Welcome to Grade 5 Parent Information
Night
Sign up for a parent/teacher conference.(Sheets are on rectangular table in back of room)
They are offered on Thursday, December 10, Friday, December 11 & Monday, December 14.
Fifth Grade Curriculum
English Language Arts
LEAD 21
The students will be involved in reading groups and will be exposed to various genres of reading.
Read aloud, “Hooked on Books”
The students will take the New York State ELA Assessment on April 5-7, 2016
Math Math program is Math in Focus
The students will be learning about: place value, factors, prime and composite numbers, prime factorization, base ten operations, multiplication, division, geometry, volume, decimals, fractions, algebra, measurement and data.
Your children will take the New York State Math Assessment on April 13-15, 2016.
Social Studies
Grade 5 Social Studies is based on the history and geography of the Western Hemisphere, including the development of cultures, civilizations, and empires; interaction between societies; and the comparison of the government and economic systems of modern nations. It also incorporates elements of archaeology. The course is divided into seven Key Ideas that cover a time span from prehistory into modern times.
Science and Health
The students will be actively engaged in the following science kits: Meet the Creatures, Electromagnetism and Ecosystems.
The students will take classes on life skills through Western New York United
Homework Policy The students will receive homework
nightly. (ex. spelling, math pages, social studies terms, independent reading etc.)
Everything we do is listed on the SMART Board after Lunch. Students receive ample time to fill out their agenda. It is a great form of communication between teacher and parents.
The purpose of homework is to practice what has been learned in school.
Attendance The district emphasizes the importance
of school attendance and that appointments should be scheduled after school hours when possible.
Parents must notify the school when their child is absent and an excuse must be sent when the child returns to school.
All missed work will be expected to be completed
Snacks
The 5th grade students have an early lunch.
We will have a late afternoon snack time, I encourage you to send in healthy snacks.
Book Club Orders• Only checks or money orders will be
accepted.
• Make them payable to “Scholastic Book Club.”
• Send the order and payment to school in an envelope with the child’s name on it.
• You can also order and pay online at Scholastic.com the classroom code will be on a sticker attached to each book order.
Birthdays
Yes, we still celebrate birthdays in 5th grade.
We currently have 18 students in our class.
If you plan on sending in a treat please include all necessary items for the celebration.
Students are no longer allowed to take treats to other classrooms due to allergies in the building.
Trip to Philadelphia/Gettysburg
June 1-3. 2015
1st meeting will be held Tuesday October, 27th at 6:30 pm
You must attend meetings if you plan on being a chaperone.
One Chaperone per family, we may limit chaperones (lottery)
