Year 6 home learning during school closures
Welcome back to the summer term everyone!
Hi Everyone, I trust you are all well and keeping safe at home. I have missed
teaching you all and I am really looking forward to the day we can all get back
together as a class. In the meantime, it is really important we keep learning and
completing tasks at home because our brains need to keep on growing and
developing just like our bodies.
Make sure you log in every week, to see what tasks you should be completing
from home.
Don’t forget to send us pictures either via our school Twitter @Northcotesch
or directly to my school email address: [email protected].
I can't even begin to explain how much I have missed your fantastic work so
would love to see as many examples as possible!
We will be displaying the best examples of your work with next week’s learning,
so remember to still use your nice neat writing and think about creative ways of
showing your work! We are excited to see what you produce!
Previous week's work:
Summer term Week 1 - Year 6
Summer 1 week 2 Year 6
Summer term Week 3: Week commencing 4th May 2020
Well done Year 6 for all of the work sent in this week! There are lots more
children engaging with the online work! Keep it up!
This week we have started to think about our leavers' service, but we need
your help! Make sure you read all of the tasks, to see what you need to do!
Reading:
Everyone in the juniors should now have a login for Reading Plus. Please see the
guide some of our Year 6 children have made if you are struggling to log on.
Reading-Plus-Guide-for-Northcote-Parents
Task 1: Reading speed and questioning: Make sure you keep reading daily on
your Reading Plus.
As the weather is still nice, make sure you are using some time to sit and read in
sunshine. Although we cannot go out to different places, reading is able to
transport us to wherever our imagination takes us.
Task 2: Reading for pleasure: This week, can you write a review for your
favourite book? Which is the best part? Which character do you like the best
and why? Which bit made you want to read on? Cliffhangers are always the best
part!
Here are some examples of the reading task from last week:
Writing
It was great to hear from some of you, telling me what you have been up to over
the last few weeks and how you are feeling about starting high school in
September. Keep them emails and tweets coming. So far, we've seen baking,
craft, reading and dancing!
Task 1: MEMORIES FOR THE LEAVERS' SERVICE
This year, our leavers' service is going to be different than normal. I don't
think we will all meet together like we do normally, because of social distancing.
For this reason, we would like you to send us your favourite memory from your
time at Northcote. It may be something a teacher has done, a child has done, an
event like the water party, Victorian day, Colomendy...
Task 2: Creative writing: Pobble 365 upload a new picture every day. Go on the
link for one day this week and write a story about the image you can see. Make
sure you tweet or email it to us so we can see what you’ve been doing – it also
gives me a chance to enjoy some exciting new stories!
https://www.pobble365.com/
*Don’t forget all of the sentence types we have learnt, to help engage your
reader:
2A, 3 –ed, the more, the more, -ing openers, emotion openers, you could even use
dialogue between characters in your story!
If you have forgotten these, click on this school's link, which has posters for
each sentence type:

Here are some examples of writing from last week's task:
Maths: multiplication
Normally each half term starts with revising our four operations.
This week, our focus is: multiplication.
You should use short and long multiplication to answer the following questions.
Below, I have provided three useful links to help you remember how to use the
methods. Once you remember them, apply your knowledge to the multiplication
tasks below. I know you can do it!
If you need a reminder of how to do short multiplication, watch this video:

Here are some examples of fantastic maths work last week. Well done to Dylan,
Callum and Ellis.
Science: The human body
This week our focus is: the impact of diet and exercise on the human body
It’s obvious, if you don’t look after a car and don’t put in the right petrol, it’s
not going to work properly.
What many people do not realise is that our body is the same and what it
becomes depends on how we choose to treat it.
Task: Find 3 examples of each of these food groups:
-Carbohydrates
-Fruits and Vegetables
-Dairy products
What else do we need to have a balanced diet?
What foods should we not have too much of and why?
Here are some examples of the science task from last week:
Humanities - Geography: America
Carrying on with our focus of America, we are still finding lots of information
about the country.
Task: Look up these features of America on Google images. Decide whether they
are physical features or human features. Are they in North or South America?
Which State?
Human features = things that are man made e.g. buildings, bridges etc...
Physical features = things that are naturally there e.g. mountains, canyons etc..
-The Statue of Liberty
-Rocky Mountains
-Everglades
-Empire state building
-Mount Rushmore
-Route 66
-Mount St. Helens
-Golden Gate Bridge
Here are some examples of last week's Geography task:
Art: Drawing
We have now finished our drawing unit, but we have added in one more lesson!
We would like you design a cover for our leavers' service booklet for this year.
You could use the logo, draw a group of friends, do the school name in bubble
writing, draw some trophies...You could even be creative and do a design on Pic
Collage!
If you have any photos from your time at Northcote, don't forget to email them
to us, so we can add them to the DVD!
Here are some examples of last week's task. Well done to Mikolaj, Callum and
Jayden!
PE
Communicating, Collaborating and
Competing.
Our focus is communicating, collaborating and competing/comparing
performances against previous ones and demonstrate improvement to achieve
your personal best.
Task 1: Plan a workout/circuit for your family to complete. This could be in the
style of Joe Wicks' workouts.
Think about:
- The exercises you want to include (Try to work the whole body: arms, legs and
core. You will also want to get the pulse racing.)
- The amount of time spent on each exercise
- The amount and frequency of breaks
- The length of the whole workout
Task 2: In one minute, do as many 'side to sides’/‘shuffles’ as you can. In
addition to this, teach a member of your family to master this skill.
Evaluate your performance and your family member’s performance, suggesting
ways to improve performance.
Record how many you and your family member get each day and see if you can
improve daily.
Watch the link below if you need help with these:

Computing
This week's focus is: Coding
Task 4: Use your coding skills to complete the 12 steps of Lesson 1.
https://studio.code.org/s/coursef-2019
Here is a photograph of Liam working hard on his coding last week:
Spanish
This week's focus is: writing about your family members
Task: Write a paragraph (in Spanish) telling me how many people are in your
family and what their names are. Look at Lisa Simpson's example as a WAGOLL.
Spanish WAGOLL
Remember: We use ‘me llamo’ when we are saying our own name.
We use ‘se llama’ when we are saying someone else’s name.
Here is an example of the Spanish task from last week:
PSHE
This week's focus: How can one person make a big difference?
99-year-old British war veteran, Captain Tom Moore has completed 100 laps of
his 25m back garden in Marston Moretaine, Bedfordshire! He has raised over
£28 million for Britain's National Health Service (NHS) and has received
donations to his fundraising challenge from all around the world! Captain Tom
began raising funds to thank NHS staff who helped him with treatment for
cancer and a broken hip, he originally aimed to raise just £1000 but quickly
passed his target!
Task: Do one thing to make a difference in your house this week. It could be to
hoover, make your bed, put your things away, tidy your room. Although it may
only seem small, it will make a huge difference to whoever you live with!
Here are some examples of the PSHE task from last week. Well done to Mikolaj,
Ellis, Evie and Makenzie!
Religious Education
We have a chance to enter a competition that you can complete at home. To
help us with our ideas, we are going to look at some examples from last year.
Task: Have a look at the examples provided and read what the children said
about their artwork. Then have a go at sketching some of the examples and say
what you like about each piece.
