To the Parents of: _____________________________________ Grade (entering 2010-2011):___________
From: Jonathan Borden, SAS Pudong High School Principal
Date: April 14, 2010
Greetings from Shanghai American High School – Pudong Campus. We would like to take this opportunity to
welcome you and your child to SAS Pudong High School for the 2010-2011 school year. We expect to grow from
our current 460 students to 550 this coming year, and we look forward to you and your child joining us in August to
be part of that growth. Prior to August there is much to be done with registration forms, schedules, and placement
tests, but with your assistance we will be ready to begin our new school year together on Monday, August 16 with
our New Student/Parent Orientation, followed by the first day of school on Tuesday, August 17. We want you to
have an exciting, but smooth transition to SAS! Please read carefully below so that we can work together to make
that happen.
There are two important events for new high school students and parents. The first is placement testing for math
and foreign language; the second will be New Student/New Parent Orientation. Please see details below.
COURSE SELECTION:
If you have not already completed your course selection sheets, please find them attached; these must be
completed and returned via fax (+86 21 6891-6883) or e-mailed as attachments to Ms. Jingdai Beebe
([email protected] ) by May 1, 2010, or as soon after as possible. You can find the Pudong High
School Course Description book on the SAS website at:
http://www.saschina.org/resource/resmgr/files/hspd_course_catalogue_201003.pdf .
PLACEMENT TESTING: Because our students come from a wide variety of educational systems, each with its own unique courses and
grading systems, in order to be sure that we place students in the correct course level we may ask to test your child
in certain subject areas listed below. This must be done before we can generate a student schedule.
In most cases new students must be tested for math placement, and for foreign language except for
beginners to that language. After evaluating each student’s records and course selection form, we have
determined that your child must be tested in the following underlined area(s):
MATH (mandatory) Chinese French Spanish ESOL
Students will be tested at the following times:
For those already living in Shanghai placement testing will be held here at SAS Pudong on Saturday, May 22.
Math testing will run from 9:00 to 10:30 am; Chinese, French, and Spanish placement from 10:30 to about
12:15 pm. Students should come to the SAS Pudong High School office upon arrival. Students may want to
bring a snack. Arrive no later than 8:45 am.
For those who will be arriving in August from outside of Shanghai, placement testing is scheduled for
Thursday, August 12. Math testing will run from 9:00 to 10:30 am; Chinese, French, and Spanish placement
from 10:30 to about 12:15 pm. Students should come to the High School office upon arrival. Students may
want to bring a snack. Arrive no later than 8:45 am.
If your child cannot make either of these times, we will try to schedule placement tests as time and space allow
after Orientation on the afternoon of August 16; however in that case we cannot guarantee that we will be able to
produce a schedule by the next day (first day of school) and thus your child would not be able to begin with other
students. Many classes may be filled by that time. Please make every possible effort to have your child attend one
of these two sessions. If you cannot arrive in Shanghai before that time, please contact Jingdai Beebe
([email protected]) as soon as possible.
It is important that you confirm a spot for testing by emailing Jingdai Beebe ([email protected] ). This can be done by emailing with 1) student name, 2) grade in 2010-2011, 3) tests to be taken 4) date of testing,
5) summer contact email and phone information.
Please be sure that all student Health and Vaccination Information has been submitted by the time of August
testing. Students may not be allowed to attend school on the first day unless all health information and inoculations
are up to date. In addition, be sure to request your current school to mail us official end of year high school
transcripts (grades earned in 9-11) as soon as the current term is complete. (Jingdai Beebe, High School Guidance

NEW STUDENT AND PARENT ORIENTATION: The second important event will be New Student and Parent Orientation for all new Pudong High School students,
to be held on the morning of Monday, August 16. Students and Parents new to SAS Pudong will be oriented to the
campus by returning students and meet with many of their teachers, as well as receive information about activities.
More detailed information will be sent to you by our Office of Admission, but save the date!
Please remember that our campus is roughly 1 hour and 15 minutes from downtown Shanghai, and 45 minutes from
many Pudong locations including Jinqiao. Please arrive a little early so that your child can get comfortable before
beginning placement tests. Be aware that morning traffic can be very heavy. Download the map to our Pudong
Campus from the SAS web site; do not depend on a driver to know the way, as our access has changed a number of
times in the past six months due to road construction.
You have a great adventure ahead at SAS-Pudong. It will not be long until we meet and you join our SAS school
community. Do not hesitate to contact us should you have any questions or concerns. We look forward to meeting
you on your testing date!
Dates to remember: May 22: Testing for students now living in Shanghai

Please remember to
1) Submit your course selection form if you have not already done so
