Mr. SchultzRoom 3204

Are you in the correct class?

Today’s Agenda1. Understand the routine of the class2. Understand the rules and expectations of the class3. Get to know Mr. Schultz and his goals for the senior class4. Complete a questionnaire5. Listen and pay attention. Today is an important day.

REMINDER…You have not graduated yet!

Let’s get back to work!

Your senior year…

1st Semester: Economics!2nd Semester: Government!

May 2014: You graduate!

• You are lucky….

Who cares!• Mr. Schultz seriously it is 2nd

semester of my senior year.• I do not care about government.• I just want to be done with high

school.

You should care because…

One Quick Question….Are you like last year’s seniors?

Because they said….

….Every senior class thinks they are the best.

“Mr. Schultz just wants to be every student’s

favorite teacher. He thinks he is the man.

He ain’t ______!”

Mr. Schultz’s response, “Haters gonna hate!”

Stop with this excuse….

“Mr. Schultz you are cool and everything but

government just isn’t my thing. It is too hard.

I don’t get it.”

“OMG, Mr. Schultz swears. He is the most ‘swearingest’ (I

don’t think this is even a word but its been said.) teacher at

this school. He swears.”

(This is true!)

QUICK NOTE….the best thing about teaching seniors…

“I do not care what kind of student you were before. I do not care what mistakes you

made over the past three years. I only care about what kind of person you are right

now.”

A student, B student, F student, whatever…I do not care about those details.

I respect you…you respect me…end of story!

QUICK NOTE…worst thing about teaching seniors…

It is not cool…• to talk about what you do on the weekends. • if Mr. Schultz knows everything about your life and

other students’ lives.

You cannot say whatever you want in this classroom. If you don’t care if Mr. Schultz knows things about you great but Mr. Schultz does.

Don’t Lie to Me! Don’t Lie to your parents! Here is why…

A few years ago, a student told his father that I did not help him and I did not care about his grade…I told his dad about extra credit that was

assigned. I told him about the late work policy. I told him I allowed students to come in anytime and redo parts of their tests and quizzes

for some extra points.

• WHAT DO YOU THINK HAPPENED NEXT?Another student said that he did not see how his grade dropped so

significantly after earning a D on an assessment. He went to say that I clearly give grades based on who I like. He also stated that numerous students felt this way. He threatened to go to the principal about this

and that he wanted it changed immediately.

• WHAT DO YOU THINK HAPPENED NEXT?

“Are you going to just talk to us everyday and make us take notes? Boring!”

• I want you to learn.• To do that you must…– Listen and take notes–Ask good questions–Participate in discussion–Participate in group activities

“How hard is this class?”If you show up most of the time and complete the assigned work in class (very little homework) you will pass with an A or a B!

*You are a senior if you need to miss class fine…but get the work from someone else.

“What do I need for this class?”

• PEN or PENCIL• NOTEBOOK or

BINDER FOR GOVERNMENT

• AN OPENMIND (It is okay to learn and get into a class that you did not think you were going to like.)

FOCUS on 3 things…1. FOOD (This does include candy.) in the classroom2. CELL PHONES (This does include instagram, twitter,

snap chat, vines…)3. HATS, SUNGLASSES, HOODS, HEADPHONES….

DRINK WATER! CHEW GUM! EAT BEFORE MY CLASS!

RESPECT MY RULES!

“See, I talk but I do my work.”

There is a little term called “Respect”–No talking when others are talking (teacher and fellow students)–Don’t stand up to sharpen your pencil or throw something away when the teacher is talking–No food or drink in class •Water is fine–Hats and sunglasses off in the buildings –Raise your hand to speak (common curiosity)

•Responsibility–Be on time–Always have paper and a pen or pencil–Sit in assigned seats (every day unless directed otherwise)

Integrity– You are the leaders

of this school– You are looked up to

whether you want to be or not–Disruptions in a

senior classroom are unacceptable and unnecessary

Extremely important High School issues….

1. Cell Phones in the classroom….– What will Mr. Schultz say about cell phones in the classroom?

2. Food in the classroom….– What will Mr. Schultz say about food in the classroom?

3. Gum in the classroom….– What will Mr. Schultz say about gum in the classroom?

4. Water in the classroom….– What will Mr. Schultz say about water in the classroom?

Absences• I know you all are busy young adults but…• We will be following the absence guidelines

established by the Gila Ridge Administration. More than 5 unexcused absences, means no credit is earned in the class. Attend tutoring and make up school for all absences greater than 5. NO TEACHER OPTION!

Grading•At Gila Ridge High School, we follow the “70/30 scale.” (70% assessment and 30% homework, daily work, etc.)

“Note to my Seniors”This class is one of your graduation

requirements. You will earn credit if you take notes, complete homework

assignments and study for quizzes. There is not an easy way out. Come each day

prepared, on time, and willing to learn. Before you know it, you will be graduating

high school ready to take on a new and exciting world!

The Routine….1. Come in quietly2. Sit in your assigned seat3. Get out your notebook or binder4. Sharpen all pencils before the bell rings5. Write down the information on the LCD or on

the board (Everything in your notes will have a Day Number and the Date or the objective.)

6. When Mr. Schultz is in front of the room everyone is quiet and ready to learn

Let’s say you miss class…• Ask a Classmate. Over 200 students currently

have government with Mr. Schultz.• Check the class website:

www.mrschultzgovernment.com• Email Mr. Schultz at: [email protected]• Have all work completed when you come back to

school.• SPELL MY LAST NAME CORRECTLY! PRACTICE IT!

“S-C-H-U-L-T-Z”

CHECK YOUR GRADES ON STUDENT VUE

• This is not new technology.• You can get the app on your phone.• I will not hold you hand about grades.• All my grades are up to date all the

time.• No Excuses.
