Ever Get Discouraged Or Feel Like A Failure?
Well, Elijah the prophet, in today's Reading was thoroughly discouraged and felt like a big time failure. He just had his fa-
mous victory over the three hundred prophets of the pagan god Baal. God worked a miracle supporting Elijah, and Elijah put
to death these pagan prophets, who had been leading the people into sin.
Elijah thought that his troubles were over and that the people would no longer follow Baal. He felt that his work as a proph-
et was successful. However, Queen Jezebel, who was a pagan had become enraged when she heard what Elijah had done.
She placed a bounty on Elijah's head, and there were many assassins looking to collect this bounty.
It was a hard blow for Elijah to accept. He just achieved a great victory for God, and now was a man on the run with a price
on his head. So sitting under a tree in the desert, greatly discouraged and feeling useless, he and ask God for death.
How many of us have ever felt discouraged and useless, especially when our best plans and hopes get dashed, even when we
try to do good, when we try to do the right thing, when we try to be faithful to God? Elijah was not a weakling, nor was he
looking to escape God or His teachings. Yet, as great as Elijah was, he was not immune from discouragement and the feel-
ing that he was a failure.
Our Lord Himself experienced discouragement on various occasions. Once He cried out "Oh faithless and perverse genera-
tion, how long must I be with you? How long must I put up with you?" In today's Gospel when He told the crowd that He was
the Bread of Life that came down from heaven. The people were like, "Yeah right! You are from Nazareth, we know who
your parents are." In the Garden of Gethsemane He cried out, "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?"
Our Lord allowed Himself to experience what most of us undergo in our own personal lives from time to time: rejection,
misunderstanding and abandonment. He allowed Himself to experience rejection and discouragement. He gave us an exam-
ple that we need to realize how much we need others, especially God, His love, His power and His strength.
Isn't it true that in good times when everything is going along wonderfully for us, we can sometimes forget about our need
for others including God? We can even neglect to have a sense of gratitude towards others, including God, for all that others
and God have done for us, and continues to do for us.
Great moments of discouragement and failure can often be an opportunity of allowing others to be a source of renewal and
strength for us. Elijah was exhausted, discouraged and ready to give up. Yet, at that moment he was nourished and re-
freshed by an angel. Have you ever been touched by an angel when you were sad, discouraged or feeling useless?
Has anyone ever given you refreshing words or encouragement that gave you a sense of renewed hope? Perhaps it was an
Angel, or God, or a close friend or relative, or perhaps it was a total stranger who saw your distress and came to your help?
The greatest among us have had their own valleys of failures and discouragement to walk through. Most likely it was the
help of someone who cared, who helped them climb out of their dark valley so that they could continue their journey of life
with a sense of renewed hope and fulfillment.
Elijah went on to do many other things for God after he was renewed and strengthened in the desert. Jesus revealed His
amazing victory over sin and death after His own personal experiences of rejection and discouragement. No one should al-
low discouragements or a sense of uselessness to overwhelm them.

“In the Gospel, we read the parable of the Good Samaritan, that speaks of a man assaulted and left half dead at the side
of the road. People pass by him and look at him. But they do not stop, they just continue on their journey, indiff erent to
him: it is none of their business! How often do we say: it’s not my problem! How often do we turn the other way and
pretend not to see! Only a Samaritan, a stranger, sees him, stops, lift s him up, takes him by the hand, and cares for
him” (cf. Lk 10:29-35). (Pope Francis, July 2013, St. Francis of Assisi Hospital).
How many of us have passed by the stranger needing help on the street or even wondered what can I do that would make
a difference? You have an opportunity to make a difference in someone’s life right now!
Over the last few years our community has worked together to provide and expand services to serve the area homeless. In February
2013, with the support of the United Way and the Housing and Homelessness Coalition, Catholic Charities opened the doors of the
Wausau Community Warming Center; offering a warm meal and a place to get in out of the cold to 15 adult men and women. We
soon discovered this facility was not large enough to serve all in need. In October 2013, we opened our new location to not only contin-
ue these services but to expand from 15 to 25 and to provide shower and laundry facilities as well.
Even though the Warming Center is only open November through April, Catholic Charities has made a commitment to serving the
homeless in our community. Th rough our center coordinator and our St. Lawrence Community Services (SLCS) staff , we continue to
meet with many of our guests to build relationships and meet their basic needs. Our SLCS staff is available year-round to work with
each guest and help identify steps to get them out of homelessness. Our commitment does not end just because the weather gets warm-
er. We also continue to prepare to reopen our doors on November 1.
As you can see, this community and Catholic Charities have taken steps towards ending homelessness. We look forward to the day
when we work ourselves out of business. In the meantime we need your help! Won’t you join us in helping those who are on the side of
the road? Your dollar could be the one that helps someone wear clean clothes to a job interview. Your dollar could be the one that pro-
vides a warm meal. Your dollar could be the one that provides a place for someone to rest their head. Your dollar could be the one that
gives hope to an individual who has felt all alone in this wonderful community.
On behalf of all those we serve, you have our sincerest gratitude.

Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults ~ RCIA
Do you have questions about the Catholic
faith?
Have you ever wondered why the Catholic
Church celebrates mass the way we do?
These are a few questions people ask themselves when
they participate in mass or other Catholic celebrations.
If you would like these questions answered, the RCIA program may be just what you need. RCIA is an opportunity to bring those seeking a fuller understanding the Catholic Church and to an intimate union with Him.
RCIA generally starts meeting in September and ends in April, when the Catechumens and Candidates are fully initiated during Easter Vigil on March 26, 2016. At this time, our candidate session schedule is flexible and may be determined based on those in need of the sacraments.
If you would like to talk about your faith journey and how RCIA could help you with that, contact Fr. Bob, Fr. Dan or Noel at 715-842-4543. A time will be arranged to meet and discuss your personal situation and how RCIA can help you.
