School is not the only place students learn! Amidst all this newness, don't
forget to communicate
with your kids!
When possible, start your kids off with a good breakfast and 8-10 hours of a good night's sleep in a completely
electronics-free room.
...the rising expectations & independence in high school?
...the expectation that you be more organized & autonomous?
...having so many different teachers?
...having to move classrooms every class?
...such a huge change in the high school timetable?
...being able to access your own confidential Grade 8 counsellor?
...going to school in such a HUGE building? 140 minute long classes?
...the amount of homework you're getting?
...being one of 254 other Grade 8's at Carson this year?
Question: "How was your day?" Answer: "Good."
Question: "What did you learn today?" Answer "Nothing."
If these answers sound familiar, try addressing/using the topics
below as conversation starters. "How do you feel about..."
And don't forget about the oldie but goody, "High, Low,
Lucky" game. Everyone at the table takes a turn to answer the questions below, adults included! Answers can be short or long and certainly
modified!
What was the high point of your day?
What was the low point of your day?
What happened today that made you feel lucky or grateful?

fix; allow kids to reflect and problem solve.
Communicating: Be aware, informed and
pro-active
Continuing to be a good role model
Asking if there is anything they can do
to improve a child's "6" day to a "7" or "8."
Reminding your child of the ultimate
educational goal...next slide, please!
Parents and guardians may also
help in the following ways:
And don't forget to communicate with
the school!
Email is usually the best way to communicate with staff if you have a concern. Once communication has been established, follow up phone calls or face-to-face meetings can always be arranged.
Lines of communication:
1. Start with the classroom teacher.
2. If your child has a designated learning disability, you may also wish to loop their case manager/LAC teacher in.
3. If needed, communicate with the counsellor.
4. If needed, contact the Grade 8 administrator.
Communication for social-emotional concerns:
1. Contact the counsellor.
Communication for disciplinary concerns:
1. Contact the grade administrator.

Carson Graham's
Parent Advisory
Council (PAC)
ALL parents and guardians are members at large of Carson's PAC and are welcome to attend the meetings. www.carsongrahampac.ca
Members can expect to provide feedback, to share possible concerns, to participate in PAC events, (including fund raising and informational evenings), to connect with other parents and guardians, and more.
This year, it is more than likely that all meetings will be held on Zoom.
The first PAC meeting will be held at 7 pm on Wednesday, Oct. 7th, 2020. Details on Carson's website.
Please report all absences by calling our dedicated attendance line (604.903-3645) to excuse your child. Students may not call themselves in as ill or excused; the call must come from a parent or guardian. To speak to an office staff member, please call 604 903-3555.
If a student falls ill during the day, they must report to the main office. Someone from the office will contact parent or guardian to inform and request permission to allow the student to leave. Once permission is granted, the student may leave the building unattended.
Missing class for sports, music, field trips or vacations? Don't forget to let the teacher(s) know well before you go!
