Adoption of the Ontario Curriculum for ELL
XIS has adopted the Ontario Curriculum to use as our guiding curriculum document.
The ELL Department has made some important changes to how we track your child’s growth in their language development.
Assessing Your ChildLanguage learning is developmental, the educational strengths and needs of ELLs can be identified most effectively through the use of a variety of assessment tools.

Summer Learning LossWe all look forward to summer, but
this break from learning may result in the loss of critical academic skills – which could have a lasting impact on your child’s educational development. This regression is known as “summer learning loss.”
How Can You Help? Keeping learning fun during the summer months?
Read, read, read! Learn new things and have fun reading and learning. Keeping your child reading over the summer is one of the best ways to continue learning. Research shows that summer reading can make a significant difference in a student's overall academic achievement, particularly when she begins a new school year in the fall.
www.tumblebooks.com will be available for all to use!
WritingWrite away! Keep writing materials
handy such as pencils, paper, and crayons so that your child can practice writing. Encourage her to write letters or post cards to friends and relatives over the summer, to keep a journal, make a summer scrapbook, or to write stories and poems. Ask your child to help you when making shopping lists or copying a recipe.
Math
Don’t forget about math – schedule a time each week for your child to practice essential math skills with the multitude of math games online. You can also visit www.mathletics.com to have your child practice math skills.
Things to RememberRemember:
A child may not move through all stages in one academic year.
For more detailed information about your child’s progress, please meet with your child’s ELL teacher.
A letter will be sent home containing this information with report cards.
Have your child read, write and speak in English over the summer!
