Mechanical Drawing, &

Computer Assisted Drafting

With Mrs. Denyer

Page 2: Welcome to

Everything Begins With A Design

• Behind every product, building, or process

– are drawings and models

– created by someone – using the techniques and principles

taught in drafting courses

Page 3: Welcome to

Learn New Skills

• Students of drafting and design technology

– learn to use technical skills

– to create drawings, plans, and computer models

– that will be used in constructing a – building or manufacturing a product

Page 4: Welcome to

Mental Gymnastics

• The ability to imagine an object in three dimensions

– is a skill that most drafting majors must learn

– it rarely comes naturally.

• This is a type of mental gymnastics

– that takes training and practice– In addition to a natural skill

Page 5: Welcome to

Buildings & Much More

• Drafting experts

– draw plans for buildings and much more

• They also create plans for – machines, airplanes, and construction

works such as dams

Page 6: Welcome to

Many Specialties

• If you want to work in drafting and design

– then there are many specialties to choose from

Page 7: Welcome to

Some Specialty Examples

• Aeronautical industry

– preparing drawings for engineers which will be used in the manufacture of aircraft, aircraft parts, and missiles

• Architectural firm,

– preparing drawings for new construction projects

Page 8: Welcome to

Some Specialty Examples

• You can even specialize further

– by working on commercial or residential properties

Page 9: Welcome to

• Drafting and design is also very important in civil engineering,

– and is used to prepare drawings

– which are used in major construction projects

– such as new highways, pipelines, or bridges

Page 10: Welcome to

• Electrical drafters will prepare wiring and layout diagrams

• While electronic drafters will draw assembly diagrams and layout drawings

– which are used in the manufacture of electronic components and devices

Page 11: Welcome to

• The Career Technical Education programs at River Valley High School can provide you with – knowledge and skills of a specific topic– necessary for career and postsecondary training– career readiness training

Page 12: Welcome to

• While these courses are interesting and fun, – they also have high academic standards – the essential knowledge and transferable skills – to match rapidly shifting workplace requirements

Page 13: Welcome to

• The types of careers linked to these courses range anywhere– from jobs right out of high school, – through careers requiring post-graduate degrees

Page 17: Welcome to

Technical Drawing & CAD Courses

• Technical Drawing/CAD courses teach the basic concepts of drafting and Computer Assisted Drafting

Page 18: Welcome to

Technical Drawing & CAD Courses

• You will initially learn to use drafting instruments such as – sliding parallels– Triangles– compasses – and others

• To produce drawings of mechanical objects. • You will also learn about line weights, lettering,

dimensioning, and other drawing techniques

Page 19: Welcome to

Technical Drawing & CAD Courses

• Specific design details and will be learned and applied.

• The Computer Assisted Design students will learn and apply computer technology techniques in class projects

• The more advanced CAD students will have opportunities to learn a variety of technical and architectural skills

Page 20: Welcome to

Are You Ready To…?

• Read and create dfrawings for blueprints

• Learn about manufacturing processes and materials

• Develop product specifications• Use CAD software

Page 21: Welcome to

COUNT ON IT!• You:

– WILL work hard in this class if you want to succeed

– Will gain valuable skills

– Will have fun!

– MUST put in the work to be successful!• An elective doesn’t mean easy – it

means opportunity!

Course Content

• Review the syllabus on your own to see what specific training this course offers

Page 24: Welcome to

Course Goals

• Understanding and application of the principles of Drafting Design

• Drawing techniques and proper tool use• Create accurately scaled and labeled drawings• Identify the main stages in the development of a

drawing• Apply industry-level drawing skills to design

problems

Page 25: Welcome to

Assessment• Assessment of your performance will include but will not be

limited to:– Classroom participation, punctuality and attendance– Completion of required assignments/portfolio– Individual and group projects– Tests and quizzes– Evaluations are based upon the California Department of

Education's • Curriculum Frameworks • and the California Career Technology Education

Standards– Portfolio: Digital Copy, Hard Copy, Presentation

Page 35: Welcome to

Textbooks• Your classroom will be provided a course

textbook• Once assigned, it is YOUR Responsibility!

And that of every person sitting at your station

• You MUST report any damaged or missing book promptly– To help avoid being charged for your

textbook

Page 36: Welcome to

Self-Assignments• It is recommended that you jot down ideas for possible

projects. • You are invited to discuss possibilities at any point. • Before doing the assignment, it is important to define

what might be learned as well as what other outcomes might be expected

Page 37: Welcome to

Self-Assignments• We all need to develop creative independence. • You are encouraged to propose individual

assignments in addition to the listed ones. • Individual student assignments should involve

as much preparation and research as the regular assignments.

• Such projects must be proposed and pre-approved by the teacher before doing them

Is This Class A Good Choice for You?

Do you want to learn?

Will you be a good class citizen?

Do grades matter to you?

Are you willing to do the work?Do you want to work toward college credit?

Page 39: Welcome to

Is This For You?

• If you love using computers but also love drawing and art,

– then a career in drafting and design allows you to combine these two skills

• This could be a good choice for you

Page 40: Welcome to

Is This For You?

• Computer aided drafting and design

– enables drafters to produce technical drawings

– that provide accurate visual guidelines of the structure

Page 41: Welcome to

Is This For You?

• These drawings will include

– specific technical details – including dimensions, materials, and

procedures

Page 42: Welcome to

Is This For You?

• They are drawn according to calculations

– made by architects, surveyors, engineers, or even scientists

Page 43: Welcome to

Is This For You?

• These drawings are used to construct just about anything you care to think of,

– from skyscrapers to microchips.

• The drawings produced during drafting and design – can be stored electronically, printed, or

even programmed directly into an automated manufacturing system

Page 44: Welcome to

Hang in there

• Murphy's Law was written for all types of creative work and technology.

• It's so simple to ruin a project through no fault, or by a moment of carelessness.

• Avoid despair. Just do it over or make the needed changes

Page 45: Welcome to

Hang in there

• There's usually no penalty to your grade for being a little late: so long as you prearrange a deadline extension (no extensions past the end of the term).

• Grieve but avoid despair; it happens to your teacher and everyone else too.

• Mistakes are great teachers when we are open to learn and improve from them

Page 46: Welcome to

ENJOY AND LEARN!
