Welcome to King’s Arts & Sciences

Welcome to King’s College LondonKing’s College London is formed of four Health Faculties and four Arts &

Sciences Faculties. These areas hold both academic (research and teaching)

and professional services staff. There are also professional services

directorates which work across the whole university, e.g. finance, estates

and facilities.

The President & Principal leads the senior executive team, comprised of

five Vice-Principals, one Head of Administration (soon to be Vice-President

(Operations)). This senior executive team is supplemented by four Assistant

Principals and eight Executive Deans to form the senior leadership team of

King’s.

What is King’s strategic vision? (Where is King’s heading?) King’s is in the final stages of developing a new vision to take us to 2029, the

200 anniversary of the founding of King’s. Our vision will stand on 5 pillars:

Educate to Inspire

Research to Innovate

Serve to Improve

King’s: A civic university in the heart of London

King’s for the World

What are the Arts & Sciences? The Arts & Sciences covers four faculties within King’s: Arts &

Humanities, Natural & Mathematical Sciences, Social Science & Public

Policy, and The Dickson Poon School of Law. These faculties educate over

15,000 students and employ around 2,500 members of staff. We are

distributed over four King’s campuses: Strand, Waterloo, Shrivenham and

Guy’s / Britannia House.

The Arts & Sciences is the foundation stone of King’s College London,

which was developed further in the 1980s with the addition of the four

prestigious Health Schools.

Most staff within the Arts & Sciences are typically located in a Faculty,

School or Department, and will receive a local induction when they begin

work. A few areas bridge over the faculties – such as the Arts & Sciences

core team – and need their own welcome.

What do the Arts & Sciences do? In addition to developing a framework for success, accountability and

coordination across the Arts & Sciences, the core team also arrange events

which provide relaxed environments for staff to meet each other and

strengthen relationships within the Arts & Sciences community, including

the annual Winter Ceilidh.

Where does Arts & Sciences fit into King’s?

Arts & Sciences Leadership The Arts & Sciences Vice-Principal and Chief Operating Officer are

together responsible for overall strategic and operational leadership of the

four faculties. They have a small team that supports them on collaborative

work, specific change management projects including Diversity & Inclusion,

and raising standards consistently throughout the Arts & Sciences.

The Arts & Sciences Senior Executive Team (ASSET) meets fortnightly

to discuss issues which affect staff and students. This is comprised of

Executive Deans and Directors of Administration from each Faculty, senior

leads from finance and HR, the Chief Operating Officer, Strategic Project

Manager and the Vice-Principal for the Arts & Sciences.

What are our guiding principles for work? We all need to remember why King’s exists, and where our own work fits

into the original mission. King’s was founded for the advancement of knowledge,

learning and understanding; and to do that in service of society. King’s believes that great

universities are built on the twin pillars of education and research.

For the core team, our work contributes to the experience of staff and

students, empowering and facilitating academics and professional services

staff to be outstanding in their work. The Arts & Sciences core team do this

through their guiding principles:

Forge new paths –pioneering new ways to work together, piloting

and trialling new ideas and ways of doing things

Empowered leadership and accountability – providing genuine

support alongside metric evidenced key performance indicators

Collaboration – working with others within the university

Investing in Community – encouraging a sense of belonging and

community through bringing colleagues together

Respect – valuing individuals and equity through a culture of

transparency, championing diversity and inclusion for everyone

Ways of Working We all work in different ways. You will have colleagues who have different

work patterns, or have different hours to you. In the Arts & Sciences some

staff have arranged formal flexible working with HR, others have arranged

informal flexible working arrangements with their line manager.

Please bear in mind your colleagues’ work patterns and workload when

communicating with them. Read the Communicating Considerately

document as a prompt to remind us of our responsibility to communicate

respectfully to our colleagues.

Diversity & Inclusion and Athena SWAN King’s is committed to Diversity & Inclusion. This means staff and students

are expected to consider the effect of their actions on their colleagues. We

all have unconscious biases, and if we know what our biases are, we are in a

better position to counter our biases. This influences how we manage our

relationships and what decisions we take.

Every level of the university is working towards improving Diversity &

Inclusion. The university, Arts & Sciences, Faculties, Schools and

Departments have their own actions to address their challenges.

Sustainability King’s has a commitment to deliver on its environmental responsibilities,

e.g. energy saving, recycling, and sustainable transport. The sustainability

team is based in Estates & Facilities and local colleagues champion

sustainability around the university.

Faculty inductions

New staff who are based in one of the four Faculties will have a local

induction. A brief description for each faculty is below.

Arts & Humanities run a Welcome to the Faculty event for all new staff, as well

as Education, Research and External Relations introductions. Your Head of

Department or line manager will direct you to sign up for these local

inductions.

The Dickson Poon School of Law have a Guide for New Staff and a Law

Induction event. Your line manager or senior operations officer will help you

complete your tailored induction, including a tour of the building, an

overview of facilities and introductions to colleagues, processes and systems.

Natural & Mathematical Sciences has several online pages for induction.

Each department welcomes new starters using a Faculty-wide approach,

and there are bespoke inductions for lab-based staff.

Social Science & Public Policy has small induction and networking events

hosted by the Executive Dean, plus induction in departments.

Development and Support at King’s

Probation

In the first few weeks of starting a new role, you should establish clear

written objectives with your line manager for your probation period and

beyond. These objectives are the foundation for probation assessment.

Professional Services and Academic probation policies are linked to below.

Performance Development Review

All employees have a formal annual review. This is typically conducted with

your line manager, or a named senior colleague. There is training for line

managers and staff to help prepare for PDR. The PDR may be the

culmination of regular informal two way conversations or an annual meeting.

Personal Development

The Organisational Development team offers advice on identifying the right

kind of development activities to meet staff’s needs. Staff can register for

training courses through Skills Forge.

Promotion

Academic staff can put themselves forward for promotion as part of the

annual promotion round. All staff can be considered for recognition pay.
