Spending accounts are simple to use. When you join, you choose to contribute a set amount to your account through payroll deduction on a pre-tax basis. When you have an expense that qualifies for reimbursement, you attach your receipt or the insurance company explanation of benefits (EOB) to a claim form and you will receive a tax-free reimbursement.
With these accounts, you are reimbursed with the pre-tax dollars you set aside to pay for eligible expenses.
Carry over of BalanceIf you have funds leftover on Dec. 31 you may continue to be reimbursed using your 2012 contributions through March 15 (unless you terminate the plan prior to Dec. 31)
Any fund not reimbursed by April 30th are lost.
