Welcome to Imagine No Malaria Before you even get started with this campaign, I want to say, “Thank You.”

Thank you for hearing the call to act… for saying yes… for joining with United Methodists across the world as we say a resounding “NO” to death and suffering caused by malaria. This is a historic campaign in the life of our churches. It is an invitation to truly do all the good we can, in all the places we can, for all the people we can.

Jesus has sent us into this world to preach the kingdom of God and to heal the sick and with Imagine No Malaria, we are doing just that. We are bringing together our creativity and energy, passion and commitment, in order to not only imagine a world of health and abundance, but to make it happen.

This task is the work and effort of our churches and all of the individuals who support those congregations. This task is the power of our connectional system – one church, across this globe, all working together.

If you have questions as you go, please ask. If you come up with new and exciting ways of inviting others to join us, please share. If you hear stories of individuals and families who have been impacted by malaria, please tell them. The Five-Step Plan to Save LivesAs your local church engages with this campaign, we have found that there are five steps that can help your church succeed. These steps should be seen as a bare-bones structure and we hope that your church - whatever size it may be – will find in this structure flexibility and room for creativity in your local setting.

Before you get started, be sure to assemble your Imagine No Malaria team. You will want 3-4 people who will help organize the efforts of your local church. Look for people who can give their time, who have hearts for mission, and are willing to support the campaign financially themselves.

We want to encourage churches to engage with Imagine No Malaria for a 6-8 week season in the life of their churches. This amount of time allows information to sink in, for excitement to be shared, and for the reach to be broad. Think about a time in the life of your church that this campaign makes sense. You could plan for a season of Imagine No Malaria during Lent or Advent. This might be a special mission emphasis during the summer months. Or you could look

at the six weeks between World Malaria Day (April 25) and our Annual Conference in June as a time to engage and build momentum going into our conference-wide celebration of ministry.

Sample Planning CalendarThis sample planning calendar will help you to see how you might spend a season focusing on Imagine No Malaria. There is a blank planning calendar on the CD for you to print copies of and use.

Weeks 1 & 2Focus on planning and building awareness with key church leaders and groups like the UMW and youth director. Build invitation lists for Impact 100 events and determine location/timing of all activities.

Weeks 3 & 4Focus on advocacy and raising awareness with the entire congregation. During this time, the church should post flyers, put information in the Sunday bulletin, set up their educational display, and begin making announcements or showing videos during Sunday School and the Worship service. The first Fundraising Activities should happen at this time, and invitations should go out for the first Impact 100 events.

Week 5 & 6Continue awareness building through information in bulletins, worship and displays, as well as through Fundraising Activities. RSVP’s should be obtained from Impact 100 invitees, and the events hosted during this time. Make sure to follow-up with Impact 100 attendees after the event to answer questions and encourage that gifts can be turned in during the offering time of the next Sunday service.

Week 7 & 8Focus on achieving the goal, possibly by adding additional Impact 100 events (if necessary). The church should also increase awareness of the Sunday to Save Lives celebration.

STEP 1 – Determine to Save LivesWe want to dream big and really commit to saving lives in the Iowa Annual Conference, so every church is encouraged to set a goal for the number of lives they want to save through Imagine No Malaria.

Most congregations base this goal on their average attendance on a normal Sunday, rather than church membership. Remember, this is not a goal for one special offering, but what your congregation wants to accomplish together over the next 2-5 years.

By setting a goal for the number of lives you hope to save, our campaign staff can best resource you in accomplishing that goal. We will be able to walk beside you and encourage you along the way.

So what should this goal be? Prayerfully consider that question with your church council, mission team, youth group, and all other groups in your church that can help to make a difference.

Remember: a congregation’s goal helps guide the activity plan, but it does not have to be a financial pledge. We will not regularly bill you for this amount. We simply want to know what your church is trying to achieve so that we can best resource you in achieving that goal.

One of our suggestions is to become an “IMAGINE Church” by setting a goal to save 10-25 lives per attendee.

We have found that churches most successful in reaching IMAGINE Church goals are those that follow the five-step plan in its entirety.

In setting this goal, you want to make sure that your church leadership is also engaged and excited about the campaign. Be sure to ask for their personal investment and support and to help identify other key leaders to ask for support at the beginning of this campaign.

One way of doing that might be: “How many lives do you think you can impact through this ministry? A gift of $10 will impact 1 life. A gift of $100 will impact 100 lives. Would you consider impacting the lives of 100 children with a gift of less than $1 a day? That is a pledge of $28 a month, for three years, for a total gift of $1,000. This sacrificial pledge will allow 100 children to live long lives!”

When you have determined your local church-wide goal, please complete the Affirmation of Goal Form (appendix), signed by both the pastor and the church treasurer or lay leader.

STEP 2 – Build Awareness and AdvocateAwareness building should be an ongoing process during a church’s participation in this ministry. Informed, energized donors are more likely to donate than those with only minimal knowledge. A number of the following resources are available on the INM CD and as downloads on our conference website: www.iaumc.org/imaginenomalaria In the left hand columns, look especially at “Local Church Resources” and “Resources, Downloads, and Seasonal Materials” There you will find instructions, examples of weekly announcements, skits, etc.

Printed MaterialsInformational materials are available online or from the Field Coordinator, including brochures, posters, worship resources. Congregations are encouraged to put information into their worship bulletin for the duration of their participation in Imagine No Malaria. These informational resources can also be included in congregational newsletters. (Order form on CD)

VideosVideos are available on www.imaginenomalaria.org and on the Imagine No Malaria DVD. Most INM videos are between 2 and 5 minutes in length – excellent for giving a quick overview and engaging an audience. Use during Sunday School, other adult classes, and worship.

Church AnnouncementsAnnouncements are encouraged each Sunday during the duration of church participation. These can be short, such as reading one or two facts about malaria, or they can be more in depth, such as a testimony from a congregant who decided to support INM or a youth skit. Continual announcements reinforce the urgency of this ministry and remind individuals that they have the power to save lives.

Educational Displays Creating an educational display at church helps individuals visualize the impact of this ministry. Set up a bed net using a cot with tulle or other netted fabric hanging above. Make your own net using the instruction sheet included in the church resource packet. These displays can be interactive depending on the congregation’s abilities and needs: for example an individual could take a pipe-cleaner mosquito off the bed net after donating.

Fundraising ActivitiesFun, light-hearted activities driven by the youth can help gain community-wide participation. This allows the community to see how the UMC is making a difference locally and globally.

Examples of activities that have garnered community-wide participation include a U2-Charist, 5-K runs, Skeet Shoots, and Golf Tournaments.

Note: these activities are primarily used to gain greater support and interest in INM. Spaghetti dinners and car washes allow all church members to participate and help to raise awareness, but should be partnered with Impact 100 events.

Impact 100 is by far the fastest way to reach a church goal. The number of spaghetti dinners it would require to achieve even a smaller church’s goal, such as saving 500 lives, is simply too labor and time intensive for most churches to consider reasonable. One Impact 100 event with five donors will save the same number of lives.

STEP 3 – Uniting Faith and Works to Overcome MalariaAdvocate, Raise Funds, Engage Your Community

In this campaign we have three calls to action: to advocate, to raise funds, and to engage our communities.

In the work of building awareness, you have already begun to be advocates. Continue to tell the story of Imagine No Malaria and find ways to be a voice for the voiceless. Visiting www.imaginenomalaria.org/advocacy will also describe ways that you can be advocates through letter writing, phone calls, and other work to increase the awareness of global health needs.

The primary work of Imagine No Malaria is to get life-saving resources into the hands of those who need it the most, so raising funds are important. As you think about how your congregation might encourage donations, there are two primary ways that have been successful in our churches: Impact 100 and the Sunday to Save Lives. Each encourages people to give generously and faithfully to our work. More on each program follows in this section.

Last, but not least, we are called to engage with the community just outside of the church doors in this work. Our neighbors are hungry to make a difference and this ministry is a wonderful opportunity to create partnerships, build new relationships, and make a difference in the process. Be sure that your efforts to raise awareness and money are not limited to your church members, but move outside the doors to basketball games, dinners, and many other creative ways to meet your community where it might be. Impact 100 (I-100)

This is the easiest and quickest way for congregations to reach their goals, because joining I-100 means committing to save at least 100 lives. If a congregation set a goal to save 1,000 lives, only 10 people would need to make a gift or pledge to I-100 to reach the goal. The following are examples of pledges to save 100 – 1,000 lives:

A series of intimate, in-home receptions are the best method for inviting members to Impact 100.

- Audience: key individuals with the interest or ability to support INM: consider inviting 1-2 people from each church group (Sunday School classes, choir, council, UMW, etc) so they can then host a reception for their group.

- Timeline: Host the reception at minimum three weeks prior to the Sunday to Save Lives.

- Invitations: send personal invitations two weeks before the reception and follow up roughly one week ahead to confirm attendance. Experience has shown that bulletin or worship announcements will yield few attendees.

- Agenda: Serve light hors d’oeuvres and allow a time of fellowship for members to mingle and chat.

o Begin the presentation with either the Overview DVD, or by reviewing the “Malaria Facts”.

o Share information on how The UMC is working to overcome this disease.

o Ask the pastor (who should attend all events) to endorse Imagine No Malaria.

o Ask a committee member who has pledged to share their personal testimony on INM.

o Ask attendees to consider impacting 100 lives with a gift of just $28 a month over the next three years, for a total gift of $1,000.

o Review the process to complete the donation envelope, and assist as necessary:

Mark the appropriate box for the number of lives the donor wishes to impact.

Complete the pledge box with the duration and frequency of pledge payments.

BE SURE TO SIGN ALL PLEDGES! Without a signature, a pledge is not valid.

- Materials: Distribute a donation envelope, a wristband, and personalized letter from the pastor (on the CD) to all attendees during the “ask” (Order items with the Resource Order Form from the CD)

- Follow-Up: Call after the event to answer questions and encourage pledge envelopes to be returned.

A dessert reception, dinner or other event at the church can supplement in-home receptions in order to open the opportunity to Impact 100 lives to all church members. Simply repeat the previous plan for in-home receptions – it is still important to personally confirm RSVP’s, and to follow-up after the event.

For smaller churches one-on-one personal requests may be more practical than a reception. In this case, work with the pastor to develop a list of members with the interest and anticipated ability to commit to Impact 100.

- Materials: Prepare a donation envelope and personal letter from the pastor for each donor.

- The “Ask”: Call to schedule a time before or after church to meet with the individual. Share campaign details, including facts about malaria and information on how The UMC is working to eliminate this disease. Ask the individual to consider impacting 100 lives with a pledge of just $28 a month for three years (total gift: $1,000).

- Follow-Up: Call to follow-up roughly 3-5 days later to answer questions and encourage them to return the pledge envelope to the church leader for INM or to the church during the worship collection time.

Tips for Successful Impact 100 events

- Determine at the start of the church effort the number of Impact 100 donors needed to reach the church goal. To do so, simply divide the fundraising goal by $1,000: for example, a church with average attendance of 200 with a goal to save 10 lives per attendee would divide $20,000 (Total $ Raised) by $1,000 (I-100 Pledge). That equals 20 people – if just these twenty committed to impacting 100 lives, the church would raise the entire goal!

- Consider how many events the church should host. Each event should have no more than 15-20 in attendance – the more personal the request, the more likely a gift.

o 1-150 worship attendees could host just one reception

o 150-300 worship attendees can host 2 receptionso 250-350 worship can host 2-3 receptionso 350+ worship attendees should host 3-5 or more receptions

- Avoid limiting the list of potential donors. Interested individuals may include those who have or whose loved ones have mission, healthcare or military experience, and parents, grandparents or others who love children.

- Keep requests personal – volunteers should share why they chose to Impact 100 in order to help potential donors open their hearts and minds to this opportunity.

- Ensure the pastor attends all Impact 100 events to endorse INM and lend support to all requests.

- Encourage donors to complete pledge envelopes while at the I-100 event. Follow up to encourage pledge submission soon after so the event and request do not fade from the donor’s mind.

- Remember: the goal of INM is to save lives, and this is an incredible opportunity to do just that. Many of those who cannot write a one-time check for $1,000 can write a check for $28 once a month!

Sunday to Save Lives

After building awareness and raising funds through fun activities and Impact 100 receptions, the effort culminates in a special Sunday to Save Lives to celebrate the number of lives impacted.

This is also the final official opportunity during your season of giving for Impact 100 pledges to be made, and for the entire congregation to have an opportunity to support INM through a special offering (INM donation envelopes should be included in bulletins).

An effective Sunday to Save Lives will include the following:

- Information regarding INM and announcing the date of the Sunday to Save Lives should be posted in the Sunday bulletin for at least 2-3 weeks prior to the event. (Sample bulletin inserts on the CD)

- Send a personalized letter from the pastor to all church members the week before the Sunday to Save Lives. (Sample letter on CD). Include an informational INM brochure in the mailing.

- Include a donation envelope in each bulletin distributed on the Sunday to Save Lives.

- Encourage the pastor to give a special sermon, share special prayers, and determine if the youth can participate by acting out a skit about malaria prevention.

- Ask a member who committed to I-100 to give their witness of why this ministry is important in their lives.

- Invite all members to complete the donation envelope, asking them to consider how many lives they are able to impact (ex. 10 lives with a gift of $100 or 100 lives with a pledge of $28 a month). If possible, review the process for completing the pledge envelope.

- Celebrate the lives saved by the congregation, and thank all for their support and participation.

- Report final number of lives saved to the congregation in a worship announcement the following week.

Church Treasury Gift

Including a commitment from the treasury provides another way for churches to contribute to Imagine No Malaria without investing additional time. For churches that are in the midst of a capital campaign, this might be a decision to tithe from the campaign to Imagine No Malaria. Other congregations have designated endowments that have been set aside specifically for mission and outreach ministries. These treasury gifts can help your church make a large impact with a pledge for a three-to-five year span.

- Educate key decision makers on Imagine No Malaria and the commitment of the church to this ministry.

- Schedule and complete a presentation to finance committee or church council, to set a church pledge.

- Consider making a gift from the church endowment, if one is in place.

STEP 4 – Send in Your Gifts and Make an ImpactEncouraging a congregation to go beyond Nothing But Nets to save more than one life per attendee, is our greatest chance to end malaria related deaths in Africa by 2015.

As your church begins collecting funds, we want to encourage you to use our donation envelopes and pledge cards. These can be procured with the Resource Order Form.

Pledges

Pledge cards should be used at Impact-100 events and when you are speaking with folks about making a pledge over time to Imagine No Malaria. Pledge cards can then be inserted into a donation envelope.

Each pledge will be followed up on by Imagine No Malaria staff. You can help us out by making sure the cards are signed (a signature is required to validate the pledge). A helpful practice is to provide a donor with donation envelopes to match the commitment time frame of their gift (36 for a monthly donation over three years, three envelopes for a yearly donation).

For those who wish to make a special gift to this campaign, there are also pledge forms that may be downloaded from the conference website. These forms allow a donor to select larger amounts such as $5,000-$10,000 and to select a longer time frame for those gifts.

- The donor should select the box that corresponds to the number of lives he or she wants to save.

- Select the timeframe over which the pledge will be made.

- Select the method of payment for the pledge, via either check or credit card.

- Finally, SIGN THE PLEDGE so it will be valid.

- Indicate if the gift or pledge will be made via check or credit card. If paying by credit card, the donor should fill out the appropriate information, making sure the card has not expired and will not expire soon. To be a valid form of payment, gifts made by credit card require a signature.

- Contact information for the donor should be completed along with the church name for credit to the organization. This information is necessary to acknowledge all gifts and pledges and to send pledge reminders.

Online pledges can be made by visiting www.imaginenomalaria.org . These donations are treated the same as written donations.

Donation Envelopes

Donation envelopes are very useful and will allow a donor to make a one-time donation, submit a pledge card, or fulfill their pledge by including a pledge payment.

One added feature of these donation envelopes is that a donor can write in debit or credit card information to make their donation. For churches that do not have the ability to process these kinds of transactions, this is a way to expand possibilities.

All donation envelopes should be collected, opened, and any discrepancies corrected such as missing signatures on credit card donations. Where possible, transcribe donor information from the envelope to the Record of Contribution form.

You are invited to make a copy of the donation envelope for your records, but original donation envelopes need to be sent in with your donations for all credit card donations, pledge payments, and pledge cards.

Record of Contribution Form

The Record of Contribution form allows us to be good stewards of the gifts that have been made. It will allow us to thank every single donor for their contribution and to follow-up in a timely manner with those who have made pledges.

1. Open all envelopes and match the amount enclosed with the gift information provided on the envelope. Correct any discrepancies.

2. Record all donor gift information as shown in the sample.

3. Summarize the totals in the “Total Gift/Pledge ($)” column and “Payment ($)” column.

4. Write one check to: UMC-Imagine No Malaria to cover all cash donations and checks written directly to the church. Note donors covered in this check on the Record of Contribution under “special instructions”.

Churches should keep a copy of the Record of Contribution for their records and then include the Record of Contribution form and the original donation envelopes when their gifts.

Where to Send Gifts:

Donors should be encouraged to write checks to UMC – Imagine No Malaria. These checks can be mailed with the donation envelopes and Record of Contribution. If cash or checks written to the church are received, these should be deposited by the church and one check should be written to UMC-Imagine No Malaria.

There are a few options for submitting your Imagine No Malaria donations.

1) You can submit your Imagine No Malaria donations along with your monthly remittance form and other apportionments and special offerings: IAUMC PO Box 4564, Des Moines, IA 50305-4564. Be sure to include the Record of Contribution form and any original donation envelopes/pledge cards.

2) If you submit your apportionments online or through EFT, you may include Imagine No Malaria in that transaction. However, you will need to mail in the Record of Contribution form and any original donation envelopes/pledge cards. These can be mailed directly to the conference center: IAUMC – Imagine No Malaria 2301 Rittenhouse St. Des Moines, IA 50321

3) You can write a check on behalf of your church and mail it directly to: UMC – Imagine No Malaria P.O. Box 440544 Nashville, TN 37244 Be sure to include the Record of Contribution form and any original donation envelopes/pledge cards.

The only difference between these methods is how fast the funds are received by the Imagine No Malaria campaign. Gifts sent directly to Nashville will be processed and available for ministry faster than ones that travel through our conference and the Advance. We do want to provide the flexibility for your church to use the method that is most convenient for you, however. Whichever method you choose, your church may receive Rainbow Covenant credit (red or yellow) for your gifts.

STEP 5 – Continue the MovementThis ministry is an ongoing effort of the entire denomination to combat the global diseases of poverty… and we hope will be viewed as an ongoing ministry at the local level as well.

An annual event, such as an advent offering or a sleep out under mosquito nets during World Malaria Day festivities, helps keep Imagine No Malaria in the hearts and minds of congregants.

We hope and pray that your local church engagement with this campaign will not be a one-time event but that you will join us in not only eradicating malaria, but as witnesses to this world that United Methodists are standing up for global health.
