FREQUENTL Y ASKED QUESTIONS

~ What languages are available to study at NCHS? Modem languages: Mandarin Chinese,

French, German and Spanish, Classical language: Latin

~ What language(s) should my son/daughter study? If s/he is currently enrolled in foreignlanguage at the junior high, s/he should continue in level 2 that language. If s/he is not currentlyenrolled, his/her interests may help decide what language to study: French has long beenassociated with the fine arts and its culinary exposure, German is an influential language in theEuropean Union and Germany represents economic power in the world. Latin is the basis formany languages and its influences are still evident today in Mythology, Law and Medicine,Spanish is spoken by more than 400 milion people and its practical application to this is whatmakes it popular. China is the fastest growing economic market in the world and Chinese is anemerging language for business.

~ If my son/daughter is currently in a foreign language class at the Jr. High, at what levelshould s/he start upon entering NCHS? If the student has earned at least a C and through theJr. High teacher recommendation, the student could continue with level 2.

~ What is the essential difference between World History (Ancient/Medieval) and Cultures ofthe World? Students will learn about social science, history and geography in both courses butin different proportion and with a different focus. Cultures has a geographic focus, while WorldHistory (Ancient/Medieval) focuses historically. Ancient/Medieval history is for the student whoenjoys history. Additional reading is required in this course. Please carefully read the entres forboth classes in the Course Description Book.

~ When is my son/daughter eligible to take Driver Education? Students who will be 15 onor before the first day of each semester may register for Driver Education for that semester. Please refer to the course book for specific registration dates.

~ Where can I find out more information about the band program? Auditions for the "A"band wil take place at NCHS for all students in the spring. "B" band auditions take place atthe junior highs. For complete information on the band program including an explanationregarding auditions, please visit the band website at www.nchsbands.Info .

~ My son/daughter is not currently enrolled in advanced math in junior high. Can he/sheenroll in an honors math course at the high school? A student who is not currentlyenrolled in advanced math wil take Algebra 1 or Algebra 1 with Geometr (if qualified) asa freshman (there is no honors level for Algebra 1). To enroll in a honors class duringsophomore year, students wil need to pass the COGAT test which is given in December.

~ My son/daughter is not enrolled in advanced math in junior high and did very well in8th grade math. How wil he/she be challenged in high school mathematics? Studentsthat qualify can enroll in Algebra 1 with Geometr. This course wil allow students to takeCalculus during their senior year at Napervile Central. Students who enroll in Algebra 1 andneed additional challenge should take advantage of differentiated learning opportnitiesoffered by their teacher.

~ My son/daughter will not be enrolled in Geometry as a freshman and wants toaccelerate in math so that he/she can take Calculus. Should he/she take Algebra 1 insummer school to accelerate? We highly recommend that students take a full year ofAlgebra 1 with Geometr (if qualified) or Algebra 1 as a freshman. We recommend thatstudents take a full year of Algebra 1 then take Geometr during the summer following theirfreshman year if acceleration is warranted.

Page 10: Welcome. Redhawks!...Welcome. Redhawks! Naperville Central High School Introduction to the High School Course Selection Process Hosted by: Jackie Thornton Asst. Principal for Curriculum

~ How does my son/daughter qualify for Algebra 1 with Geometry? Students wil take aqualifyng test in February. Students who score high enough and meet the criteria wil beinvited to enroll in the course by the Instrctional Coordinators for Mathematics at

Napervile Central & Napervile North.

~ Why is Algebra 1 so important? Algebra 1 is the foundation to success in all futuremathematics courses. Taking a shortened Algebra 1 course does not allow for mastering allof the concepts. Students should not short change their time in Algebra.

~ If my student is interested in taking Honors Chemistry, but did not receive a teacher

recommendation, can we enroll him/her in the course? Students in 8th grade science whoare interested in accelerating should sign up for Dynamic Earth Systems now per teacherrecommendation. These students should plan on taking DES this summer and will be movedto an accelerated science course based on successful completion of this summer course.

~ What is the difference between an Honors, Advanced and Advanced Placement (AP)course?Honors, Advanced and AP courses are all weighted courses considered to be morechallenging than courses in our college-preparatory sequence.

In Science, Advanced courses offer the opportunity for an additional college level semesterof study in the given area. For example, Advanced Chemistr is a one semester collegelevel science course designed to provide students with an extended study of Chemistrtopics. Advanced Chemistr teaches some of the same topics as AP Chemistry, but wil notprepare students to take the AP Chemistr exam.

Advanced Placement (AP) courses are college-level courses that follow the AP CollegeBoard currculum and prepare students for the culminating assessment, the AP Exam, takenin May. Successful completion of the AP exam provides students with up to 3 hours of

college credit.

~ My student has the opportunity to take Learning Readiness Physical Education

(LRPE). How is this PE class different than the regular Freshmen PE? Many of thetraditional activities experienced in a regular class wil be in the LRPE class. The realdifference is that the currculum implemented includes the latest brain research which wilsupplement the Literacy and Introduction to Algebra classes. Three years of data showgreater improvement in reading and math scores when the LRPE class precedes the Literacyclass and/or Intro to Algebra.
