WELL BUILDING STANDARDALIGNED SCHEMES: BREEAM & LEED

A building with a BREEAM, or LEED certificate may well meet some of the criteria for WELL, but this will depend on the scheme, certification

level and individual credits targeted. RESET certification may assist with meeting one equivalent feature of WELL.

Criteria BREEAM LEED RESET

Specification of materials to meet VOC criteria

Testing for VOCs/formaldehyde

Provision of bicycle storage/showers

Air flush

Specification of materials with declared ingredients

Achieving prescribed ventilation rates

Provision of prescribed filtration media for outdoor air

Lamp shielding & glare minimisation measures

Internal acoustic requirements

Continuous monitoring of indoor air quality

Wellness in the Office/ Deloitte

September 2017

Our 2015 Millennials survey

flagged employee wellbeing

as being the issue with the

largest gap between ‘what is

most important to you’ and

‘what do you perceive is most

important to corporate leaders’

People-centric design

To differentiate ourselves as the

employer of choice, we are

placing an ever greater focus on

our purpose and employee

experience, the importance of

which was reinforced in our 2017

Global Human Capital survey

Our vision is to ensure we deliver a campus that is sustainable, efficient and enables our people to maximise

their potential. To deliver on this, our aspiration is to:

• Attain the highest rating of environmental design, construction and operation, BREEAM

Outstanding, for 1 New Street Square; and achieve BREEAM Excellent in areas of the campus in which we

undertake a significant refurbishment

• Maximise how our working environments support the health & wellbeing, productivity and

happiness of our colleagues

There are costs to all firms from

absenteeism, presenteeism

and attrition so it makes

financial sense to invest in

‘preventative’ wellness design,

as per the 2014 WGBC

Wellbeing in Offices report.

We are a professional services

firm so our people are our

most valuable commodity. To

maintain our success, we need

to attract, develop and retain

the best talent in the market.

In the Deloitte Millennials

survey, 77% of responders also

said whether a business had a

purpose that benefited the

environment and society

influenced their decision to work

for them.

The Future of Work distilled

employee experience into 3

areas: culture, technology

and physical workplace; and

reiterated that workplace design

needs to be more HR-led to

best consider employees’ needs.

78

What does that mean?

The impact of an office upon the physical and mental wellbeing of its occupants is becoming more widely understood. The following physical and operational interventions will be considered in order to enhance our office environments, help our people maximise their potential and support our sustainability agenda.

Emulate natural light and improve illuminance

Maximise natural daylight/ minimise glare at desks

Use light/ high-reflectance colours in design

Lighting levels and colours appropriate to task

Enhance indoor air quality

Increase fresh air rates and provide cleaner air

Real-time monitoring of air quality

Use low impact/ low toxicity materials

Low-toxicity cleaning materials in operation

Enhance drinking water quality

Treat potable water to minimise contaminants

Improve access to water/ encourage rehydration

Encourage healthy eating

Herb garden/ hydroponic planting

Food labelling for allergy/ nutritional information

Vending strategy to replace high-sugar items with fruits/ healthy snacks; offer fruits and fresh milk

Promote healthy foods in all serveries

Provide opportunities for physical activity

Gym w/ fitness programmes and cycle facilities

Encourage pedestrian movement and cohesion, e.g. staircases; self-monitoring/ health app

Create spaces that enrich the mind

Emphasise biophilia (planting/ images/ materials)

Access to terrace for interaction with nature/ views

Use branding to celebrate purpose

Offer a variety of flexible work settings to suit different working styles; and improve collaboration

Support physical and mental comfort

Maintain comfortable temperatures

Track/ share data on temperature, humidity etc.

Attenuate noise in all meeting spaces
