With compliments of Illogan Parish Council
Welcome to Issue 46, Spring 2020 Edition of the Illogan Parish Review. Information is included about what is going on in the Parish from
1st March to the end of May 2020
Do you know which part of Illogan Parish this is?
please see pages 4&5 for further information
2 CHAIRMAN OF THE PARISH COUNCIL:
COUNCILLOR DAVE CRABTREE
I would like to start the year with an apology. You may recall that in the last
Review I stated that the defibrillators funded by the Parish Council would be
installed by the time that edition was delivered, unfortunately they were
not. I am pleased to report that they have now been installed at Tehidy
Country Park Cafe and Illogan Village Hall.
May I thank all parties involved and members of the public for making the
three Christmas Light ‘Switch On’ Events such a success; the weather was on our side for
all three evenings. Work has already begun on planning the events for this year and more
details will follow in due course.
The Parish Council agreed at the January meeting to submit a planning application for the
next phase of the improvements at Illogan Park, with the overall aim of making it a Park
suitable for all ages and providing access for all members of the community.
We are receiving a number of complaints about dog fouling in the Park. I would ask owners to please clear up after their dogs as the consequences of children or adults treading or falling in it are not pleasant.
CORNWALL COUNCILLOR:
COUNCILLOR DAVID EKINSMYTH
Hello again and I hope the New Year and decade is going well for you all
so far.
There are lots of issues facing us as a community at the moment, but I
am going to concentrate on one for this report and that is how we are
proposing to deal with the matter of Climate change. More accurately
what strategies we should adopt to reduce our carbon footprint and help
to meet the Cornwall Council target by 2030 (the Cornwall Council Action Plan and targets
can be viewed on the CC website/environment section).
Since the last review the Parish Council has supported my proposal and resolved to declare
a Climate emergency. This is a hugely powerful statement indicating everyone’s
commitment in the Parish to support other communities and adding to the demands that
Westminster takes a meaningful lead on addressing climate change.
The first step will be to form an Action Group drawing on enthusiastic local people who will
be facilitated and resourced by the Council and Councillors. Its purpose is to plan, initiate
and organise action, continually monitoring the results as we go. There will be a public
meeting to allow people to express their views on how Illogan can play its part in carbon
reduction over time and consider volunteering for action.
My view is clear recognising that the question of climate change has been around for a very
long time and observing that despite substantial evidence there has been little official
urgency shown in taking real action. Despite opposition from many people I do wonder if we
can afford to take the risk with the future of our planet. Most of our younger generation say
no we cannot. A key aim must be to ensure that action is fairly shared within the
community or it will not work. It will not be easy but is delay an option?
So please consider volunteering and feel free to contact me or the Parish Office if you would
like to discuss further. Thanks to those who have already indicated interest.
Illogan led with its Parish Plan, its Green Ripple Project and was one of the first with an approved Neighbourhood Plan. Let us continue in the lead with our Climate Change Action.

CORNWALL COUNCILLOR: COUNCILLOR PHILIP DESMONDE Over the last year, as one of your Cornwall Councillor’s I have been campaigning to improve the quality of life in the Tehidy area of the Parish that I represent and to support job creation and opportunities. South Crofty Mine: I worked with Cornwall Council to invest £1m in the historic South Crofty Mine to secure tens of millions of pounds of investment in the Mine over the coming years with high skilled jobs and apprenticeship schemes. Cornwall Housing: The “Coppers” housing scheme is now being sold and occupied. Sadly about 1 year late and significantly over budget, it is nevertheless, a pleasing development of housing much needed in our area. Life Jackets for Cornish Fishermen from Pool: I encouraged Cornwall Council to stop the madness of buying lifejackets for our Cornish fishermen hundreds of miles away from Liverpool. They are now provided by LGS at Agar Road, Pool, just behind Lidl. Their life saving high-quality Mullion Lifejackets are available to Cornish Fishermen “on their doorstep”. A great result for securing local high skilled jobs, cutting the carbon footprint and promoting the “Made in Cornwall” brand. Local Issues: Campaigning to prevent over-development in the Countryside, promoting and supporting the Tehidy Country Park and waste disposal continue to be key “hot” issues. I have had some success at lobbying these matters, but more needs to be done.
DOG FOULING
It has come to our notice that dog fouling continues to be a problem in certain areas. The Parish Council would like to urge dog owners to clean up after their dogs. Whilst the majority are responsible dog owners and already do this, there are a few who do not. There is a particular problem at Illogan Park and it is unreasonable to expect the Football and Rugby Teams to spend up to an hour clearing dog mess before they can play on the pitch.
A big ‘thankyou’ to all responsible dog owners who continue to clean up after their dog; for those of you who do not, we feel it is not unreasonable to expect you to take responsibility and clear up after your dog.
VANDALISM – YOUR HELP IS NEEDED!
As Chairman of the Council I continue to be concerned about vandalism in our community, particularly in Illogan Park. If you see anything suspicious and an event is, or has just taken place, please ring the Police on 999. If you have information about an event which has already occurred, please contact the Parish Office on 01209 711433 or the Police via 101.
Cllr Dave Crabtree
From the front page: Site of Crane Castle, Illogan
Crane Castle is located on the edge of a prominent coastal cliff known as Carvannel
Downs, overlooking Basset's Cove, some 2500m south west of the Portreath near Illogan
(Grid Ref: SW 6347 4396). Much of the area of the monument itself is short coastal
grassland, the marginal areas however are covered in bracken, gorse, brambles etc.
Cornwall’s protected landscape is well known and much loved for its iconic tin mines and
prehistoric stone circles and these features often form some of our visitors’ fondest
memories of Cornwall and the reason why so many return time after time. These features
are also much treasured by the many local voluntary conservation groups who tirelessly
give up their own time on a regular basis to safeguard heritage sites, working with local
landowners, across the county from Rame Head to West Penwith.
But did you know that the Cornwall Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) contains
most of the County’s scheduled monuments?
There are currently over a 100 Scheduled Monuments (SMs) outside of West Penwith in
the Cornwall AONB on the Heritage at Risk Register. The Register is maintained by Historic
England and is free to search on their website. Cornish monuments at risk range from
prehistoric settlements, barrows and stone circles to defensive and industrial heritage
features.
Collectively these sites are principally on Bodmin Moor, the Lizard and at Rame Head, with
the main threats being vegetation and tree growth and a lack of awareness of their
management needs. Despite their obvious interest, the vast majority of sites contain no
on site interpretation or descriptions other than what survives of the monument so most
people would be unaware that they are passing through an Iron Age or Bronze Age
settlement or defensive fort. Only with the stone circles, tin mines or eighteenth century
forts that have a significant physical presence are the monuments more obvious.
In some cases inappropriate, albeit unintentional, harmful attention by visitors can be a
threat to sites such as at Stowe’s Pound on Bodmin Moor where the building of “fairy
castles” by visitors risks harming the original heritage value of this site. On others such as
the rock labyrinth art at Rocky Valley, Tintagel, the tracing by visitors on to paper of the
labyrinth features on the cliff face is causing the gradual erosion of these features
themselves. In these and other cases heritage is best safeguarded for future generations
by leaving only footprints on the path and taking only photographs and memories home.
This project seeks to safeguard and improve scheduled monuments across the Cornwall
Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) working to enable local people and our
visitors to better enjoy these places. We are looking at 40 sites across: -
Rame Head
Bodmin Moor
Lizard
The North and South Coasts, including the Round in Tehidy Country Park and Crane
Castle in Illogan.
We are seeking to improve these monument sites across the AONB, through site
enhancements, including some repairs, access improvements and the clearance of
damaging scrub and to enable people to better enjoy the sites.
We are keen for local residents and our visitors to increasingly experience the sites in
person and this could include volunteering your time (individually or as a group) by joining

cont’d...us to clear scrub from some sites or just getting out and about on foot and enjoying
the sites as all of them are on or adjacent to public rights of way with plenty of walking
routes available on www.iwalkcornwall.co.uk. We will be organizing guided walks also during
the lifetime of the project.
The project is also supported by community based archaeology groups including the
Meneage Archaeology Group, the Cornwall Archaeological Society, TimeSeekers and the
Rame Conservation Trust and artist Kurt Jackson. The Cornwall Archaeology Unit has helped
us to train these groups to work with us to survey sites at risk.
Thanks to our funders who have made this project possible: -
Chris Coldwell
Winter is when we enjoy extra special events
such as the Illogan Players Pantomime in the
cosy environment that is the Village Hall but
for one person it is also a time to tackle all
those little jobs that we’ve been meaning to
do. You may have noticed that Tom, our
superb maintenance manager, has tackled
those pesky potholes in the car park, kept the
toilets flushing, touched up bits of our interior
paintwork and ensured our lights continue to
shine bright. He’s also reluctantly boarded up
the community shelter due to vandalism but
has a cunning plan to bring it back to
community use. Tom is one of those unsung
heroes that you never consciously notice
what they’ve done but who’s efforts the hall
and our community couldn’t do without.
Thank you Tom!
Photos are of three of the principal cast members of the Illogan Player’s panto Treasure Island and three of the chorus members. The cast are drawn from the local community of Illogan Parish (or very close by) include children right through to pensioners and this year numbered 35 members of cast and crew.

All equipment will be provided but you might like to bring your own gloves.
We look forward to seeing you.
Another Successful Year for Illogan Scouts
What an amazing year we’ve had Scouting in Illogan. There are many great
achievements we can reflect on in 2019 but with all sections at near capacity perhaps our
greatest achievement is that the Group continues to grow from strength to strength. We
now look forward to a fun packed 2020 with all the usual camping and outdoor activity
opportunities (and more) that you would expect from a forward thinking scout group.
I think my personal highlight, apart from
seeing my Daughter invested as a Scout
Leader by the District Commissioner at
the Christmas Carol Service, was
spending an evening with Mr Leonard
‘Skip’ Cole, a King’s Scout from
Falmouth. He achieved the highest
award in scouting when King George VI
was still on the throne! Obviously of
senior years now, he captivated the
audience of young people from across
the Group with his witty stories and
memories of his scouting days. He also
gave out badges to everyone there from
his collection!
We have been helped throughout the year by various organisations and would like to
publically thank all those that have supported us in 2019, including: Morrisons, Tesco,
Regal Cinema, Bookers, JDS, Cornish Oven, Rhodda’s Dairy, Royal British Legion (Illogan
Branch) and Nine Ashes Scout Activity Centre, Bodmin.
The Beaver Colony, Cub Pack and Scout Troop all meet on Thursday nights during school
term time at Illogan Village Hall. Beavers is for boys and girls aged 6 to 8 years old and
meet from 4-30pm until 5-45pm. Cubs is for boys and girls aged from 8 to 10 ½ and
meet from 6pm until 7-30pm and Scouts is for boys and girls from 10 ½ until reaching
their 14th birthday and meet from 7pm until 9pm. After this age Explorer Scouts is
provided at a District level until they are 18 years old with the local groups meeting in
Redruth or Camborne.
There are limited spaces available in the younger 2 sections and at only £27 per term,
Scouting in Illogan still represents great value for money. Please call Neil Payne on
07899 800 480 or email [email protected] for your child to come along for three
free taster sessions without obligation.
GIRLGUIDING IN ILLOGAN
Rainbows (girls aged 5 to 7) have been busy this term working towards their badges and
having fun making friends and learning new skills. They have done a village litter pick and
learnt about thoughtful shopping and the food bank as well as joining the other units for
parades and cinema trips.
Brownies (7 to 9) started their term with baking delicious
shortbread biscuits and then went on to make bracelets
from recycled coke bottles and plastic bags in line with
Girlguiding’s Future Girl challenge which was all about
recycling and reusing. The older girls had the chance to go
to Nine Ashes near Bodmin for
an adventure day of all sorts of
outdoor activities – the weather
was best described as
‘challenging’ and all the girls
came home covered in mud but having had a great time.
We celebrated fireworks night with real sparklers and with
edible ones made from chocolate fingers and sprinkles – both
were greatly enjoyed! We went to Remembrance Parade and
the girls did us proud – looked immaculate and behaved so
sensibly and responsibly.
A lighter hearted parade was Redruth’s lantern parade
which we went to as reindeer, having had great fun the
week before with glitter and pipe cleaners making our
antlers.
We ended the term with our Christmas party before the
girls had a chance to attend a Guiding only showing of
Frozen 2, complete with a badge for attending!
Guides (10 to 14) started the term with a weekend
camp, designed to introduce the younger girls to
camping for the first time – unfortunately the weather
had other ideas and it poured and blew a gale all weekend – we managed to not blow
away and the girls had a great time and kept each other cheerful despite getting very
wet.
Indoors during the term we tried some healthy eating recipes and baked some Halloween treats. We had a visit from a photographer to give us some tips and ideas for our photography badge and learnt some very interesting stretches from a yoga teacher as part of our theme for the term about looking after our bodies and minds. On a lighter
note we had a pamper evening and enjoyed make up and massages after playing some very boisterous games. We took part in both the Remembrance and lantern parades and finished our term with a fun filled party.

ILLOGAN SCHOOL PTA
A big thank you to all of you that came to our Christmas market, there were over 50 stalls
for everyone to browse. We were apprehensive as it was the first Market the current
committee had organised, but Illogan Village turned out in style.
Through events like this we are able to fund items outside the school budget; during the
festive period the children were treated to a show by Squashbox theatre, called the
Christmassy Christmas show. This was followed by the children’s bazaar on 19th
December, with a special visit from Santa.
Last year saw the first Illogan Parish Fair combined with the School’s Summer
Celebration. We weren’t sure how this would work, but it was a great success. We have
decided to make this a permanent arrangement and have decided, jointly, on a new name
which is Illogan Village Fair. This year it will be held on 4th July.
Our next event will be Easter bingo. This will be held on Wednesday 25th March and Easter eggs will be the prizes.

HELP!
Girlguiding In Illogan is flourishing, with full units of Rainbows, Brownies and Guides – around 70 girls aged from 5 to 14
But a combination of retirements and young women heading off to university means that we are facing a shortage of volunteer leaders to support girls in their units. Meetings are once a week for between one and two hours and there is full training provided.
Leaders have great fun, learn new skills and make life long friends – please consider com- ing along to join the fun and help this thriving community of girls and young women to go from strength to strength.

The Award was instituted in his memory and is made on nomination from the public at large to mark outstanding contributions to the community in any field by any individual outside paid professional duty. School for Social Entrepreneurs - Growing Business Ideas
A Springboard programme of support is being offered to individuals, community groups and businesses which are less than 12 months old in the Illogan area. Support sessions will be held in the village in spring/summer.
SSE Cornwall is delivering the support in Falmouth, Penryn, Truro, Redruth, Camborne, Pool and St Day as well as in Illogan. It is all fully funded and so completely free for people to access. The aim is to offer this free support to individuals and unincorporated community groups who may have an idea for a community business/social enterprise they wish to explore and develop that idea further; through to new social enterprises/business (less than 12 months old) who wish to access tailored business support to enable them to develop and grow their existing business further. The programme has secured funding and we’re currently promoting it to all communities and beginning to sign up clients ready for a start date for delivery in March this year.
The programme delivery will run through to 30th June 2022 and will mostly be delivered through a mix of tailored workshops where you can meet like-minded people at similar stages of developing/delivering their business idea plus up to 4 hours of mentoring to help you take your ideas forward.
