Issue Date: Week 1 8 September 2017 Welcome back to School Dear Parents, Carers and Students A very warm welcome back for the start of a new school year, I hope that you have had a relaxing and productive summer break. I know many staff and parents were in school over the break as students received their hard earned exam results in August. I am delighted to say that both GCSE/BTEC and A Level results once again showed an improvement across the school. Details will soon appear on the school web-site but the summary highlights include a 3% rise in the percentage of students achieving 5 or more A*- C grades (including English and maths), a great demonstration of the school’s continued progress in a year which saw the National percentage fall; A Level results were also improved with a 100% pass rate and 44% of all results being A*, A or B. We are delighted that one student gained the 'holy grail' of 4 A* grades at A Level and that most others will also be able to start the courses of their choice after all of their hard work. We have welcomed a number of new staff this term so students will meet a few new faces in their lessons over the next few days. We also bade farewell to a number of staff in July, including some long standing colleagues. Special mention goes to Mr Lury, Miss Joshi. Mrs Smith and Mr Hildreth, all of whom worked in the school for over 10 years (and over 20 years in the first two cases). They will be missed. It was fantastic to welcome our new Year 7 cohort into school for their first ‘proper’ day on Monday. They look extremely smart, particularly the girls in their new skirts, and their behaviour was excellent. They certainly made an excellent first impression on staff and we are all looking forward to the next seven years working with them. A warm welcome back to all of our students, it is great to see you all back after the break. Many thanks for your continued support and here’s to a great year ahead. Simon Liley, Headteacher

Welcome back to SchoolDear Parents, Carers and Students A very warm welcome back for the start of a new school year, I hope that you have had a relaxing and productive summer break. I know many staff and parents were in school over the break as students received their hard earned exam results in August. I am delighted to say that both GCSE/BTEC and A Level results once again showed an improvement across the school. Details will soon appear on the school web-site but the summary highlights include a 3% rise in the percentage of students achieving 5 or more A*- C grades (including English and maths), a great

demonstration of the school’s continued progress in a year which saw the National percentage fall; A Level results were also improved with a 100% pass rate and 44% of all results being A*, A or B. We are delighted that one student gained the 'holy grail' of 4 A* grades at A Level and that most others will also be able to start the courses of their choice after all of their hard work.We have welcomed a number of new staff this term so students will meet a few new faces in their lessons over the next few days. We also bade farewell to a number of staff in July, including some long standing colleagues. Special mention goes to Mr Lury, Miss Joshi. Mrs Smith and Mr

Hildreth, all of whom worked in the school for over 10 years (and over 20 years in the first two cases). They will be missed. It was fantastic to welcome our new Year 7 cohort into school for their first ‘proper’ day on Monday. They look extremely smart, particularly the girls in their new skirts, and their behaviour was excellent. They certainly made an excellent first impression on staff and we are all looking forward to the next seven years working with them.A warm welcome back to all of our students, it is great to see you all back after the break. Many thanks for your continued support and here’s to a great year ahead.

GCSE EXAM SUCCESSGCSE results have improved for the fourth year running at The Angmering School. In 2017 58% of students gained at least 5 Good grades including both English and Maths. We are ex-tremely proud of the achieve-ments of our students and staff, particularly as they were tack-ling the new, more challenging, GCSE courses for the first time.Students who achieved some of the very top grades included Max Holloway (10A* and 1A), Isaac Woods (8 A* and 3 A), Lola Watkins (8A* and 2A), Jacob Da-vidge (7A* and 4A), Emily Keogh (5A*, 4A and 1B), Dilaxiha Rajen-dran (2A*, 7A and 1B) and Lau-ren Wayman (2A*, 8A and 1B). Students who made exceptional progress between Year 6 and Year 11 included Alexis Luscombe (3A*, 3A and 2B), Luke Hess (2B and 5C), Ben Stevens (5C and 4D), Megan Savage (3A, 5B and 1C), Ben Silverson (2A, 3B and 5C) and Kieron Fallon (2A, 2B and 5C).Of course, our congratulations go to all of our students who have

worked so hard and achieved so much over the past 5 years.Mr Liley said “We are all really proud of the achievement of our students, they have once again shown that dedication and hard work will reap rewards. Whilst we are careful not to draw di-rect comparisons between the ‘old’ and ‘new’ GCSE systems it is very pleasing that the per-centage of students gaining 5

or more good grades including both English and Maths has in-creased for the fourth year run-ning at Angmering. I would like to personally thank staff and students for their excellent work and wish all students the best for their future studies and careers.”

A LEVEL EXAM SUCCESSStudents at Angmering Sixth Form are celebrating an excellent set of A level results this year with a 100% pass rate. The proportion of entries that have gained A* to B was 41% and A* to C was 73% - both college records.

Students celebrating include Natalie Cleverly who gained 4 A* grades and will go on to study Geography at the University of Exeter, Soham Shah who gained 2A* and 2 A grades and Ben Simpson who gained 1A* and 3 A grades. Soham will study Economics at the University of Bath and Ben will study History at the University of York. Other students celebrating outstanding results include Cameron Misson (A*ABB), Hannah Stanaway (AAB) and Georgia Spight (ABBC).

Particular mention to students taking the vocational ‘Creative Media’ qualification with Holly Parisi, Hannah Whittington and Dom Sidonio all gaining a Distinction* (the top grade).

Btec science students also excelled with Sadia Uddin, Chloe Wadey and Sarah Smith also gaining a Distinction*.

We are particularly proud of our maths department where 50% of our A2 entries gained A*/A grades. As Maths is not yet a reformed A level, Year 12 students celebrating include Iona Collis, Ben Galbally, Dylan Marodeen, Rebecca Merridue, Jack Pankhurst and Tom

Penny all gaining a grade A in their AS exams. Mr Kerrison commented “We are delighted for our students who have worked so hard to achieve these results. This is the first year of reformed A levels and I want to congratulate our staff for their professionalism in rising to the challenge and our students for excelling in unknown circumstances.”

Peggy’s WalkThe Peggy’s walk mural was an art project in which I, along with some other arty students, created a large mural for Angmering village. We made the mural by painting it using layers of paint to develop the tone, texture and form. I enjoyed working on this project as it was nice to work on a piece of art that will be enjoyed by the public for a long period of time. Also, I learnt to develop lots of different brush strokes and painting techniques and I liked creating texture in the mural, particularly in the sky and clouds.

Well done to Louis Saunders on his recent success in being identified as a talented Boccia player and being invited onto the Boccia UK Transition programme.Louis will be taking part in the World Open in Kansas which will be an opportunity to learn from and be part of a world class team with the UK BC4.A fantastic achievement, well done!

PGL South of France 2017A fantastic week of Watersports activities... the weather was hot and windless giving us new and exciting activities to try which included rock jumps and body boarding. The descent of the Ardeche was fast and beautiful with all students completing the 3 days in high spirits.

The group were an absolute credit to their families and the school impressing all staff and our lovely coach drivers.

Finally a massive thank you to Miss White, Mr Ritchie, Mr Lumbard, Mr Greenfield and my two very well behaved children Aston and Bluebelle.

Looking forward to the next trip.....

basic administration work. If, for any reason, your child does not want to participate in the scheme please let us know.

What A Great Week Y7Year 7s have had a brilliant week. They all looked incredibly smart in their new uniform, I understand that most of them have got lost on their way to lessons several times, tried new lessons which I have been told are ‘brilliant’ and ‘fun’. They have also had their finger prints taken and completed some tests (CATs).

They are all now part of the school and ready to go with Google and Show My Home-work logins. Could I just remind you to name all PE kits and coats, so that these can be easily returned when found in various parts of the school and ensure that planners are brought into school daily.

I am sure we are going to have a very successful year.

Jayne FilleryYear 7 Team Leader

Do you want to take part in Rock Challenge this year?

The auditions are taking place next Tuesday (12th September) after school, 3.30pm-5.00pm in P40 and all students can audition. Students that are successful will need to be able to rehearse on a Wednesday afterschool. Anybody that would like to audition must sign their name on the appropriate sign-up sheet on the Dance notice board, prior to the audition.

Sign up sheets are already looking great!!!

“Superficial”Definition--Superficial - adj. at, on, or near the surface; lacking sincerity, shallow.

Discussion-- Superficial is a versatile adjective. It can be used to describe a person, a wound, a position, an idea, etc... We probably hear the word most commonly used to refer to a person who is only concerned with petty and material things. We also call these people shallow, referring to their inability to handle deep thoughts.I took an Anatomy course a few years back and the word superficial was used quite often. In anatomical terms, superficial means closer to the surface, and is often used to describe a wound. If someone has a light scratch or abrasion, we call that a superficial wound. If they have a severe cut, we call that a deep wound. Deep and superficial are opposite terms used in anatomy to help make position references, i.e., the vein is superficial to the organ, the organ is deep to the vein.We also use superficial to describe something or someone that is insincere. For instance, we all know that cheesy salesman who flashes the biggest smile every time he/she talks. They are not happy, or laughing, they are just trying to make you feel that they can be trusted by flashing a superficial smile. Their only hope is that you are equally superficial.

Etymology--from Latin superficialis, meaning of the surface, from superficies, meaning surface.

Foreign TranslationsDutch: oppervlakkigFrench: superficiel(le)German: oberflächlichItalian: superficialeSpanish: superficial

Cedar Garage in Tarring is running a fundraising scheme offering 10% rebate to the school on any labour charges for servicing or repairs they carry out. All we need to do

to get the money is state that we are a friend of Angmering School when taking the car into the garage. When paying the bill, they will give back a ‘cheque’ payable to The

Angmering School, which will need to be passed onto the school.

This scheme is open to all - parents, staff and friends

10% Donation to the School with this Scheme

We hope you’ve enjoyed reading this weekly newsletter aimed at parents, staff, students and friends of the school. You would be very welcome to send in articles and photos you
