You then go to your allocated room and put your bag on a bed. When told to do so, you go

downstairs to meet up with the rest of your group in the Common Room.

In the Common Room, you will meet some of the Newlands staff who will explain the rules of the centre, what you need to do

and when you need to do it.

They will tell you about the activities, what to wear, where you can and can not go, meal times and lots of other

information.

You will have the chance to ask any questions, then it’s time to start !!

You will then meet the Instructors who will make sure you are ready for your first activity.

We need to make sure that you have eaten something before the first activity as you will be outside burning up lots of energy. So each morning you can have some or all of the following: cereals, toast, jam, sausage, bacon, beans, hash brown, tomato, mushrooms, tea, coffee.

To top up your energy levels you have a choice of sandwiches, a piece of fruit, biscuits, crisps and fruit juice.

Each night you have soup and bread to start your meal with.

Main courses are filling and of good quality. During your stay you might have cottage pie and vegetables, homemade pizza and salads, chicken pie, potatoes and vegetables, Cumberland Sausage and mashed potato.

Deserts are varied and can be along the lines of sponge and custard, apple pie, ice cream or even sticky toffee pudding…….yum !!

Special diets can be catered for if Newlands is notified of them before your arrival.

Newlands is very proud to announce that our kitchen gained 5 stars (the highest score possible)

FOR THE SECOND YEAR RUNNING !! after our environmental health inspection.

Packing: what to bring ~ Packing: what to bring ~

You will need to bring the following items and please remember that you have to carry your bag up a steep flight of stairs on arrival so pack

sensibly.•2 x Towels: one for showering and one for activities

•Wash Bag: soap, shampoo, toothpaste etc

•Nightwear: don’t forget slippers for wearing indoors

•Underwear: bring a few extras as you will get wet on some activities

•Socks: bring plenty as some may get wet

•Swimwear: for under clothes on water activities.

•Trainers: one wet pair and one dry pair

•Waterproof Jacket: Even in summer !!

•Hat and Gloves: again even in summer

•Sunscreen and Sunhat: you may be lucky enough to need them

•Trousers: 1 pair per activity NO JEANS

•T-Shirts: 1 per activity and a couple extra

•Fleecy Jumper / Sweatshirt per day

•Set of clothes for evenings

•Books, teddies, comics etc

•Pocket money

•Disposable waterproof camera

•Small rucksack

•Water bottle

L8133/R0030 and details can be checked on the AALA web site: www.aala.org

• All staff hold National Governing Body Awards in the sports they teach. If there are no such awards, Instructors receive detailed in house training from highly qualified senior staff. All staff are first aid qualified and carry a first aid pack.

• Risk Assessments for the activities can be requested at any time and there is a copy our web site: www.activity-centre.com

• Newlands holds all appropriate and required insurances and is insured by the National Farmers Union. Details can be checked by contacting the NFU Cockermouth branch on 01900 823066

• All transport used has seatbelts and conforms to the latest Department Of Transport requirements and again all appropriate insurances are held.

• All equipment is checked regularly and a log of use is kept. Equipment is also insured.

• The Fire Procedure will be explained in full on arrival but needless to say, if the alarm rings you leave the building sensibly and by the nearest marked exit and you do not return to the building until you are told it is safe to do so.

A round robin of low level challenges designed to get

everyone talking, listening and working together. From diffusing a

bomb to crossing swamps, rounding up sheep to walking on giant skis, it’s a fun way to start your visit.

High Ropes Course and The WoodsHigh Ropes Course and The Woods

Swing and climb through the tree canopy testing your

nerves and achieving heights you thought you would never

reach.

A wonderful way to experience the beauty of the Lake District and you may even visit a deserted island or two !!

Rock ClimbingRock Climbing

Whether on rock or on a wall, you will soon be topping out on your

first climb, with an exciting abseil back down.

Mountain BikingMountain BikingAfter a briefing and a

quick skills test to show your Instructor

you can manage your bike, you will

soon be off exploring the local area on two

wheels.

KayakingKayakingWith your Instructor, explore the Lake

and discover a new and exciting way of travelling. Basic paddle techniques and safety procedures are explained before

getting into the water then after a practice session, head out on your

journey of discovery.

Mountain WalkMountain WalkWith some of the Lake Districts most famous walks on our doorstep, it won’t be long until

you too can appreciate the fantastic views and breathtaking scenery from the top of a local

fell.

Evening ActivitiesEvening Activities

Evening activities are based on site and not

out on the fells or lake.

We have a wide range of both indoor

and outdoor activities to keep everyone busy from after

dinner until 9pm.

Going for Gold !!

Not as easy as it looks but this ancient sport is a popular choice at Newlands and competitions to burst a balloon are fiercely fought !!

OrienteeringOrienteering

After instruction on how to use a map and compass,

you will soon be finding the hidden markers on the

onsite courses.

You may even progress to the offsite courses, using your skills to find points hidden around the valley and all under the watchful

eye of an Instructor.

Booking:Booking:DEPOSITS: these need to be paid as soon as possible to the school so they can then secure their requested dates.

BALANCE: This is due to be received by Newlands 8 weeks before the start of the visit so please make sure your balance is paid in time to go through the school system and so reach Newlands in time.

DETAILS: We need dietary and medical details for each participant so please send them in as soon as the school request them.

CANCELLATIONS: We operate the following procedure for ANY cancellations, medical or otherwise:

•Up to 8 weeks prior to start of the course: deposit only retained.

•5 to 8 weeks prior to the start of the course: 50% of the full amount retained.

•4 to 1 week prior to the start of the course: 75% of the full amount retained.

•Less than 1 weeks notice given: NO REFUND WILL BE GIVEN

Please contact the school if you wish to claim back the amount retained by Newlands as this will need to be done through the

school’s travel insurance which is NOT included in the Newlands price.

A few things to note…A few things to note…DRYING ROOM: We have a very efficient drying room for wet gear. If you have any wet clothing or trainers, the drying room is the place to put it ~ NOT your room !!

THE GROUNDS: You are welcome to explore the grounds BUT YOU MUST NEVER go out without permission from a teacher OR go down to the river without an adult accompanying you. The Woods are out of bounds unless with an Instructor and please go onto the games field to play ball games and not on the back lawn. You should also never climb over a fence as the fence around the centre marks it’s boundary.

SNACKS AND GAMES: There is a cold drinks, a canned drinks, and a chocolate machine in the centre for snacks. Also a baby football table and a pool table, both which take 50p coins.

SOUVENIRS: Newlands hold a small stock of souvenirs with prices ranging from £2.00 to £8.00.
