Welcome to our second NPS Scotland newsletter for 2019 and what a busy year we had had so far. The year is once again flying by and I can’t believe we are as good as in July, with the Highland Show now behind us.
Since our AGM, our NPS Scotland Committee has grown and we are delighted to now have Kayleigh Rose Evans, Jo Jack, Emma-Jane Murray and Richard Telford joining us as co-opted members and will value their input. We must thank Lesley McNaughton-Wells and Ian Smith for all they have done for NPS Scotland during their time on Com-mittee and are grateful to them both for their continued support.
We have also hosted training days with Erik Mackechnie-Guire and our Spring Show at SNEC. Although held over the Easter weekend, our Spring Show was extremely busy with excellent entries across all classes. With SNEC’s biosecurity policy, we had to en-sure that all ponies were vaccinated in accordance with their rules and this certainly did-n’t hamper people from attending. The weather for this event was just fantastic and it was ironic that we were inside!
Our Summer Show was held on 8th June and it was just fantastic to be holding it once again in the wonderful parkland setting of Strathallan Castle. It really felt that the Show had gone “home” and what wonderful comments we received from competitors and spectators as everyone was delighted to be back. Sincere thanks must go to Anna Roberts for allowing us to do so. The weather in the run up was somewhat wet, but the day as good as remained dry and the going was perfect.
Once again we offered two bursaries to our younger members and information on our worthy recipients can be found later in this newsletter. Congratulations to them both.
Committee business continues to grow and we are now looking to review all our policies from Child Protection to Health and Safety, from Photography to Risk Assessments. The list is quite lengthy. We have a Duty of Care to everyone who attends our events and so we must ensure that everything is in order. This is a somewhat onerous task, but one that we are taking extremely seriously.
Our points scheme which is kindly supported by Harbro is still open to new entrants, so if you wish to take part, then contact Committee Member Louise Oliphant. It is a great way to show the versatility of our native and part-bred ponies. Similarly, our ‘Scottish Pony of the Year’ for both Ridden and In Hand has points continuing to be tallied up and

The NPS Summer Championships at the Three Counties Showground are in early August and good luck to our Scottish members heading south to compete at them. We will also hopefully have two teams and several individuals competing there in the Young Judges Competition and we wish them all well and hope they have an enjoyable time. It is so good we have so many youngsters keen to take part in this competition.
Our Scottish finals, scheduled for Friday 23rd August, will be upon us before we know it and entries are starting to come in. They can only be made via our Entrymaster system this year, so it is imperative that you don’t lose your qualifying card as its unique number is your key to entering. We are once again organis-ing ‘Finalist’ clothing and further details on how to order these garments can be found later in this newslet-ter. They have been a great hit over the past two years and hopefully will be again.
Please contact Alicia or myself if you have any queries relating to either Blair or any of our NPS Scotland activities as were are only too happy to help you.
Good luck for the rest of the season.

NPS SCOTLAND BURSARY AWARD WINNERS
My name is Keiva Robertson and I am 12 years old. I live in Shetland and have been riding ponies since I was 2 years old. My pony is a welsh section A called Broughton Tiffany, I got her as a lead rein pony and I have produced her myself. She is a very good pony, she has given me lots of fun since I got her. We really enjoy jumping. Living in Shetland has its downsides as I only have my mum to teach me and a 12 hour ferry journey to the mainland.
I have had a few very successful years home here in Shetland with numerous Ridden, Working Hunter and Supreme Championships. I have competed at NPS Scotland events and was lucky enough to come 2nd in the Lead rein finals at Blair Castle in 2016 and also become reserve champion. I have also been placed in the first ridden at the Royal Highland Show as well as the Blair Castle Finals in 2017 & 2018.
This year so far, I have been away to the NPS Spring show where I was 2nd in my novice working hunter & 3rd in the Intermediate working hunter, then on the Sunday I won the Junior small breeds. We have quali-fied for the NPS Scotland finals at Blair this year in many classes as Inhand, Frist Ridden, Open Ridden & working hunter pony.
I am so grateful for receiving this award, it means so much, thank you!
I’m Nicola Lyon, I’m 20 years old and come from Aberdeen. I have owned horses for 8 years and currently own Baxter, a 21 year old Irish Cross and Ardfry Rohan, a 9 year old Connemara.
I have only owned Rohan for just over 6 months and in that time we have qualified for the NPS Novice Rid-den M&M Finals at Blair International Horse Trials, which was achieved during our first affiliated show-ing show and have scored 74% in an affiliated BD Prelim Dressage test.
The plan for the future with Rohan is to do Working Hunter, but at the moment my jumping skills are very rusty as I haven’t jumped for a few years and Rohan hasn’t done much jumping so this bursary will allow me to travel further afield to train with instructors that focus mainly on showing and working hunter as instructors are limited in Aberdeen that concentrate on these areas.
Rohan is the first Native I have owned and I will definitely be buying another one in the future. I have nev-er achieved so much on a horse in such a short period of time. I believe Rohan has the potential to be a star in the future so hopefully as our partnership grows and with the training we need I will be able to prove this.

NATIVE PONY DRESSAGE
At the beginning of April I travelled to Hartpury to compete in the Petplan Area Festival Finals with my love-ly homebred Highland mare, Trailtrow Texa Beag. Texa needs no introduction in the NPS world! I had a huge amount of fun competing her in both flat and working hunter classes over the years. However, there came a point when she’d done everything I wanted her to do (and more!!!) in these disciplines so I needed to find another string to her bow. In 2017 we started dabbling in dressage and I decided to affiliate soon after when I realised not only did she enjoy it but she was really good at it! During her dressage career I was thrilled when Texa won the Prelim Bronze final at the Scottish Dressage Champs last year and then went on to qualify for Hartpury the following month which was just amazing.
Our preparations for Hartpury were basic, if it’s not broke, don’t fix it! We mainly hacked and spent weeks whizzing in the woods and jumping logs to keep her fresh. I think we maybe schooled twice before we went down. Not something I’d recommend, but Texa and I have been a partnership for so long now that we know each other inside out and I knew (well hoped) we wouldn’t let each other down on the day.
Ridng round in the warm up with huge Warmbloods and professional riders was quite surreal. We rode passed lots of famous faces and I had to pinch myself to remind myself I was actually there with them too! I finished my test and I was over the moon with how she had gone. I knew there was every chance that her marks wouldn’t reflect how she felt but I couldn’t have asked for more. Texa is just one of these ponies that always tries her best and does it with a smile on her face.
When the results were finalised and we discovered Texa had finished 3rd I was speechless! We were invited to receive our rosette in a mounted prize giving where we rode into the NAF 5 Star Arena to stand in front of the grandstand, it was quite emotional. Obviously, Texa was pretty sure everyone was there to cheer for her only, her face was just a picture and the whole experience is something I will treasure. I have been so blessed that Texa has always turned her hoof to anything I’ve asked and she really is a pony in a million!
