As a NUSA Post 16 student, you will experience an environment in which allstudents enjoy the right balance of independence, challenge and supportiveguidance. We believe in developing the whole individual by providingopportunities to pursue ambitions, interests and passions whilst making a positive contribution to the school community. Our curriculum has been carefully planned to ensure that every Post 16 student has access to a flexible and personalised package of courses designed to meet their individual needs and aspirations.

Our Post 16 centre is purpose-built for our students, and provides classrooms, study areas and catering facilities for the use of Post 16 students only. Students also have access to the latest ICT equipment to carry out work and research.

Extracurricular activitiesAt NUSA Post 16 we encourage all students to get involved in extracurricular activities, such as the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme, British Sign Language courses, and a student mentoring scheme working with younger students. Students are provided many opportunities to participate in community activities, which are highly regarded by employers and universities. A suite of enrichment activities are organised to help students develop their confidence and prepare for the world of work or higher education. This includes support with finding employment through interview skills development, CV-writing and personalstatement workshops.

Pastoral Support / MentoringNUSA Post 16 provides support and advice to help students thrive asindependent learners and young adults. Students are allocated a Personal Tutor who they meet with regularly to discuss academic and personal goals, including the transition into Higher Education, employment and training. Additional support is provided to help students overcome any barriers to learning, including a 16-19 Bursary Fund scheme to help young people facing financial hardship to stay on in full time education after Year 11.

EligibilityA student must be 16-19 on the 31st August in the academic year in which he/she starts a programme of study. Students must be on a full-time programme of study.

The human genome has been sequenced and we know the complete arrangement of the three thousand millionbases that make up human DNA. In Kenya, 350 people die every day from AIDS, and in South East Asia the skies are dark with smoke as the last Borneanrainforests are burned to grow oil palms. Biologists are concerned with all these issues. They work in the fields of cell biology, medicine, food production and ecology, and the work they do is vital to us all.

Biology is a great choice of subject for people who want a career in health and clinical professions, such as medicine, dentistry, veterinary science, physiotherapy, pharmacy, optometry, nursing, zoology, marine biology or forensic science.

ChemistryCourse OverviewChemists have greatly improved the quality of life for the majority of people. Our A-Level course is underpinned by the practical skills that we call ‘How Science Works’. You also find out how chemists are real innovators, designing solutions to the problems that affect modern life. Students with a wide range of interests enjoy the chemistry course. Whether you want a job in medicine or industry, chemistry is the solid platform upon which careers are built.

Chemistry is a great choice of subject for people who want a career in health and clinical professions, such as medicine, nursing, biochemistry, dentistry or forensic science. It will also equip you for a career in industry, for example in the petrochemical or pharmaceuticalindustries.

PsychologyCourse OverviewPsychology is interested in explaining human behaviour. Why do we think, feel and behave the way we do? In order to explain human behaviour we have to provide explanations which are supported with evidence. As psychologists, we need to arrive at explanations through carrying out studies, collecting data and conducting research. By the end of the course, students will have developed a sound understanding of issues, debates and perspectives in psychology. They will also have the necessary grounding to prepare them for successful progression to higher education, and an awareness of how to apply psychology to their everyday life and the world around them.

SociologyCourse OverviewThis two year course is concerned with social behaviour and attempts to answer questions about why people behave in the way they do. For example, why do girls outperform boys in the education system? Is the nature of childhood under threat? Do poor people commit more crime? Is football more important than God?Sociology makes you think! You will have the opportunity for frequent discussion, drawing on your own opinions and enabling you to relate them to relevant sociological ideas. A wide range of teaching methods is usedincluding individual, small group and whole group tasks.

Course content includes: families and households,education, sociological methods, mass media, and crime and deviance. Sociology allows you to choose from a very wide range of careers and universitycourses including: media, advertising, law, teaching, social and youth work, public relations, and journalism.

SpanishCourse OverviewYou will read and listen to authentic materials, ranging from magazines and news clips to films, and you will study aspects of the Spanish contemporary society, its cultural background and heritage. You will extend and develop your knowledge of grammar and vocabulary, and apply this in speaking, reading, writing and listen-ing activities. You will also have opportunities to develop your understanding and awareness of moral, ethical, environmental, health, and other European and world-wide current issues.

This course will help widen your prospects foremployment and working abroad, teach you skills for life, and enable you to access University language courses which are recommended when studying a range of careers: engineering, European business, product design, management, public relations, and more.

Art & DesignCourse OverviewThe one year Art and Design BTEC Subsidiary Diploma is for students who wish to study a broad-based course leading to a specialism in Art andDesign. It is a practical course supported by research into historical and contemporary art and design movements. This course covers design methods in Art and Design, freelance work in Art and Design, and collaborative working in Art and Design. Students will develop their professional skills in preparation for a career in the industry.

This course is equivalent to one A-Level at grades A* - C, and can lead to a BTEC National Level 3 Diploma in Art and Design, employment and apprenticeships.

Children’s Care,Learning andDevelopmentCourse OverviewThis one year course is a mixture of portfolio work and work experience placements. During your work experience, you will be placed at a variety of different settings including, a nursery, a school and a specialist school for disabled children. These experiences will help you to gain a valuable insight into how children are cared for between the ages of 0 - 8 years. You will also have the opportunity to complete a Level 2 course in British Sign Language. At the end of the course you will complete an accredited First Aid Qualification. This course is equivalent to one A-Level at A* - C, and can lead to a BTEC National Diploma and apprenticeships. It can lead to careers such as teaching assistant,registered childminder, nanny and children’s holiday representative.

1 Year BTEC Level 3 National Award

Business StudiesCourse OverviewThis two year course is a vocational broad-based qualification that provides knowledge and understanding of the Business sector. You will examine how different parts of the business world works, and will examine the different factors that influence business decisions and activities. During the course, you will have the opportunity to complete a work experience placement in the business sector.

Content includes: the business environment, business resources, introduction to marketing, business communication. Optional units include: internet marketing in business and creative product production. This course can lead to careers in business administration, account management, business marketing, other business-related areas.

Health & Social CareCourse OverviewThis two year course is a mixture of portfolio work, practical case studies and work experience placements. During your work experience you will be placed in avariety of different settings in order to gain a practical insight into the health and social care sector. Placements have previously included a Doctors surgery and a phlebotomist, infant and primary schools for those considering completing a degree in early years education, and placements working alongside scanographers and physiotherapists. You will also have the opportunity to complete a Level 2 course in British Sign Language.

This course is equivalent to three A-Levels at A* - C, and can lead to Degree-level studies in areas such as nursing, social work, social sciences, psychology and early years education. It can lead to careers such as nursing, social work, youth work and physiotherapy.

2 Year BTEC Level 3 National Extended Diploma

Entry requirements5 GCSEs A* - C (including Maths and English)or BTEC Level 2 First Certificate in Health & Social Care A* - C and 4 other GCSEs A* - C (including Maths and English)

SportCourse OverviewThis course applies to students who are motivated to gain employment in the sports industry. The course covers a wide range of areas within the industry through practical and written work. Within the course you are able to gain experience in a range of local facilities from schools to leisure centres. Students will be given oppor-tunities to volunteer and gain experience within event organisation, coaching different ages and planning fitness programmes.

Example units include: Principles of anatomy and physiology in sport, the physiology of fitness, assessing risk in sport, fitness testing for sport and exercise, outdoor and adventurous activities, sports coaching, and work experience in sport.

2 Year BTEC Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma

Entry requirementsGCSE A* - D in English and BTEC Level 2 at Merit or Distinction. GCSE PE A* - D desirable but not essential
