We work to promote good mental health in our city and across Sussex, helping people
lead a full life as part of their local community.
Spring 2012 Issue 4
Welcome to Mind in Brighton &
Hove
Mind in Brighton & Hove are delighted to be able to announce that they are part of a
successful team to provide Brighton and Hove Primary Care Mental Health Services. This
was a joint bid from ―The Mental Health Partnership‖, made up of seven Brighton and Hove
GP Practices, Brighton and Hove Integrated Care Services, Sussex Partnership NHS
Foundation Trust, Mind in Brighton and Hove, and Turning Point.
Sarah Danily (Director of Mind in Brighton and Hove) says, ―This is a fantastic
achievement. It builds on the experience of each of the partners to design a new range of
services which caught the imagination of the commissioners.‖ We look forward to working
with our new partners in the summer.

LiVE Website Launch
Fundraising
The LiVE project‘s new online home at ww.mindlive.co.uk
is here at last! The website has been designed by a group
of LiVE project members (with a little help from
professionals) and was celebrated with a launch event for
members in December. The public area of the site includes
lots of information about the project as well as current
public surveys, consultations and meetings. The private
members only area provides a space where members can
share information and news, and find out all about current
project work and activities.
We are pleased to announce that we are in the final stages of developing a Lived Experience
Council. This group of interested people with lived experience will be influential in supporting
and advising the work of our Board of Trustees. Anyone who is currently using Mind services
or has done so in the past or accessed other services in the city for people with lived
experience and is interested in supporting the work of Mind can be involved.
So if you are passionate about making a difference and helping Mind in Brighton & Hove to
improve our services please let us know. This is an exciting opportunity to make a real
difference in helping us to put ―service user views‖ at the forefront of everything that we do.
As we are still in the throes of defining our role we will pay you for your involvement and
support in enabling us to create an Advisory group of committed people with Lived
Experience. Travel expenses will also be paid.
So why not get involved and Have a Voice?
I will be supporting the Council until everyone feels comfortable and confident in their role.
So if you are keen to know more please call me, Mike Ashbee, Participation Team Leader on
01273 666966 or if you prefer email me, [email protected] .
We look forward to hearing from you!
We define Lived Experience as anyone who has accessed services i.e. mental health, substance misuse, women’s
services etc.

New Mental Health Focus Groups
Help us to shape
and influence the
work of Mind in
Brighton and
Hove
Following discussions with NHS Brighton and Hove, the quarterly public Gateway
meetings are being replaced by a series of smaller themed focus groups which will be
held throughout the year. These will focus on topics identified as priority issues by both
commissioners and service users. The new format is aimed to ensure better opportunity
to go into sufficient depth about each issue.
The first focus group will take place on 26th
March from 2 – 4 p.m. and will be looking at
proposals for developing a new community service for people with personality
disorders in Brighton and Hove. A voucher payment will be offered to all participants
in recognition of their valuable input.
For details of how to take part, please visit www.mindlive.co.uk/mental-health-focus-
groups/ or contact Mike Ashbee at [email protected]

Afternoon tea: a phrase that conjures up cosy images and happy memories, a tradition we all enjoy and, for our older clients, a reminder of a more relaxed era, when there was time to stop, to take a breather, have a cuppa and a good chat. Earlier this year, Age UK, the Alzheimer‘s society and Mind decided to get together and host two afternoon tea events on the older peoples‘ in-patient wards at the Nevill hospital. We wanted to create a friendly, relaxed atmosphere where people could ask questions, find out what we do, who we are and how to contact us. We decided to take the event onto the wards, as patients in these settings don‘t always have the opportunity to get out and find out what is available for them locally. Also, we hoped to be able to meet up with family, friends and carers who might be visiting their loved one in hospital, as we know that carers often feel isolated and stressed and need access to information and community support as well. Luis Algorta, Age UK Community Development Officer set up the Wii console on the ward TV and he soon had patients trying their hand at ten-pin bowling, base-ball and tennis. The Wii proved very popular and it was interesting to see how competitive people became and, I mean, the staff who attended the event (I‘ll mention no names but they know who they are). Colleagues in Mind very kindly made and donated cakes for the event and the lemon drizzle cake in particular, went down a treat. The ward teams too, were able to ask questions: when I started with Mind there was limited advocacy provision in the city, now, alongside the informal advocacy that we still provide there is IMCA (Independent Mental Capacity Advocate) and Jen Allan our local IMCA from POhWER was on hand to answer questions. We also have IMHA (Independent Mental Health Advocacy), my colleague Lynne Davies joined us for the event and she also works with clients admitted under section, at the Nevill and Mill View hospitals. Jan Comber represented the Alzheimer‘s society and Luis, Denise Crilly and Samantha Bond were on hand from Age UK to tell people about the range of services they provide. Hospital wards can be isolating places and it can be easy to lose touch with what is happening outside, in the ‗real world‘, especially for our older clients, who are often in hospital for some months, awaiting long-term placement. By taking our services into the hospital, we hope to create a positive action, keeping people connected and helping them to make plans for their future as, as one patient told us, ‗it‘s good to have different faces on the ward and something new happening...it can sometimes feel like you‘ve been forgotten about‘.

This small support group offers an opportunity for
men over 40 to have open and frank
conversations about suicide. The aim is to create
a safe space to talk about thoughts, feelings and
experiences that have made it hard to carry on
living. Members say that they find this opportunity
alone to be very valuable. They also offer each
other support and share suggestions for coping
with life, thoughts of suicide and ways to improve
mental health.
The group runs weekly, from 12.00pm to 2.00pm
on Wednesdays, at 51 New England Street.

Head Forward is a wellbeing information website with a particular emphasis on mental health. It is part of Mind in Brighton and Hove‘s West Sussex Advice & Information service, based at the West Sussex Wellbeing Initiatives office in Horsham. The site has been awarded ‗Health On the Net‘ HONcode certification every year since 2009.
The Head Forward Website - A Mind Wellbeing
Information Service
Head Forward was created to provide a comprehensive 24/7 online guide to wellbeing information uniquely linked to local services. Its aim is to provide a simple, accessible and reliable way to find out about wellbeing issues and services, thus enabling an informed choice on how to positively head forward from poor mental health and wellbeing.
Over 70 categories provide specially written introductions regarding: symptoms of poor wellbeing; life issues that contribute to problems; social groups that have particular issues; medical conditions and psychological disorders; available treatments and therapies; sources of specialist support; and sources of help with practical problems.
Following each introduction there is a list of relevant resources including contact details of national, regional, county and local services. Many of these link directly to a service‘s website and provide a location map for local services. The list includes services run by all types of organisation including the NHS, local councils, charities, commercial companies and individuals.
Although resource entries focus on West Sussex-based services, much of the general, regional and national information is relevant to people in Brighton and Hove, the rest of Sussex, Surrey and beyond. For those without easy access to the internet, there is phone support available every Tuesday and Wednesday. Alternatively, email enquiries can be sent at any time.
