con nuing through  to  the  high  school  level where  students can  select  classes  or  clubs  like  jazz  combo,  play produc on or art metals and jewelry, among many other op ons.  Even  at  the  elementary  level,  stu‐dents  in third and fourth grade present their own school musicals.  In  the  intermediate  grades,  stu‐dents perform  their  school musicals on  the  stage of the Oconomowoc Arts Center. Band and orches‐tra  students  are  included  in  high  school  perfor‐mances  and  jazz  band  par cipants  add  their  tal‐ents to district‐wide jazz concerts. 

Special Recognitions Oconomowoc High School Players were again honored with Tommy Awards, this  me for their 

fall 2011 produc on of Urinetown. Garnered awards  included Outstanding Musical, Best Male Lead and Best Female Lead. Wrote one of the judges: “This was a top‐notch high school musical that demonstrated what is possible with high standards, commitment, teamwork and a en on to detail. Oconomowoc High School was victorious!”  

Ten  students  from  Silver  Lake  Intermediate  and Oconomowoc High  School were  showcased during the 6th annual Milwaukee Regional Art Fair. 

The Floren ne Opera Company collaborated with third grade students from Park Lawn Elemen‐tary to perform The Three Li le Pigs at the Oconomowoc Arts Center 

District art teachers collaborated to present the first district‐wide art show, Faces of Art Educa‐on in Oconomowoc. 

The Oconomowoc High School Wind Symphony earned First Place in the Dixie Classic Na onal Music Fes val in Chicago, receiving an overall score of 97.6, and taking overall awards for best band, best percussion and best brass sec ons.  

An apprecia ve audience celebrated  the  return of world‐renowned pianist and Oconomowoc High  School  graduate,  Christopher  Finkelmeyer,    and  his  performance  of  “The  Oz  Fantasy‐Fantasia on Themes from the Wizard of Oz” at the Oconomowoc Arts Center.  

Planned for next year is a reunion of the ~100 Oconomowoc High School alumni musicians who were part of the band program during director Buz Hoefer’s ten‐ure from 1977‐92.

Our Arts Center...

The OAC  serves  the  school district and Lake Country area by crea ng  and promo ng district,  community  and professional cultural events with the mission to entertain and educate.  

2011‐12 Highlights The OAC developed a new annual ar s c partnership with the Milwaukee  Ballet  Company,  which  features  student  perfor‐mances.  

A endance for all OAC events in 2011/12 exceeded 50,000.   A  new  film  series  and  visual  arts  series  were  created  with great public response. Films included were “Race to Nowhere” and “The Red Kite Project.” Visual arts series events  included an All‐District Arts and Cra s event, OHS IB Art show, Milwau‐kee  Youth Art  Fair,  Pewaukee Area Arts  Council’s  Ekphras c event and the Waukesha Crea ve Arts League member show.

Our Athle cs...WLT All‐Sport Champs 2012 The 2011‐12 athle c year witnessed many new events, success in mul ple venues and growth in our goal se ng and  leadership  skills.  Fi y‐eight  coaches  in  20  sports along with four compe ve club sports and one full‐ me trainer helped approximately 500 student/athletes navi‐gate  through the  fall, winter and spring sports seasons.  The Athle c  Purpose  of  the Oconomowoc Area  School District is to: 

Enhance academic experience

Build strong character 

Promote physical, mental and spiritual fitness 

Develop  compe ve  individual  achievement  that fosters team success 

Strengthen school and community pride 

Everyone  involved  with  OHS  Athle cs—from  coaches and  players  to  parents  and  community  members—is  expected  to  support  the  Athle c  Purpose while main‐taining the perspec ve that sports are a part of  life and not life itself. 

The  last piece of  the puzzle  is  the ul mate  success   of the Athle c Fields Forever project. We will con nue  to plan and prepare for this comprehensive outdoor facili‐ty.  This  project  encompasses  soccer,  baseball,  so ball, football,  track  and  field,  lacrosse  and  tennis  for  both boys and girls. The Booster Club and District,  in a part‐nership, have been working towards funding this $3.9 M endeavor  which  will  impact  the  school  community  as well as the surrounding communi es.

Our Alumni... Oconomowoc Area School District alumni proudly  represent the District  locally, na onally and  interna onally. From  their learning experiences, they emerge with determina on, vision and commitment. 

The District’s Wall of Fame recognizes those alums who have taken their founda onal educa on and moved on to make a significant contribu on to the welfare of mankind. 

The Wall  of  Fame  recipient  for  2012  is Ma hew  Nelson,  a 1998 graduate of Oconomowoc High School.    

Nelson used his musical abili es to teach young musicians to play tuba in the High School All‐American Marching Band and has par cipated  in  countless na onal and  interna onal per‐formances  including  events  for  a  former  and  current  Presi‐dent of the United States.  

A Few Other Notable OHS Alumni... Vice Admiral Dirk Debbink, Chief of Navy Reserve and Chief of Staff, U.S. Pacific Fleet,  is a OHS 

alum. 

World renowned jazz composer and arranger, Fred Sturm, graduated from OHS in 1969. 

Craig Schiefelbein, co‐founder and CEO of Paragon Development Systems (PDS) graduated from Oconomowoc High School  in 1982. His company architects, supplies,  implements and manages IT solu ons for many Fortune 500 companies. He is also co‐founder and chairman of the Ocono‐mowoc Area Founda on and is ac ve in a number of civic organiza ons. 

1992 OHS graduate Ma  Rinka is a well‐known and sought‐a er architect. His firm is designing The Couture, a 44‐story building which will replace Milwaukee’s Downtown Transit Center.   

Mac Guckenberger is a recent OHS graduate and University of Wisconsin‐Madison student who dedicates  his  me  to  helping  young  students  achieve  success  in  robo c  compe ons.  He worked with a high‐achieving group of Silver Lake students who excelled in a world compe on; they nominated their adviser, Mac, as Mentor of the Year.

Our Community...

Oconomowoc Who wouldn’t want to  live here?   The con nued growth  in the number of students  in the Oconomowoc Area School District reflects the desire of families to reside in a beau ful and family‐centered community which is lo‐cated almost equidistance between Madison and Milwaukee. Wonderful natural resources including lakes, a uni‐versally accessible playground and hiking trails that stretch from downtown Oconomowoc up through Ixonia are just a few of the a ributes. Housing varies from the newly‐built to the well‐established in this welcoming envi‐ronment. Access to professional arts programming is conveniently located at the Oconomowoc Arts Center; oth‐er events  include  the annual Oconomowoc Fes val of  the Arts Week, Moonlight Movies, concerts  in  the park and art crawls. The community ac vely supports environmental awareness and the protec on of waterways and wetlands.   

The Oconomowoc Area School District is an important element in the appeal of this area. Businesses locate and maintain their presence here because  their employees appreciate the educa onal value of taxes paid vs. high quality results as a part of high quality of  life. Students ac vely work with and support community groups and businesses; during the 2011‐12 school year, the following are just a few of their collabora ons: 

Students enrolled  in  the OHS Building Trades  III course worked with Tim O’Brien Homes  to build a  three‐bedroom, two‐bath 1,678‐sqaure foot ranch‐style house in Ixonia. It was the fi h such home completed by OHS students. 

OHS Future Farmers of America students grew organic plants from seeds which were then transplanted at NuGenesis Farm. The produce was harvested and used by district food service provider, Taher, to enhance healthier lunches for Oconomowoc students. 

Members of  the OHS Advanced Marke ng Class and DECA  raised more  than $6,000 at  their annual Grill‐ing2Give event. Proceeds were divided between the Lake Area Free Clinic and the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Founda on. 

The art of district students was again part of this spring’s gallery night in downtown Oconomowoc.

The  Oconomowoc  Public  Educa on Founda on  was  created  to  offer educa on‐minded  ci zens a way  to support the Oconomowoc area pub‐lic  schools  with  private,  tax‐deduc ble  contribu ons.    Through various  collabora ve projects, OPEF seeks  to  encourage  leadership,  fos‐ter excellence, and nurture  commu‐nity  in  the  Oconomowoc  public schools.   

OPEF presented a record $86,795 in grant awards for the 2012‐2013 school year! 

The Oconomowoc Public Educa on Founda on  (OPEF), a non‐profit  founda on  that supports  innova ve educa onal opportuni es  in  the Oconomowoc Area School District  (OASD), presented a  record $86,795  in grant awards  for  the 2012‐2013 school year at the May 15 OASD board of educa on mee ng. 

This represents a 70 percent increase over the total amount the founda on awarded last year. In just four years since it began awarding grants  in 2009, OPEF has contributed more than $169,000 to support educa onal enhancements not covered by the taxpayer‐funded OASD budget. “We are thrilled to be able to contribute $80,755 in educa onal grants and more than $6,000 for drug and alcohol awareness educa on through the Jennifer Bukosky Fund,” said Maribeth Bush, OPEF Grants Commi ee Chair. “We couldn’t have raised this money without literally hundreds of volunteers and donors from our area communi es, including teachers and corporate sponsors who helped make our Haunted High and Haunted Ball fundraisers successful. OPEF  is proud to offer a way for supporters of educa on to make tax deduc ble contribu ons that will help con nue Oconomowoc’s long tradi on of educa onal excellence.” 

The seven educa onal grants awarded this year from the OPEF General Fund, and two grants from the Jennifer Bukosky Fund, have the poten al to impact students at all grade levels and schools, and to touch all public school families in the district. Grant  recipients were  selected  from 31 different grant applica ons,  reques ng more  than $341,000, which OPEF received from OASD staff members this year. Applica ons were reviewed by the OPEF Grants Commi ee and ap‐proved by  the OPEF board of directors. Selec ons were made based on key criteria  including  the  impact on a  large number of students, crea vity and long‐term impact on curriculum, and alignment with the OPEF mission of encourag‐ing leadership, fostering excellence and nurturing a sense of belonging in the public schools.
