Issue 4 Week 13 www.thecedarsschool.org.uk 06 December 2013 WELCOME! Dear parents, The last few weeks have been extremely busy for the boys and the pace shows no sign of letting up. At school we are trying to give boys more responsibility and they almost al- ways respond in a positive way. Boys like to feel that someone is depending on them and having areas of responsibility in the home can be useful as well. Thanks to all of you who helped at our recent open morning. Although the turnout was much less than in September, we seem to be attracting plenty of interest and a good number of high qual- ity applications. We have now started to assess and interview prospective pupils and will start to send out offers in January. WELCOME!

Dear parents,

The last few weeks have been extremely busy for

the boys and the pace shows no sign of letting up.

We have had a brief lull in the rugby season but

will be facing both Worth School and Wimbledon

College next week.

It was good to see so many parents at the digital

media workshop and the musical soirée and I hope

we will see you for the evening of carols before

the end of term.

The theme of tutorials at the moment is service to

others. Developing a spirit of joyful service takes

time but there is much that we can do at school

and at home to help. At school we are trying to

give boys more responsibility and they almost al-

ways respond in a positive way. Boys like to feel

that someone is depending on them and having

areas of responsibility in the home can be useful as

well.

Thanks to all of you who helped at our recent

open morning. Although the turnout was much

less than in September, we seem to be attracting

plenty of interest and a good number of high qual-

ity applications. We have now started to assess

and interview prospective pupils and will start to

send out offers in January.

MUSICAL SOIREE

This was a magical evening and it was

great to see so many boys enjoying their

music and having the courage to perform

in front of others. In some cases, per-

formers had only been learning their in-

struments for a short period of time

which made their willingness to perform

all the more impressive. There were

some outstanding highlights (and the odd

wrong note) but this is an event that we

would like to repeat each term. Roll on

the evening of carols!

DRAMA PRODUCTION

As you know, the drama department is putting on

a play loosely based on 'The Odyssey' by the

Greek poet Homer.

This term the pupils have become involved in an

impressive range of extra curricular activities such

as sports fixtures, the carol concert and clubs.

With this in mind we have decided to defer the

date of our production to mid February next term.

This will give the boys more time to devote to re-

hearsals and all the things required to produce a

high standard of performance. Shortly before the

end of this term details of how you will be able to

help with costumes, props, and masks will be

provided.

We would be very grateful your support with this.

PARENT WORKSHOP

We were delighted to welcome Mr Luison Lassala

on Wednesday, 20 November for an interactive

workshop on Electronic Media and Social Net-

working. Mr Lassala is an educationalist, a mem-

ber of the Internet Safety Advisory Council of Ire-

land and a partner in the international think-tank

on social media: InterMedia Social Innovation. He

has carried out extensive research in this area and

his contributions include the Watch Your Space

survey on social networking and the award-

winning study, YouTube: Usage and Abusage. We

had a good turnout and everyone agreed it was

very informative. Handouts are still available for

those parents who were unable to attend. Please

let the school office know if you would like one.

TUTORIAL THEMES

The tutorial theme for the next two weeks is

Service to Others.

TRAMLINK SAFETY

TALK On Thursday , 28 November we welcomed a

member of London Tramlink to come and speak

to the boys about tram safety. The speaker was

very engaging and the boys discussed ways to stay

safe on and around trams. Thank you Tramlink

and boys remember to always be vigilant for your-

self and others around trams!

CAKE SALE

In response to the Typhoon Haiyan Appeal, we

decided to bake cakes and hold a cake sale. This

caused quite a lot of excitement amongst the boys

at The Cedars and the number of baked offerings

was quite staggering for a school of 24 boys. This

epic cake sale went on for two days so that all the

cakes could be sold and we are very pleased to

report that an impressive £153.73 was raised for

the Typhoon Appeal. Thank you to all parents,

boys and staff who donated goodies of the baked

variety! And thank you to all those who came to

buy cakes. Well done The Cedars!

SPORT

RUGBY NEWS

The boys played really well against Dulwich and it

was one of our best team performances. They are beginning to effectively help each other on the

pitch, ensuring they support each other in

attack and also get back to form their defensive

line. Try scorers were Zak (3), Greg (1), Ossey

(1), Marvin (1) and Mieszko (1).

Our winning streak continued with this one-sided

encounter against a team from Whitgift. We ap-

proached this game with some trepidation as four

key players were absent due to other commit-

ments and/or illness but soon discovered the op-

position were no match for even our under-

strength team. There were some excellent pass-

ing moves, good individual running and tackling

and Mr Thomson’s handling drills are starting to

bear fruit. We hope to squeeze in a fixture

against a stronger Whitgift team before too long.
