Welcome!
Dear Friends and Families of St. James,
St. James Student Council members will be present at the 10 am Mass this Sunday. Once a month a grade will attend Mass together, say the Readings and bring up the gifts. Our students are vibrant members of our Parish.
The Saint James Education Foundation will be hosting a Casino Night at the O’Gorman Center on Saturday Night September 7th. Tickets are $50 a person for appetizers, drink, casino and fun! This is a new outreach from the SJEF to fund technology and education at St James School. Last year the foundation funded new laptops for all teachers and helped to fund Spanish, PE, Music, Field Trips and Hands on Art. Contact the school office for tickets and more information.
Registration is still open! We have a few spots still
available in grades TK - 4th and 6th to give your child an
education in a Christ centered environment. Call the
school and schedule your private tour and introduction to
why Catholic School is an Advantage for Life!
God Bless you,

Pastor’s Corner Dear Friends and Families of St. James,
The last week of August Fr. Kavanagh and I responded to the call of Archbishop Jose Gomez and joined about 350 other priests ordained for the Archdiocese of Los Angeles to meet with him. Our parishes were left in the care of Religious Order priests and priests from other dioceses/countries temporarily ministering in Los Angeles. Thank you for your prayers as we met. The goal of the days was to renew our personal call to priesthood and strengthen our fraternity with each other through prayer and discussions. The last time we met as priests ordained for the Archdiocese (incardinated priests) was about 20 years ago, so it was a special time for us to renew friendships and get to know some of the younger priests (and for the younger priests to get to know some of us old priests.) Our discussions centered around the journey of our vocations, from the call to enter the seminary, to our hopes and dreams—and the realities of our lives and ministry, the trauma of the sexual abuse scandal, and our strengths, joys and hopes for ourselves and our parishes. The openness and candidness of us all drew us deeper into the conversations and energized us as we came to share the commitment to priesthood and the love of ministry that binds us together. Acknowledging our weaknesses we also tried to identify ways that each of us can continue to grow as a person and a priest. At the closing Mass on Thursday it was amazing to see that everyone was still there—something that never happens. The week had become a special moment for each of us, and that is very good for everyone in every church of the Archdiocese. We were strengthened in our faith, in mutual support of one other, and in our vocation to serve humbly in our parishes. God Bless you,
Msgr. Mike

St. James Men's Retreat to the Mountain of God—Sept. 13
th - 15
th
Men, join us for a retreat at Mater Dolorosa at Sierra Madra. This is a very special time to spend with our Lord, with quiet time to listen and speak to our Lord about where we are and where we are going.
The retreat center is attended by the Passionist priests and Deacons to guide us in our faith journey. The retreat includes seminars and discussions that allow us to help us find our purpose in life as we struggle through life’s challenges. It is like an oasis to stop along our journey and refresh our spirit.
The most frequent comment I hear up there is "If I knew it was like this, I would have come here years ago." Don't just think of it as a weekend, think of your renewed spirit. Your family, your friends and your co-workers will see a renewed you. We all win with Jesus.

Longing for Inner Peace
The Holy Rosary is an enormous source of grace and spiritual protection, one of the most powerful sacramentals of the Catholic Church. Sister Lucia dos Santos, one of the children to whom Our Lady appeared at Fatima, once said, "There is no problem, no matter how difficult it is, whether temporal or above all spiritual, in the personal life of each one of us, of our families ... that cannot be solved by the Rosary. There is no problem, I tell you, no matter how difficult it is, that we cannot resolve by the prayer of the Holy Rosary."
The South Bay Rosary Cenacle, formed by a group of Parishioners, is circulating the statue of our Blessed Mother (Our Lady of Fatima).

The 4 stages of Marriages
The 4 stages of marriage are:
1. Romance, 2. Disillusionment 3. Misery 4. Awakening
Most marriages experience the first three stages, and marriages that end in divorce never have a chance to make it to the 4th stage of Awakening.
If your marriage suffers from Misery or Disillusionment, don’t give up!

Gospel Meditation
It’s said that upon reading the Gospels, Gandhi com-mented that he very much liked Jesus Christ. It was Christ’s followers he found troublesome. One wonders who Gandhi had met and if these Christians had truly counted the cost of their faith. Following Jesus, really following Jesus, is much more challenging than we may think. He emphasizes this with strong language in this Sunday’s Gospel. He compares discipleship to the car-rying of one’s own execution device — “his own cross” — and for the need even to “hate” what could disrupt one’s commitment. Some of this is standard hyperbole, exaggeration for effect common to the time period. Some of this should make us wonder how deep our dis-cipleship goes. “Which of you wishing to construct a tower does not first sit down and calculate the cost?” Jesus imagines this construction project gone wrong. Someone may lay the foundation but not have enough resources to finish. We’ve received the firm foundation of the sacraments — our baptism, for one, along with weekly Mass attend-ance and regular confession. Yet how often do we find ourselves too distracted, exhausted, or uninterested to truly build our lives on our faith? We have all met such Christians. Some days, we may be those Christians our-selves. We become the incomplete tower that confuses and baffles the onlookers. “This one began to build but did not have the resources to finish!” For some of us, our cross may feel heavier than we ex-pected upon the first lift. Building a tower means laying stone upon stone. It’s a process. We don’t arrive at com-pletion overnight. Grace is always sufficient to provide the resources, but we need to keep saying yes to the task. This week, consider your own discipleship. What is one area where you’ve become distracted or discour-aged? How can that improve this week? Let God lay another brick on the tower. ©LPi

Tuesday Night Bible Study
The Tuesday night bible study is taking a short break for the summer and will resume October 15th, 7 pm in Kavanagh Hall for a new study:
Matthew: The King and His Kingdom.
This 24 session course will show how Jesus fulfills God's promises to Israel and establishes his kingdom on earth.
Through references to the
Old Testament promises of God to his people and the messages God sent them through the prophets, the Matthew Bible study program provides the key to understanding the rest of the New Testament and Christ as the fulfillment of God’s plan.
Come, share and participate in our Church Community.

Catholic Q & A - J. P. Alegria
Q: Consider the Saints. The Catechism in its section called The Profession of Faith, paragraph 688, "The Church, a communion living in the faith of the apostles which she transmits, is the place where we know the Holy Spirit: in the witness of the saints through whom he manifests his holiness and continues the work of salvation."
Butler's Lives of the Saints reveals that this manifesta-tion of that holiness was sometimes achieved early in life by truly pious souls, and sometimes only after the initial-ly less than pious humans overcame the earthly chal-lenges of dissolution, flaws, shortcomings, and intemperate prodigal stations occupied by rather more imperfect souls.
What are a few examples of saints, reflective of the presence of the Holy Spirit, who offer guidance that helps lead us to his salvation today?
A: It is reported that there are more than 10,000 Saints recognized by the Catholic Church. The often amazing stories of their lives are among the best of spiritual biographies:
St. Theodosius, an example of the love of God and neighbor; St. Peter, an example of the replenishment of a spirit animated by God; St. Canutus, an example of the humblest adoration before the majesty of God; St. Raymund, an example of a fight against sin; St. Paul, perhaps at the apex of the spirit of conversion that made him an example of the imitation of Christ, in all humility. We stand in awe of the pitfalls, struggles and saving, triumphant possibilities found in the examples and the witness of the Saints. Here we mentioned just five among the litany of the Saints.
Only 9,995 examples of salvation to go.
As our Choir sings: "All you holy men and women, pray for us..."
Prayer After Communion
Soul of Christ, sanctify me. Body of Christ, save me. Blood of Christ, embolden me. Water from the side of Christ, wash me. Passion of Christ, strengthen me. O good Jesus, hear me. Within your wounds hide me. Never permit me to be parted from you. From the evil enemy defend me. At the hour of my death call me and bid me come to you, that with your Saints I may praise you for age upon age. Amen.

Teach your children "total body safety"
It encompasses all parts of the body, including the head, mouth, legs and arms, which are usually overlooked. Child abuse perpetrators can use any part of the body to stimulate a child or young person, or to arouse
themselves. It is important to stress to teens the importance of "total body safety" in their relationships with others. Tell them, "Just because a person is a close friend, or even a girlfriend or boyfriend, that does not give them a right to touch you in a way that makes you feel uncomfortable."
