In October businesses and individuals in Laramie and throughout Wy-oming helped me raise money for my year as Miss Rodeo Wyo-

ming during my coronation and auction. The night was made possible through many sponsors donations. I cannot

thank everyone enough for making that night so special.

I want to thank my coronation crew who helped me plan, set up, and tear down for the evening. Thank

you to the local FFA chapter for donat-ing their time to set up chairs, and serv-

ing the food. A gigantic thank you to Guy and Marci Warpness and WyoTech for the

pulled pork dinner. Altitude’s and numerous local restaurants and individuals donated side dishes and desserts. The night was given a personal touch with the stick horse grand entry. Thank you to all of the kids who participated and helped make the even-ing memorable. And of course I need to thank MJ, Wade, and Bryce for assisting me in my "magic" entrance. It was something that is still talked about. We had a successful evening with the generosity of those who joined us. Thank you to all of the buyers of the evening and to everyone who shared in the festivities. Your support and en-couragement is what keeps me going strong. Of course none of this would have been possible without the love and support of my family. They have stood beside me through everything and I cannot thank them enough! The all put in a lot of time making the evening flawless. It was so nice to share this event with them.

As I end my thank you’s, I have two small favors to ask of everyone. First, please continue the support throughout your community. Help someone reach their dreams just as you have with me. I was once told, "If you see a small turtle on the top of a fence post, you can

be guaranteed he didn't get there alone." So I urge you to find your turtle and help them reach their fence post top. The second thing I ask of you is, if you were in attendance of my coronation, and happen to

have any photos from the evening to please share them with me. In all of the hustle, we forgot a camera and I have a very limited number of photos of the evening. Thank you again for all of the support at my corona-

tion. With your support, I will be the best Miss Rodeo Wy-oming I can possibly be! ~Brittany

On the road with Miss Rodeo Wyoming

Let’s go, let’s show, let’s RO-DEO! I was honored to start my year as Miss Rodeo Wyoming 2011 in a familiar arena. I was invited to present the Wyo-ming state flag during the Laramie Jubi-lee Days Fall Brawl New Year’s Eve rough stock rodeo on New Year’s Eve. It was special for me because Laramie Ju-bilee Days gave me my start on this road to wearing the jade and gold crown. It was very special to stand in the arena and look at the spectators before me, knowing they all supported me over the years. While the night was extremely cold, -2° F, is was fun giving back to the Laramie community. The first weekend of January my parents, Erin and I set our compass north to Casper to attend the first 2011 Miss Rodeo Wyoming Association meeting. It was a highly attended meeting and the association members showed how excited they are for the things to come this year. I want to thank all of the outgoing officers and congratulate the incoming officers.

The next morning I loaded up my pickup and headed south to the Na-tional Western Stock Show in Denver, Colorado. I was on hand to carry spon-sor flags for the 3rd rodeo perfor-mance. It was special to be there that night because it was the official corona-tion for Kellsie Purdy, Miss Rodeo Colo-rado 2011. That week I attended the Citizen of the West Dinner honoring Pete Coors. Pete was recognized for his contributions and devotion to agricul-ture. The night also featured the nu-merous National Western Stock Show scholarship recipients. We were all for-tunate to receive a special edition root beer bottled by Pete Coors. That week-end, Miss Rodeo America 2011, McKen-zie Haley, Miss Rodeo North Dakota 2011, Sam Stanke, Miss Rodeo Colorado 2011, Kellsie Purdy, and I visited the Children’s Hospital. It was an amazing visit and I wish we had more time to

talk with all the children there. I ended my first visit to Denver with Goat Rop-ing, which also benefited the scholar-ship program. It was a fun night and was great seeing the community support for the 70+ scholarships given.

The following weekend I was joined by Laurie Thoman-Hernadez, Linda and Rod Myers, and Kerri Cook at the WESA Market. Erin joined us for only a short time, but it was good to have her there! We met with many sponsors and made some great connec-tions. With the support of these people, I will travel this in year style!

I returned to Denver for the last 8 rodeo performances at the National Western Stock Show. I finally got my chance to ride the well-known horse, Fargo. I had a blast carrying the Na-tional Western Stock Show flag during each opening ceremony. On “Wyoming Day” we actually carried the Wyoming State flag which was very special to me. I also had a chance to talk with Gov. Matt Mead and his family, along with members of the Wyoming Stock Growers. Numerous other state rodeo

queens were present which gave us an oppor-tunity to start forming our friendships. Britta-ny Slaton, Miss Rodeo California 2011 and I were honored to have lunch with long-time supporters of Miss Ro-

deo America, John Cavey and Pat Thompson. Brittany and I also found out that not only do we share a first name, but we also share a birthday! I have had a few days off before I load everything back up to head to Rapid City, SD for the Black Hills Stock Show.

The first month of being Miss Rodeo Wyoming 2011 has been more than I could have ever imagined. Erin told me it would be exciting and unbe-lievable, but I had no idea it would be this awesome! I want to thank everyone for the continued support in helping me get to this point of my life. Thank you to the association for the hard work they volunteer every year to help this organi-zation grow. Thank you to my family for being my backbone and more im-portantly thank you to Erin for doing such an amazing job last year and pre-paring me to carry on the history and tradition of the title. Ok Wyoming, Let’s Saddle up and ride on!

    Meet the Members: Julie Pederson

Tell us a little about yourself!!

I am a Wyoming native, born and raised in the Black Hills. My husband, Jim, and I run the family ranch together with my parents. We live north of Newcastle at Four Corners. We also have a family real estate business, Arnold Realty, in Newcas-tle. I’ve been a real estate broker for 20 years and we specialize in ranch, hunting and recreational properties. My hobbies are photography, making beaded jewelry, collecting old jars, exploring old home-steads and reading.

I understand that Stacie Kline (MRW’06) was from Newcastle as well as Jennifer Lipp (MRW Treasurer), what are some tourist attractions that Newcastle offers?

Newcastle is on the western edge of the Black Hills, so this entire area offers unlimited outdoor recrea-tion in all seasons, many tourist at-tractions, and beautiful scenery. New-castle itself is in the corridor of the Cheyenne to Deadwood Stage Route and I live close to where the only suc-cessful gold robbery of the Stage line

occurred. Within an hour & half drive from Newcastle you can take in historic treasures like Devils Tower, Mount Rushmore and Spearfish Canyon (where they filmed the ending to Dances With Wolves). Entertainment is on both ends of the spectrum; the Black Hills Stock Show & Rodeo is going on right now and the Sturgis Motor Cycle Rally comes around every August (it’s not all as crazy as Full Throttle Saloon). It is a great place to live.

How did you get involved with MRWA?

When I was younger my mother was the local pageant coordina-tor in Newcastle, so I idolized Rhonda Stearns and Donna Hunt (both former MRWs), and hung on their coat tails whenever pos-sible. I did many queen waves out in the pasture for the cows to judge. I competed in the MRW Pageant in 1989, winning the horsemanship & personality categories & was 1st runner up. I ac-tually joined the association when Stacie Kline was MRW. I think it’s important for people in the queen’s hometown to get involved. The local sponsors were very generous to Stacie and we wanted to make sure that they got to follow along with what she was doing. So we sent Stacie’s sponsors and the Chamber of Commerce membership a little newsletter. That project evolved into doing the MRW Newsletter.

You have done a fantastic job as Newsletter and Mem-bership Chair, what was your favorite part of your job?

I am interested in graphic design, so actually laying out the newsletter was the part that I enjoyed, seeing everything come

    together into a finished product.

What is the hardest part of your job as Newsletter Chair?

Making sure I had the current mailing/emailing list of sponsors, MRA National Direc-tors and MRWA Members. The first edition of the year always seemed to be the most daunting because you have sponsors from the outgoing queen and the current queen. As a business person, who gets asked for donations all the time, my heart is in keeping sponsors happy and making sure they don’t get forgotten after the checks are cashed. So I felt a sense of re-

sponsibility to make sure the sponsors were taken care of.

What kind advice can you give me (the new Newsletter Chair)???

Make it fun and interesting. Tell us things that we don’t already know and promote the sponsors.

What would you tell someone who is interested in get-ting involved with MRWA?

Pick an area that you want to be involved with and get to work. Don’t do it for your own glory, do it for the girls, for Wyoming and for rodeo. Our western way of life is in jeopardy – Wyoming is special place and if we can keep young people involved and car-rying on our traditions we stand a chance of preserving the West. If we don’t do something, who will? I was very proud when Wyo-ming adopted the Code of the West, where else in this country could that happen? Most of the things in the code seem like se-cond nature to us, however there are people who DON’T under-stand the principals at all, which is very sad. The MRWA is one of the best state organizations, we all have a part to play in keeping it strong.

I’m sure you’ve had the chance to follow quite a few Miss Rodeo Wyoming’s as you headed the Newsletter, can you think of some great stories from their road reports that were memorable to you?

There are lots of stories, but what I find most memorable is see-ing how each girl’s individual personality comes through. As the year progresses you can see them grow, mature and become more confident. Wyoming can be very proud of it’s of rodeo queens.

Miss Rodeo Wyoming’s Queen Corner Welcome to Miss Rodeo Wyoming’s Queen Corner! This page is primarily dedicated to helping young ladies achieve their goals. We will discuss cur-rent trends within the queening world, provide an outline of study materi-al as well as resources for pageant clothing, and advice to help everyone reach their full potential. If you have topics that you would like to discuss

please email me, Erin Heffron at [email protected].

It’s a new year and we’ve all made goals for what we would like to ac-complish in 2011. Getting ready for a queen contest can be overwhelm-ing and it is definitely something that should be tackled several months in advance. Not only are you worrying about getting your horse back in shape once spring rolls around, but you also have a daunting list of study topics that need to be tackled. I suggest taking the time to map out your plan of attack. Start by listing everything from studying equine science and reading the PRCA Media Guide to scheduling mock inter-views and public speaking engagements. Once you’ve written out your list, take out your calendar and set deadlines for yourself. Be sure to share this list with someone so that you can keep yourself accountable and be able to celebrate big accomplishments with them. Here is a list of possible topics that you should be comfortable with:

Rodeo History Rodeo rules (PRCA Rule Book) 2010 World Champions 2010 Wrangler NFR Facts 2010 Stock of the Year 2010 Year End Awards PSN’s- current rodeo news PRCA Media Guide Equine science Current U.S. and World Events Circuit System All-American Pro Rodeo Series Million Dollar Tour Xtreme Bulls Animal Welfare Stats

Animal Rights vs. Animal Welfare TETWP Wrangler National Patriot Program PROCOM State Facts

    Prorodeo.com

In addition to all of these study topics, it is important to incorporate the following before you compete:

Mock interviews—with family and friends, have them tape you so you can watch yourself answer questions

Public speaking opportunities—practice giving your speech any time you can, Lion’s Club, Rotary Club, and 4-H groups are great examples.

Horsemanship coach—even the most experienced horsemen take classes and advice; remember that you can never know too much!

Live and breathe rodeo—take the time to watch a rodeo and pay attention to the behind the scenes. Watch the stock contrac-tors, know where the judges stand for each event, know where the out-gate is, and talk to everyone! Ask contestants specifics about their event, talk to secretaries about their job, get to know the stock contractors. Be courteous and make sure to leave a positive im-pression on everyone you come in contact with!

Think outside the box—this is a list of possible topics that might come up! The great thing about rodeo queen competitions is that you should be comfortable with anything that is thrown your way. Be prepared to think on the spot!

Very Classy Green and Brown Kippy Jacket This custom-made Kippy jacket was worn at the

Miss Rodeo America Pageant for the Cowboy Christ-mas Scholarship Auction. I wore it with brown

“Stardust” Q-babies. Is very catchy and would be appropriate for an interview or dress up occasion.

    Size small. Asking $850

Please contact Erin Heffron at [email protected]

Rodeo Queen Classified's Beautiful Jan Faulkner Orange Pearl Dress

This dress is great for formal occasions! Worn at the President’s Luncheon at MRA, this dress is one of a

kind! Jan Faulkner’s intricate attention to detail makes this dress stand out! Comes with matching pearl ear-

rings and size 7 boots! Asking $1500

Please contact Erin Heffron at [email protected]

If you have clothes that you are trying to sell, shoot me an e-mail! Please include a picture and description of the garment, size, price and your contact information.

Pop Quiz: Name all of the stock contractors from Wyoming, list any notable stock from their string and any interesting facts. Hint: This may come up at the clinic! Happy Studying! 7

T ravels (plural) referring to more than one action of going from one place to an-other by car, plane, train or ship. The travels of Miss Rodeo Wyoming became more than just a trip from one rodeo to another, rather, a journey of exploration. I had the distinct honor of wearing the jade crown for a year, something that I continue to mar-vel about two months after passing on the legacy. It gave me the opportunity to grow as an individual both in my personal life as well as my future professional life. I used to joke about my occupation of being “professional rodeo queen,” which goes a long way in describing my duties; professional public speaker, professional time manager, professional hair stylist (only one style…don’t forget the wings!), professional fund-raiser, and professional Dodge truck driver! Many former state rodeo queens can relate to the value of taking a year to represent their state, an experience that we will continue to relive for the rest of our lives! The last few months of my reign were filled with ex-citement! From flying to Oregon for the 100th anniversary of Pendleton Round-up, to placing the jade crown on Brittany’s hat during her coronation, to competing for the title of Miss Rodeo America, the last few months were unforgettable. Alt-hough I didn’t do as well as I had hoped in Las Vegas, I don’t want to let that define my worth as a rodeo queen. I had an incredible year; I built strong relationships and gained im-portant life skills throughout my year as Miss Rodeo Wyo-ming. God blessed me with the experience to represent you all and I hope that I made you proud!

As I begin the next chapter of my life, I am thankful for so many things! I wouldn’t have been able to have such a great year without the support of my loving family, my gra-cious sponsors and a strong state organization. Thanks to everyone who made this year possible! The future looks bright from my perspective! I am currently finishing my de-gree in Kinesiology and Health Promotion at the University of Wyoming. It is safe to say that I love all of my classes be-cause I am refreshed from a year off and I’m ready to tackle more goals. Although I am not running track anymore, I have been busy with my job as a fitness instructor at UW (I teach a group weight lifting class called “sculpting”). I hope to graduate with a bachelor’s degree in December and with God’s grace, I’ll be able to apply to Physical Therapy school the following year. As some of you have noticed, I recently took over the job of Newsletter Chair for the MRWA and I am enjoying giving back to the organization that shaped me into who I am today. I have some big shoes to fill from the previous Newsletter Chair, Julie Pederson, but she has given me strong guidance! Thank you again from the bottom of my heart for believing in me and making my year unforgettable!

    God Bless Wyoming!
